Don't torture yourself by wearing too-small clothes! This is not healthy mentally or physically!

I think you need to find the right items. Have you tried low-rise pants and then a wrap top or longer jacket? Or a tapered pencil skirt that fits the waist and then tapers in and is a bit long (like past the knee)? My sis has this type of problem and her best outfit is a pencil skirt like this and she wears a long-ish top un-tucked that floats away from her belly or skims it. She looks lovely!

I've recently bought a tube midi skirt - you might try that. it's very stretchy, but also quite tapered.

The rule that I think you should go by is that letting things out is a bit more tricky than taking it in because some items may not have enough fabric for it to be let out. I alter a lot of my clothes because I am petite with small waist but curvier hips so I have to buy pants big enough to fit my hips and then take in waist. And no, shaping pants in the seat is something I have done before many times so its not that unusual.
Believe me I do feel for you-its almost impossible for me to find pants that fit off the rack so I have pretty much accepted that alterations is a fact of life for me.

So, like a lot of women I struggle with my body shape and clothes. Looking through size charts online I can see why: my waist measurement is generally 3 sizes larger than my hip measurement. And, my waist is plus size but my hips are not.

I know that "the wisdom" is to buy to fit the largest part of you and have the rest taken in. But...there's so much more selection in normal sizes I'm often tempted to squish my belly into smaller stuff (uncomfortable).

Also, if I buy to fit my waist: how difficult is the alteration through the hip/thigh? I think the thigh/leg should be fairly straightforward, but I don't want to have saggy bum pants because I can't fill out the seat. And, it seems that seat shaping might be a difficult/expensive alteration.

Does anyone have recommendations for me? I'm on the verge of giving up and getting maternity pants. (and I'm not pregnant, and have never been)
