Update!

I went to the MAC counter and, although I tried on almost all the colors that appealed to me, none of them flattered my skin tone. However, I am *super* impressed that the swatch of longwear gloss they put on my hand is still there after 24 hours (and several bouts of hand washing and sanitizing).

BUT, thanks to BJ and Rimmel London, I think I may have found what I was looking for! I went to 3 different CVS locations before finding some good colors, because they were on sale for B1G1 50% off. I bought two mauve-ish colors, a brighter pink, and a "smokey" layering shimmer color. I just tried the mave (color 08) at home, and it looks very nice! Near a match for my natural lip, but brightens and evens them out. Smell is wonderful... almost gourmand and goes away quickly. Feels great - neither greasy nor dry. Assuming this holds up for the long haul, I will be thrilled!

Ooh, thanks, BJ. Nice to hear from a fellow dry-lipper on this issue - and they have it at CVS? I will have to give it a try - PS, I see it is on sale at Walmart for $4! I'd get it there if Walmart wasn't in a really inconvenient area for me.

i have tried all of them because i have dreadful chapped lips even in the summer. this is what i use at night (!) to keep my lips moist (better than chapstick or vaseline). i also wear it outside of the house, but it is INTENSE color and more on the matte side. i have shade 01...super red. bonus...available at cvs for less than a ten-spot.

http://rimmel.rimmellondon.com.....collection

for moisturizing gloss, i LOVE lancome color fever in on fire (a burgundy-ish color) and tumultuous (a golden brown/dark beige--which is neutral on my dark lip).

http://www.sephora.com/color-f.....G-_-pla-_-{keyword}&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=952648

both of these last an 8hr day. i reapply the gloss if i have a real meal (not snacks) even if i start with the lipstick. then i mash my lips together and smear what is left of the original lipstick from the lip edge to the center.

I've tried makeup at the counter in the MAC store before. I'm going to throw in Laura Mercier tinted lip balm for consideration, too--I recently purchased it because I was desperate for a non-drying lip product with some color (my lips get dried out from everything, even moisturizing high-end brands), and it's decent for a sheer wash over my unevenly pigmented lips.

Have you tried the new Revlon Just Bitten Balm? It's not really a lipstain, but it's a dupe of Clinique's Chubby Crayon. I use that one quite a bit; I apply in the morning and don't usually wear gloss, and I usually reapply after lunch. I don't really need to, but I like greasy lunch (Mmmm, chicken mcnuggets!)

I also had a lot of fun with Physician's Formula pH Lip Gloss in Neutral Pink (Light Pink?); it was a freebie with my pH blush and I liked it so much I went out and bought a ton of blush (because it was cheaper that way than to get the lip gloss itself!) - the gloss lasts about 3-4 hrs, but you get a really pretty tint afterwards that lasts all day!

:) These are my cheap suggestions! I have tried the actual Clinique Chubby Crayon, and I find it comparable to the dupe. I heard the pH lipgloss is a dupe too (Versace?). So fun!

ETA: Both are super easy to use and apply - I usually apply them while waiting for the LRT or actually being on the train (haha). When I was travelling recently, the pH lip gloss was the only lip product (aside from night balm) I took with me! Now that tube is gone. Grr.

I love the shades of MAC but found them to be too drying. And, I'm a drugstore gal. I'd rather buy several tubes for the price of an expensive one, and play.

I can give you a rave review for this:

http://www.covergirl.com/lipperfectionlipcolor

Seen below. I picked this up (along with a couple other drugstore brands) a few weeks ago. It's my new favorite. DH's favorite too. He adores this on me.

REVIEW:

1) It stains your lips All. Day. Long. Don't be surprised if you wake up and still have some color. It's that good.

2) It doesn't dry, like many lip-staining brands do. That said, it's also not super moisturizing; I add a layer of chapstick about halfway through the day to spruce it up a bit.

3) It glides on super easy -- have not gotten it on my teeth once yet (hazard when you have trouble focusing up close with contacts already in). Have even applied it in the car, moving, (DH driving, not me). No lip brush and extra fussiness required.

The shade I'm wearing below is called Tempt 355. I'd only just applied it (I deliberately do not wear lipstick when I'm getting my hair colored as I don't want to sway the results). I would take a pic for you now, 8 hours later, but I'm in my jammies. It's not quite that red now, but pretty darn close. After eating drinking etc.

Rae - that lipstick that you returned for me at Sephora (Makeup Forever) is supposedly really good. Vicki uses it and recommended it to me. The only reason I returned it was because it was the wrong color on me. Also, MAC has a long-lasting lipstick that if you cover with the gloss that comes with it, does not seem to dry out the lips.

I second Angie on the MAC products. I use both their lipstick and their lipgloss (called Lipglass). Either one has staying power without any drying out. In fact, the Lipglass is the only lipgloss I like - not too shiny, doesn't taste yucky...I will apply it when I leave the house for work and don't have to put anymore on until lunch time, and that includes having a cup of coffee.

Jack black lip balm is AWESOME! My hubby loves the stuff and his lips crack majorly in the winter. I love FRESH lip balm myself. A little pricier though. I get both from Sephora.

I should add these are more of lip balms, so if you want color the Fresh brand does have some colored ones. I've only ever used the clear balm though.

I think there was a thread about this a year or so ago, but was wondering if there might be any new technology out there... With my new job, it is pretty impossible to reapply lip stuff throughout the day, and I like the look of a more "finished" face with the super casual uniform tee. Anyone have a favorite?

What I've already tried that did NOT work for me:
- Lipsense (stays but is drying and creates nasty clumps of lip skin)
- ELF (comes off, is drying, and creates nasty lip clumps)
- Covergirl lip stain (too sheer for my unevenly pigmented lips)
- Revlon(??) Just bitten lip stain (same as above, poor colors for me)
