Great boots - what a pleasant discovery for you! I love #2 as well. You know, when you weren't happy in your husband's gray sweater it must have been the fit and not the color. I like Joy's suggestion of a scarf. I find that even a light weight scarf adds warmth when I'm around the house.

#2 is brilliant. The rich brown and wine trousers - just the right amount of slouchy there. I like the structured top with the bottom (structured in the sense of Angie's definition as showing your form). I'd really like a topper in either that brown or wine colour to go with. Maybe one with precision shoulders...

I think you look great! The colors are lovely. When I got my hair cut shorter I found I was cold a lot. I started wearing scarves and that made all the difference.

MG, that's fair enough! Sorry I forgot you weren't teaching at the moment.

You know, I didn't discover the magic of wool sweaters until after my four years of college in the midwest (including studying abroad in Russia)! Not coincidentally, that's also when I discovered thrifting (2008 I think?). I just shake my head in wonder sometimes. But oh well, at least I know about them now. And my mom sent me silk long johns my freshman year (that I still have) so at least I had those! lol

"Rich, moody, and flattering," Suz, I am going to hire you to narrate my life!

Azriphale, I don't know why my feet are growing! I even posted a thread about it few months ago asking if this was one of those things that happens in the 40s that no one tell you about! But my toes are creeping over the edge of sandals I've had for years, and pushing up against boots and shoes that used to be oh so comfortable.

E, since I am currently unemployed and will be leaving the museum in a few weeks (although I do my research there, my salary has been paid the last few years by teaching), I've decided that I'm not allowed to buy clothing for now - yes there will be exceptions (I just bought 2 new bras), and if I told my husband how cold I am he'd immediately tell me to go buy what I need, but the intent is to shop my closet while I figure out what sartorial direction I want to go next. (Hence the weird experimenting!) Truthfully I've been cold at work every winter, and this is the first winter I've actually been comfortable - because I've been wearing husband's (too big) wool sweaters. It amazes me how stupid I can be sometimes!

I think you look great! Love the colors in your outfit and I agree that the boots bookend your hair nicely. Sorry you were cold, that's one of the worst feelings. I've been wearing a lot of scarves lately to keep warm.

Great boots! And love the colour palette.

Weird question: why are your feet growing? Did the podiatrist say? I didn't know that could happen outside of pregnancy…? (hooray, a new thing to worry about)

Wow you look simple and beautiful in 2! And you're right that you look smaller, although when you're wearing your husband's clothes they look roomy, so my eyes assume you're smaller underneath. (Does that make sense?)

Could you have worn silk or wool long johns underneath for warmth? Since it's so cold in your workplace, it might be worth it to spend some money on them as you'd likely wear them a lot!

Alternatively, do you have toppers (either shirts or jackets) that have a bit of waist definition? Not cinched, as that wouldn't be practical for all of the moving you do, but a bit of a curve, would, I think, add a touch of nostalgia. I do love the texture of the corduroy.

And those boots are wonderful: how lucky to 'find' them in your closet.

Whoa!! I wasn't sure what to expect from the description, but then I saw, not only the gorgeous high-quality boots, but your outfit in #2, which completely wowed me! I think that is one of your best looks yet. Rich, moody, and extremely flattering. Yet also appropriate to your work and life. In the photo, at least, the colours look great on you, although I'm sure you have a clearer perception of that IRL. Anyway - I love it!

The second photo shows the depth and richness of grey, brown and burgundy. Could you add a soft wool scarf for more warmth?
A jacket rather than the over shirt in #3 might add more warmth and polish, if you want it.

SYC perfection! I love #2! It looks amazing on you. And congrats on the "new" boots.

As for warmth, I frequently layer under than over. Partly because I hate being constricted by a jacket, partly because I am warmer that way. I regularly wear a cami, tee under a top if the top is thin.

All what Diane said is true to my eyes, too! But, I wouldn't call that sweater grey, it's kind of taupe to me, which is a warmer shade, and matches dark browns, maroon so very well! I love the warm scheme here very much, and as for the boots, WHY NOT? This outfit looks so rich to me and well put together, which I love, and of course YLF MGirl!:-)

These men's Frye boots have been in my "one day I need to figure out how to sell on eBay" pile for a couple of years, because they are about a size too big. But the other day I read an article by a podiatrist who recommended Frye boots for the kind of foot problems I have. And I thought, "Hmm, I've been bitching about my feet growing ..." So I pulled them out, put in an insert, and they fit! Added bonus - the deep dark mahogany brown is a much better bookend for my hair than either black boots or the lighter brown boots from the other day.

I'm still experimenting with these maroon pants, and since I got the YLF OK for brown boots and a grey top before, that's what I did. I was cold so added this olive cord overshirt (but it wasn't enough; I actually came home early because I wasn't dressed warmly enough). My jade beads are black, brown, white, and green, so they seemed a perfect match. Pic 4 is me trying to show my ohm hoop earrings, but you can't really see them.

Overall I like the simple silhouette of this, and Pic 2 (with a shirt that is not my husband's, and thus not a couple sizes too large) reminds me that wearing over-sized clothing makes me look larger than I actually am. However now that winter is really and truly here, and my summer tan a distant memory, I think these colors are too muted for me. Time to dig out my cobalts and fuchsias!

Comments and suggestions appreciated.
