Modgrl, that's really good to hear! And I like the reminder that there's no reason I can't get another pair later if I find something trendier or edgier that I like. I really do wear boots and booties constantly when it's cold, so I could potentially justify two flat black pairs with different vibes.

Meant to say earlier that bj and Deb's suggestion to look at shooties is another good one. I have a feeling those might be a little more limited-wear, though, since a lot of my weekend outfits are dresses with leggings and socks rather than with tights, and something that's more shootie than bootie might be low-cut enough to look funny in that kind of outfit. Maybe that would be the direction I'd go if I ever want to replace my heeled black booties, since those are mostly worn to work, with slightly dressier outfits and hose.

And I'm planning to pack up the J. Crew ones to return tomorrow! Will play around with the Pacifics a little more and maybe post some pictures with different types of outfits if I have time.

I have the pacifics and I absolutely LOVE them. They are sleek and dressy without being fancy or blingy. I literally have not taken them off since I got them. I wear them with everything. Maybe look for a second pair of trendier booties for when you are feeling like you need an edgier look.... It would probably be good for me to have a second pair of shoes to rotate too...

Try the Pacifics on again and walk around the house in them a bunch. They do look better than the J. Crews on you but if you are not happy then another fab bootie will appear!

Hi, everyone! I don't have much time to reply now, so will be brief and will try to come back later to respond to points I missed, but thanks for all the great comments!

I think the Pacifics are growing on me. I'm definitely known to have things end up as favorites only after mulling a lot and seeing them compared to other options, so I'm hesitant to return just because of hesitation. (So, kind of meta-hesistant, I guess.)

Seeing them through other people's eyes helps a lot. And this sounds really silly, but I'd been keeping them in the box since I bought them because it wasn't cool enough to wear them until recently, and mostly just reminding myself what they looked like from the picture online. Turns out, they look better in real life.

I'll be wearing them mostly with skirts and dresses, since that's most of my wardrobe, although they should get some wear with pants too. And, bj, I think you're right about the skirt length I'm wearing here being a little longer than ideal with these. The skirt is what I happened to be wearing yesterday and is one of my longer ones. I'd also be wearing the booties more with black or other low-contrast tights or leggings than with bare legs.

Maybe I'll poke around a little more. I'd been keeping half an eye out for something better than these for a while and the J. Crews were the first pair I found that I really liked enough to try. So maybe that should tell me something? I think I possibly just needed to remind myself that sleek and minimal isn't me. I know that, but every so often I forget.

Jackie, I like your idea of trying the Pacifics on with my whole wardrobe!

(Edit: I really thought that was going to be brief!)

So great to see that I'm not the only overthinker :). I think it's true that part of the reason it is so difficult is because there are so many black boots out there, so many options to choose from, and we are trying to find the perfect one that will cover all of our bases. Personally, I do love the Chelsea boot look, however, I prefer the pacifics on you over the JCrews. The fit, as you mention, seems a bit off and I think they are making your foot look longer (to me). Perhaps a little too long and plain. You know, I really like the SEs on you. I totally get it, though, that niggly little feeling. Can we see them styled with pants? Is your plan to wear them mostly with skirts or pants or both? Sometimes I need to go through my entire closet and try them on with everything (trust me I made a mess doing this with my robyns). So I guess I'm not really help except that I prefer the SE over the JCrew, but I do still like the SE in general. Wish we had a nordstrom here so I could try a bunch of these on in person.

I prefer the Pacifica's on you (and I'm a HUGE chelsea boot fan.) I love the straps and the refined look of them on you. The lower vamp will make them easier to wear with pants -- skinnies and straight leg.

With that said, the question is why aren't these completely appealing to you.... It sounds like you should look around.

The SE booties are way nicer and refined, and the detail makes them interesting, whereas the JC ones are rather plain and uninteresting for a dress bootie. Keep looking if you are not 100% happy, there are many more out there.
I will say that with your leg shape and height, that a shootie may well be a better option for you to wear with skirts and dresses. They have more of a leg lengthening effect as they don't cover the leg and dip down in the front of the ankle. Save your booties to wear with pants.

I see the Pacifics have a bit of heel and somehow sleeker toebox, that's why they work better than the JCrew regular Chelseas.

Aubergine - First I really like the pacifics on you. I think the front vamp is slightly lower and hits you at a more flattering spot on the ankle and I love buckles and I think the heel is pretty with a slightly western feel that I personally adore. I find I like my chelseas with leggings or opaque tights but not with bare legs (personal preference) due to the high vamp, but mine are waterproof so that was the point of the purchase. The Pacific's height seems more versatile. Now onto your thoughts, you should love your booties and they should be comfortable. I get great happiness out of a great pair of boots, it's rare for something to grow on me if I was unsure. I'd try on other styles and see what calls to you. In comparison you might see what we do and really like them or you might find something else entirely that you truly love. Don't settle on this. Many options no reason not to love what you get!!

i agree with you about a higher shaft especially if one has narrow ankles. also the skirt length may be playing a role here because there is limited skin elsewhere to balance the skin exposed on the leg.

did you get booties specifically to wear with skirts? i can see both working with pants.

have you tried booties with low shaft that scoops down around the ankle bone i find those more flattering but are less bootie, more shootie.

The SE booties look wonderful on you but my concern is your hesitation...If you are just not in love and ready to walk out the door with these on, then I would definitely return them and keep looking..You are the deciding one with all the votes and if you aren't really excited over these booties, they need to walk back...

I prefer the Sam Edelman, as I feel they are a bit more feminine, and the other style of ankle boot (the J Crew one) will be outdated sooner (for women's trends I mean, not men's of course)... I also think the Pacific ones are more versatile, whereas the J Crew ones might not work with skirts and dresses as well... Just my opinion! Sam Edelman has quite a few models of black booties this season...

I agree that the J Crew ones look they don't fit right at the ankle. I think the Pacifics look good, but as you say, there are TONS of black booties out now. If I wasn't sure of the style I was looking for, I'd probably go to a DSW or something and just try on a lot of shoes, not worrying about finding the right pair, but just the right style - cut, toe shape, heel shape and height, any embellishment, so that I then could search for booties that were comfortable and well-made in that specific style.

Well ... I really love the Pacifics. It looks cooler and tougher than the jcrews, which look more classic to my eyes. And the fit clearly is not good for the jcrews. There seems to be a lot of space around the ankles, which is why the folding?

What is it about the Pacific's that you don't like? I wonder if they are too RATE for your style and if you crave simplicity?

So I'm shamelessly piggybacking on Jackie's post here. I also got a pair of black booties at NAS and have been idly wondering if there was a better option out there. Ironically enough, the ones I'd originally gotten were actually the Sam Edelman Pacific ones that she'd mentioned as a possible better option for herself.

Anyway, I'd been hesitating a little about the Pacifics. They fit great, are comfy, seem to suit me and my wardrobe, and would be useful, since a pair of flat black booties that straddle the work-weekend line would get lots of wear. Not sure exactly what my hesitation was, but I think I was wondering whether I should go for something trendier and more of a stretch rather than a total comfort-zone thing. Especially since flat black booties are everywhere and are probably the least fit- or size-challenged item of clothing I'm likely to be looking for for quite some time, so the universe of potential options is much wider than it usually is. For some reason, I hit on the idea that maybe my problem is that these are sort of Chelsea boots with the elastic and the tab on the back, but aren't 100 percent there. So I naturally concluded: Maybe a full-on Chelsea boot would be more like it?

I'd seen these J. Crew boots online and couldn't stop thinking about them even after they temporarily went out of stock, so I decided to order once I saw they were back. And … I don't think they quite work.

Something about the fit is odd. They kind of fold over and look galoshy at the front of the ankle, and the higher, more fitted shaft doesn't seem as flattering on my already-stumpy legs as the Pacifics. And, frankly, maybe the slightly earthier feel of the Pacifics just plain suits me better than the sleek, polished Chelseas. I'd been thinking the J. Crew pair would work for me precisely because it wasn't the sleekest pair ever (leather is more matte than glossy, toe isn't particularly pointy, etc.), but apparently not so much.

At any rate, I think I'm going to return the J. Crew ones. The Pacifics are growing on me after I've compared them to something else, but I'm still wondering if I should look for another option, or if that's just wasting my time. I kind of liked the Seychelles Melancholies that some people have (another Chelsea, but an even less sleek one), but I couldn't find my size in stock anywhere.

Any thoughts? Any honest feedback is welcome. I know I'm rambling. I also don't mean to sound like I don't like the Pacifics, because I do, and I'm indecisive and overthinky enough that this level of dithering isn't necessarily a danger sign.

#1-2 are the J. Crew ones. #3 has Pacific on the left and J. Crew on the right. #4 has J. Crew on top, Pacific on the bottom (and really tired, end-of-day face). A few more pics of the Pacifics on me are here.
