Una -- we use Bosu balls at the gym all the time and there is almost nothing you CAN'T do with one! Some of my faves:

1. Step ups. Put the ball against the wall, put the palms of your hands on the wall, put one foot on top of the ball, and just step up and down with the other foot. (I.e. right foot on the ball, left foot steps up on the ball, back on the floor, lather, rinse, repeat.)

2. Push-ups. Put either your hands or your feet (or your knees) on the ball and knock yourself out.

3. "Swimming." Lay on your back, hold the ball (flat side down) over your chest. Lift both feet about 6-12 inches from the floor and kick like you were swimming, without touching the floor.

4. This one is hard to describe, but I will do my best. Stand beside the ball, and sort of skip from side to side. If you start on the right side of the ball, you skip left and put your left foot on the ball briefly, then quickly replace it with the right foot, then your left foot lands on the floor. Kind of a step-together-step movement. You're going up on the ball, then down to the floor, in a sideways movement. This one will get your heart rate going FAST!

5. Wall sits. Put the ball against the wall, stand on the ball with both feet on the top and your back against the wall. Bend your knees until only your butt is on the wall. Hold until you scream.

6. With the ball against the wall, stand on the ball facing the wall, put both hands flat on the wall at chest height, bend your knees, and alternate stamping your feet as fast as you can: left right left right left right. Try to do it hard enough so you can hear your footsteps. Trainer Dave always says "try to pop the ball!"

7. Bridges. Lie on your back on the floor, put your feet on the top of the ball, hands at your sides with palms on the floor, butt close to the ball, and lift your butt as high as you can -- ideally only your shoulders should be on the floor as you "bridge."

8. Crunches. Sit on the ball, just below the top, knees bent and feet flat on the floor, and do your crunches.

9. Planks. Put your forearms on the ball and your toes on the floor, or your toes on top of the ball and your forearms on the floor, keep your body straight and parallel to the floor, and hold. You can also do this as a side plank with one foot stacked on top of the other foot.

10. "Superman." Get on your hands and knees on the floor with one knee on top of the ball. Lift the leg that is not on the ball so it is straight out behind you, level with your back. Foot flexed, pushing back with your heel. Lift the opposite arm so it's straight out in front of you, thumb up. All your weight will be on the leg that is on the ball. Hold. Switch sides, repeat. If you want a real challenge, try to lift your toe off the floor and just balance on your knee.

I guess the worry comes from the fact that this is a change...or it sounds as if it was a change from before? But I will say this, that if you have recently lost weigh it may take a while for things to "settle." And belly fat can be slower to go, even in women whose body type doesn't predispose them to develop a little bump there.

While I agree that exercises, like planks, can make a difference, I also think that some women are naturally predisposed to having a more rounded tummy than others. My sister, who weighs quite a bit more than me, has always had a perfectly flat tummy, while I have always had a slightly rounded one. It's just the way our bodies are shaped.

Exercises to strengthen your core will make some difference, but, if your weight is good, then it's probably more about body shape than anything else.

I gained 35 pounds when I moved from Europe to North America <shudder> I know a lot of people gain wait on changing cultures due to a new food and life style changes. It is also a stressful time and food is a great de-stresser I guess.
I second Mo's yoga "planks"- they are great to work the core muscles.

What Una said - I'm in pretty good shape, I get lots of exercise, and I'm a healthy eater (mostly Indian vegetarian, with some seafood), but I still don't have a flat belly. I'm coming around to think I probably won't - especially as I get older, and given my body type (plus looking at my 72 year old slim mom, who's in terrific shape but does not have a flat belly tells me where I'm headed). I've embraced my lack of a flat belly as part of my body (mostly), but I, too, am paying attention to what people say here.

Sometimes, when we gain weight and then lose it again, it doesn't come off the same places it went on. For example, many women gain a lot of weight in pregnancy, and a common complaint is that afterward, even if they lost every pound, their body shape has still changed a bit. Also, the older you get, the more likely you are to retain body fat around your middle.

However, there are other things besides body fat that can cause a protruding belly. Gas and bloating are one. PMS bloating is a biggie, too. It could even be something like uterine fibroids -- I know all about this one, because last year I had a cantaloupe-sized fibroid surgically removed! It was big enough to make me look 4 months pregnant. Now my belly is back to what it was pre-fibroid. Anyway, it might be something worth looking into if you feel your belly sticks out more than it used to, and it doesn't seem to be extra adipose tissue.

Congrats on your weight loss!!

As for the tummy...has your diet changed much since your move? I would be wondering about food intolerances.

Also, as Mo says, you might want to work on core muscles. Not that it's possible to "spot reduce." It is not. But muscle takes up less space than fat. In general, muscle building, resistance training would be good to add in to a walking/cardio program.

Walking is one of the best exercises for burning fat. And it can be so easily incorporated into daily life without requiring any special equipment, other than friendly shoes. I do the vast majority of my walking in "normal" shoes, i.e. not running shoes or gear of any kind.
