Definitely. My mom never leaves a piece of jewelry as is for very long. She's had pearls restrung on their own and with other colored pearls. She takes apart rings, earrings, bracelets, pins and has new settings made for the stones. I would find a local jeweler rather than a chain. You want the guy who knows what he's doing onsite so you can talk through the options with him.

You can absolutely alter jewelry, and pearls in particular. You could have them restrung with a new clasp. Maybe a toggle clasp? There are some posts about redesigning jewelry in the blog passage des perles. Lots of great ideas there.

Have you ever had your jewelry altered? I have a lovely set of cultured pearls that my parents gave me but I never wear them because they always get tangled up in the little hairs on the back of my neck and it hurts like heck. I've been wondering if it is possible to have them altered from a single strand of beads to a style that has a chain and clasp in the back, and maybe use the leftover beads to make some matching dangly earrings.

Is this a crazy idea? Are there any super smart ways to keep the necklace from pulling my hair out that I haven't thought of? I wear it up, of course, but it still pulls the small hairs.
