I love the aesthetics of berets (and newsies and cloches and fedoras...) but don't find them warm enough for winter temps. Once it's consistently below freezing I opt for beanies/toques all the time. I like that they stay put in the wind or layered underneath a hood, and that you get a double layer of ear protection on the ones with a folded brim! My most-worn hat is a bright red merino beanie. Most winter days in my neck of the woods, "usual" berets aren't warm enough, but luckily, I have three knitted soft berets that can cover my ears. The colours are solid pink, blue and grey. I also own three very warm knitted wool beanies in black&amp;white, white&amp;black and grey&amp;white. Finally, I have a solid grey beanie in a thick woven fabric. The latter as well as the three knitted berets are embellished with self-coloured bows. </p>
