It would be hard to say much about the waistband without seeing it, but I would just graduate the amount of fabric that you let out until you get it the way you want it. Darts might help. I would try it on a couple times inside out and all pinned up before sewing so that you are certain it's exactly how you want it.

Thank you all! The shorter length it will be, another midi for petites length...

Jayne, I wanted to keep the waistband intact. it's much more work if I make that wider too and the very top part of the skirt is not too tight. I'll probably have to add some darts to make up for the wider hips and the unchanged waistband, I'm not sure. Any tips from anyone who sews?

What happens to the waistband when you let it out? Does it stay the same?

What Kari said! It's so wonderful that she included enough extra fabric to allow for modifications!

What a pretty fabric too! Lovely, and lovelier still to be able to wear happy memories of your grandmother like this. So touching. Another vote for the shorter length.

Thanks Kari. I think you're right, the shortest length looks best. It's the same length I recently shortened my green skirt to. It should be no problem to let it out, the lining is only sewn into the waistband and the zipper is sewn into the middle of the back. I just have to open the side seams and close them again.

If it works to let it out so that it's no longer pulling across the hips, I think the color is gorgeous on you and like the shortest length. That rusty red (oxblood?) is lovely.

My grandma made this skirt for me some years ago and I haven't worn it for a long time. It's a lined skirt that's great for fall and winter. It's too tight and pulling around the hips now, but I plan to let out the side seams so I can wear it again. My grandma was a very practical woman and she left enough fabric in the seams that I could probably make it up to two sizes bigger.

I also thinks it needs some shortening to avoid looking frumpy. It's not correctly pinned for the pics, but I think you can imagine what it would look like. Should I leave it as a real midi like in #4, or does it look better just under the knees like in #5?

I really want to wear it again.
