I saw your bit about needing winter boots and then about minimalists living on the West Coast and I thought, but I'm north and can't do minimalist. Then I saw your boots in the picture, which look like winter boots to me and now I understand. I can get away with a lot fewer layers (but more than when I lived in Northern California).

Thanks all! :)

Winter boots are my nemesis -- the warm ones are stiff and heavy; the ones that are comfortable and cute aren't warm enough. I like boots, but not when the parameters include waterproof and insulated! I tried LL Bean boots last year, but they're built on a last that is all wrong for me. I do have more boots OTW already, so we shall see. :)

The number of jersey/knit tops is a little deceiving -- the stack of graphic tees in front is for sleep (and a couple for painting/gardening) and many of the rest are merino or heattech baselayers -- without which I would not survive winter. I don't think I even had long-sleeve cotton tops until I moved to Las Vegas, where it never got cold enough for my merino tops -- so that's when I started adopting breton tees and other long-sleeved tops in lightweight cotton, which I hadn't had in my closet for years. They are nice for early fall in New England, at least!

To be clear, I have no desire to be or call myself a minimalist, but I do want to wear all my clothes and enjoy them rather than feel overwhelmed by them.

It seems that your Fall/Winter wardrobe is in excellent shape! I see a reasonable amount of clothes, well chosen and varied color-wise. I agree that you need more clothes when the weather is variable! (said by a would-be minimalist who lives in a 4 seasons climate).

Well done. I also need boots. It would be scary to show the forum my snow boots. I would get kicked out. I need at least 2 maybe 3 pairs.
Your gear palette looks great.

Yes - I agree a four season climate brings different needs than a two season one....boot shopping here you come.

You've done an admirable job of editing and organizing. Now, another vote for Suz's advice: new coat & boots! They will add comfort, flexibility, and fun to your wardrobe--Winter gets dreary wearing the same jacket day after day. Zara has a large variety of stylish coats at reasonable prices--I'm flirting with a couple myself!

You don't have too many clothes at all. Living in a 4 season climate requires a lot more options than a temperate climate all year long.
I remember fondly of winters in Portugal where a wool coat was the warmest thing you had to wear twice a season.
When I see the bloggers you mention not only I wonder about weather variations but also about lifestyle. As Suz was saying different activities/ locations require different kinds of clothes even in the same season.
Now you have a defined list to shop for and also a concise color palette.
Looking forward to seeing your additions.

I too have noticed that bloggers that are truly minimalist do live in very temperate climates. It is just easier for them.

You definitely do not have too much -- and as a bossy YLF veteran I hereby order you to go coat and boot shopping!! I would say your current wardrobe looks rather small except for knit tops, as you say.

Also, you are SO right about many of the minimalist bloggers living in the west and south. It is definitely easier to make do with less if you live in a stable climate that does not have wild ups and downs and less precipitation (or all one kind of precipitation). Many often have either a very casual lifestyle or a very role defined one. It often frustrates me to hear their suggestion of "one coat" for example. I think -- first off, I have so many weather conditions and each calls for a different topper, and secondly, I just can't wear the same coat to go hiking in the woods as I would wear for a trip to the city to go to the theatre. Different occasions entirely.

It does take a while after a move to adjust your wardrobe for a new climate. I no sooner figured out my Vancouver climate than we moved back east and I had to figure it out all over again. :)

Impressive exercise.

You and I can go boot hunting together. Unlike you I desperately need some easy jersey tshirt-y tops that I can wear under cardies and jackets

As part of putting away my summer clothes, I did a complete fall/winter wardrobe audit yesterday. I don't have much that I want to cull this season -- we've moved twice in the past year, and I jettisoned a fair amount each time. I have about six items in a holding zone that aren't shown here. This also doesn't show my chore clothes (muck boots, painting clothes, etc) which are gross and live on the covered porch.

#1 - gear drawer -- nice tight color palette of black, turquoise, white and pink/purple.

#2 - shoes -- the lack of winter boots is glaring. I've tried a bunch on but haven't found the right ones yet. I'm working on adding more neutral shoes too. Colors are fun, but limiting!

#3 - coats, dresses, and button-front shirts. this feels very eclectic to me, partly because a lot of what's in here is very old -- a range of style eras, so to speak.

#4 - everything else: accessories, underpinnings, socks, loungewear, pants, sweaters, tees and pullovers. I was kind of amazed by how compact it looks, all laid out. There are a couple categories that could use bulking-up, and I won't be adding anymore cotton jersey tops anytime soon -- I have more than enough.

This was a fun activity for me, and more useful than doing a precise count. In the abstract, I sometimes feel like I have too much, but seeing it all out in the open like this, and how little space it actually takes up, makes me feel better, and also helps me see exactly what I'm missing: winter boots, winter socks, a long down puffer, lightweight layering sweaters, non-denim pants -- all of which I already suspected, but now it's confirmed. These wardrobe holes also make sense, coming from several years in a very hot, winter-free climate back to a four-season locale. I definitely need more clothes and more variety in New Hampshire than I did in Nevada. I've noticed that a lot of minimalist bloggers/advocates live on the West Coast or in the Southwest, and I do think it is much easier in those climates to get by with less.
