I don't think maxi's ever really go out of style, although the selection this year has been quite nice compared to recent years.

No, I am definitely not over maxi dresses, because I have been on the hunt for a suitable one for a while now, despite the seeming lack of popularity of them here. I really like that you can wear them comfortably without concern for weight fluctuations. I also like the drama of a full-length print. I have been looking for one that is bra-friendly, in a nicer fabric and a print and color that I like, and not too casual or skimpy up top (so that I could potentially wear it to work). One of my friends showed up in a maxi dress today, and it was PERFECT...the first one I've seen that met ALL of my criteria! I asked her where she got it, and she told me it was from Macy's. It isn't on their website anymore, but I managed to track one down on eBay and bought it. I feel kind of bad for copying her (I've never copied someone in real life, only YLF'ers), but I won't wear it in front of her, obviously! Which kind of limits its wearability, so I may be in search of another suitable maxi dress for my casual MOTG days with these friends.

Can't wait to see your maxi dress on, Cathy!

I love my maxis and, yes, Tampa is not far lol. I do think they are very occasion specific, for me at least. To date, I have only worn them within sight of the ocean or a lake - no kidding. Maybe it's my own hang up, but that's what makes me feel totally at ease in one.

Angie I remember when you said "never" about bikinis... :-)

That said, yeah, your climate isn't exactly casual dress wear. I developed a yen for the maxi after spending time with my BFF in Tampa, where the fashions are far more casual than what I'm used to in Boston. I splurged on these two because I expect a lot of Tampa visits in the future, but meanwhile I'm still getting wear out of them here in Boston, what with 90-100 degree weather we've been having.

Shiny, for the casual maxi dress and skirt look I will boldly say *never*, and I stand extremely firm on this. My eye is completely poisoned for the look. One of very few that I can count on less than one hand. Dressy and formal maxis I will wear with pleasure.

Not me! I still see them all over down here and while a lot of them are trashy looking (cleavage), some of them are beautifully styled and worn. I'll continue to wear mine even when no one else is, I didn't start wearing it because it was a trend, I started wearing it because I love it.

I like them, especially the ones that dont have spaghetti straps (they are cute too, but for the most part remind me of beachwear) I do find maxi skirts more flexible to wear, though...I hope the trend continues for at least another summer season.

I didn't think I liked maxi dresses. But last summer I went to the Lincoln Park section of Chicago to visit my daughter. We went out to dinner and walked around in a hip area of town with a lot of restaurants and boutique shops and all the pretty young things were out and about with their guys on date night and they looked stunning in their maxi dresses. Chic, modern, feminine, lovely. I changed my mind about this style. I don't own one, but after seeing how it can be done I have a new and real appreciation.

Shiny, the second one is especially appealing to me, because of the neckline! But sleeveless makes no sense for me, especialyl since the appeal of these dresses is in exposing shoulders rather than legs, yes? I hope you will post pics - would love to see a fellow petite rocking one of these!

I own a single maxi dress, which I purchased before maxi dresses were the thing, and which I LOVE more than anything. It is a mixture of different beautiful small jewel-tone florals, which comes to mid-leg and has a fitted top and a gently flowing skirt. Although now it is too big on top and has to be altered to fit (again), I still pull it out and admire it. It is so very pretty! And, because it is so freaking hot here, wearable 3/4 of the year.

Ciele, I have a sleeveless black linen maxi dress with slits like yours. It's at least 10 years old (last time casual maxis were in?) and I still wear it at least once every summer, as well as in winter with boots and a sweater, or random unexpected occasions (such as --"oh choir, let's have you all in ankle length black tomorrow").

Also we live near a popular beach and on a recent super hot day ( spent slaving in my garden) I watched the beachgoers straggle home in their shorts and swimsuits ... One woman was wearing a denim maxi skirt and long sleeved white linen shirt (hi Angie) and she looked so cool and chic and comfy it inspired me!

And like others have said, it's as comfy as a nightgown - -more so than sweats and way nicer looking!

I will never give up my maxi dresses and skirts. Speaking of which, why are so many people against it? I've noticed when I post a maxi outfit, I almost always get a few people who say they don't like the trend. Is there something I'm missing?

I don't think it's too late to buy that dress (which looks very cute) if you like the way it looks and know you'll wear it for a while.

I am more a fan of maxi skirts than dresses (because of style and fit issues mostly) but I actually think (sorry Angie) that maxis are something of a classic. There will always be women wearing them even if there are not a ton in stores and I think it's always appropriate for casual days and a sort of beachy vibe. I think pretty much every Resort collection has one or two maxi length skirts/dresses.

I think maxis are a great alternative to pants for those days when you don't want to wear pants but you do want your legs covered (i.e. can't be bothered to remove hair, legs covered in bug bites, or just want something freer than pants). I love the way they swish around my legs when I walk.

Actually, this is the first year that I've really seen a good selection of maxi dresses in the stores that are wearable by the general population (read: bra friendly) so I don't think maxi's will be out at least for a couple more summers.

I have been looking for one for ages that I don't have to wear special bra with, isn't clingy and isn't too low cut or too expensive since I really just want it more for loungewear (after beach or on vacation). I don't lead the California starlet life where it looks appropriate for shopping or out on the town. I finally found an inexpensive one at the Rack ($27) that is pretty good. Nice drapey knit, but I do have to wear a tank under it for cleavage coverage (although I could pin it if I was feeling daring) I loved them when I was 8 months pregnant in August since I didn't have to shave my legs (not that I could at that point)

I sure HOPE not, because I just bought two maxi dresses! Yes, me. I said I'd *never* wear a maxi, since I'm only 5 feet tall, I feared a maxi would swamp my frame. But I fell in love with two from Ann Taylor petites that fit perfectly and because they are "to scale" they somehow work. These are the ones I purchased (but in petite, not regular) --

http://www.anntaylor.com/ann/p.....Color=2040

and

http://www.anntaylor.com/ann/p.....Color=6600

What I love about them is that they are cool during the peak of day -- the fabric swishes around and doesn't cling to your legs -- while keeping my legs warm in AC (going in and out of stores or going to the movie theater). Plus they cover your legs from mosquitoes when sitting outside in the evening on the patio. They work for day with flat sandals for running errands, or evening with statement necklace and heels. They are also super comfy for just hanging out at home -- like wearing a full length nightgown.

I originally figured I'd wear them as beach cover ups (after a day in the sun I truly do want to cover up -- it's so hard to find cover ups that actually cover you up). But they are too nice for that.

So yes, I vote, get it!

I have not embraced the maxi dress trend BUT I have just purchased a black maxi skirt for spring! I love the look of this dress and if it looks good on you then I say why not.

I also was never into the maxi trend; I think it's way too saturated right now in the street and in fast fashion for me to be interested in it :)

I agree with you though - that dress looks easy to throw on!

I was never much into the maxi trend, since I'm short and thought most dresses I've seen to be better suited for evening wear, but then I tried on this maxi tee-shirt dress and it seemed to be a easy, throw-on alternative. What do you think, is it too late to dive into this trend? Or should I move on?
