I have broad shoulders too. I think V necks make my shoulders look more narrow, and I try to be careful about shoulder seams. If the shoulder seam drops at all, I avoid it. When I was younger I used to have a few tops that did not have any shoulder seams at all....the sleeve continued right up to the neck opening. This seemed to work better in my youth for some reason.

Marianne, I have broad shoulders, and there isn't one particular collar that I avoid, other than collars that are so big they go over the shoulders (you see this in sweaters sometimes), and even then it's a case by case thing. I look to avoid the same things you do--puffy sleeves, shoulder pads, sleeves that are stiff, so they stick out--that sort of thing.

Angie, are there similar things to watch out for if you have broad shoulders? The only things I try to avoid are puffy sleeves (and shoulder pads of course, I hope those are never coming back), but are there certain collars?

Yes. And the collar on my S&K trench is a statement, but not nearly as big. Have a squizz:

I think it's starting to make sense Angie. So, the collar of your beautiful Soia & Kyo trench works for a narrower shoulder because the lapels are closer to the neck line and smaller?

Naf, it’s hard to tell. Sometimes large lapels look great on a larger chest, especially if you have bit of height. Wish you do!

Quite right julijuli. Large collars do make narrow shoulders look broader – a good thing. But what’s more crucial is the placement of the collar up against the shoulder-neck-point. This is a must for narrow shoulders.

The lapels on this particular jacket are overwhelming. The model has board shoulders and pulls it off. I tried this trench on and it completely overwhelmed me even though I wear large collars well. ( It was also too big, but even so, it wouldn’t have worked in the right size because my shoulders are dainty). Does that make sense?

I've been looking at this trench as well, it is quite lovely! I worry about the wider lapels looking strange on my chest.

Angie - I saw this and thought it was beautiful too. When you say it needs a broad shoulder line does that mean that the wearer needs to have a body where her shoulders are wider than hips (ie. not a pear?). And, can you explain why this is so with this coat? I have a hard time figuring this out sometimes as I thought that the wider lapels would broaden a smaller shoulder. Thanks!

Did anyone come across this trench coat - http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....8&P=1 - as you hunted for your bargins?
