Ooh, JewelryGirl, I forgot one thing - to avoid having the palm of her hands (or yours, if you're helping her apply) turn orange, you may want to try one of the following: slather lotion as a "barrier" on the palms of your hands before applying, wear latex gloves while applying, or exfoliate the palms of your hands afterwards.

Thank you sooooo much ladies! We just ordered the Paula's Choice you linked to above Susan. Thank you so much for the referral. Kari, thanks for the tips on applying & timing as well. I think that will be key. Yeah, we're both happy right now - hope it works well!

Back in the day when I actually cared about being tan, I used Endless Summer's foam tanner. It was pretty easy to use.

If your daughter ends up using self-tanner, have her try experimenting at least several weeks before prom (to avoid making a huge mistake right before prom.) Make sure she exfoliates well, especially around elbows and knees, before applying, and apply VERY lightly around any joints or creases in the body.

Other things to be aware of: the self tanner can stain your clothes if you aren't careful, it only lasts for a few days so you will need to reapply often, and it can leave a strange scent on your skin. I've noticed "tanning scents" on friends who went spray-tanning as well.

After a few summers of self-tanning I decided that it was way too much effort and I was okay being pale.

Oh No...don't let her go to the tanning beds...

I use Paula's Choice self tanning lotion and it is awesome. I think the key to good results with using a product like this is to shave the day prior to using and put a thin layer of lotion on before putting the tanning lotion on, it makes it go on smoother and it is then easier to spread and make sure you don't miss any spots.

I also use the disposable hair coloring gloves that come with the at home coloring/highlighting kit. I always wash them after using it on my hair and reuse for tanning.

After removing the gloves, I just put some self tanning lotion on the tops of my hands using the "about to be discarded gloves." I use the Paula's Choice lotion about once a week and then I use a Dove body lotion (that has a smaller amount of the "tanning stuff") every day.

You can get the Paula's Choice product on http://www.cosmeticscop.com but I think there are other products mentioned previously are just as good.

I am paying dearly for all the time spent in the sun and I do my best not to go without sunscreen. These products are a great option for those who still like that healthy glow.

Another option is a bronzing powder for her face. I don't use the self tan stuff on my face. I still do my neck with the tanning lotion, just not my face and use the bronzing powder (loose powder) with my regular loose face powder so it isn't so "strong".

Here is the link to Paula's Choice "Almost The Real Thing" Self Tanning Lotion:

I had this problem when I got married...The spray tanning probably won't turn her orange, but it's not likely to help if she is pale to begin with. The tanning salon employees told me that the spray tan works best with a natural tan underneath. They were right, when I tried the spray, it looked good on places (shoulders and arms) where I had some color already, but not noticeable at all other places (white legs). Have you tried telling her that pale skin can be beautiful, and maybe showing some celebrity examples? It might work...

How about Neutrogina foam in bronzer, You can get it at ULTA and it works well for an instant glow and being a foam bronzer you can see where it is the instant you put it on....no waiting for color to build and then finding you missed a spot.

How about the body lotions with a hint of self tanner in? Builds up gradually and i guess comes out paler that full on fake tan which might look too orangy on pale skin x

Please let me know any ideas you have. DD15 almost 16 really really wants to tan for prom. She's blonde & very pale complected. I thought maybe some of the lotions or where you go have it professionally sprayed on but she said her friends are all telling her she'll end up orange. Is that true? Anything out there she could try instead of tanning beds?
