Maybe the thing is, I'm totally into waist surrendering... On a tangent, my mom is too preppy for AD - which I think is fascinating.

So funny, Rachylou! I hope it's not the shoes that bring down any style quotient here, because a) they look like pointy toes to me (as pointed as I go, anyway!) and b) they look like shoes I would wear! Ha ha!
Somehow I don't picture you in these outfits, though. Your style is quirkier than matched-set wear, isn't it?
Anyway, my mom is an Alfred Dunner fan. We just got her some new pants and tops when I was visiting a month ago. She is in her 80s. However, I think she has been wearing this style for maybe a few decades. I'm glad there are clothes like these that she enjoys wearing and that she looks very nice wearing. She will go to Nordstrom with me and browse in the shoe department, but there is absolutely nothing beyond the shoe department (and very little there) that she would wear, fit- or style-wise. It seems so odd to me, but it's true.

I do have an Alfred Dunner item and it is polyester but I had to look at the tag to know that because it looks like a textured matte heavy cotton blazer. I got it because of the superb fit, particularly well made in the shoulder.

But I do know two women who are regular customers and they aren't anything like has been described. One is a retirement age military wife who has lived around the world and has an air of being able to handle anything life throws at her. She always looks to me like someone on the way to or from the golf course. Very much a sportswoman look. She likes the brand for how well made they are. Her clothes are nothing like those linked on their website, though. She looks more like a page of the LL Bean catalog of yore, come to life. Wholesome outdoors look.

The other is in her 70's, still beautiful, with a cloud of white hair. Art degree in her native country and business degree in this one, so as to handle her rental properties. She's in the habit of climbing up to a three story roof to see that the work she ordered was properly done. Her everyday look is Alfred Dunner for the value and that it gives her the proper fit, since she's a petite plus. Her taste is for the more subdued items, though. Again, not like those pictured on the website. In what little leisure time she has, she's a regular symphony and opera goer and she really dresses glamorously for that.

Alfred Dunner has a customer! I've been in retail for 45 years and I've worked where we carried this line...I always said I'd never wear it...but unfrumped makes some cogent observations. My mother was a stylish woman with a slim figure but age does put restrictions on what you can wear. She loved AD and similar lines for the ease and practicality. She'd wear an outfit like Alfred Dunner to a luncheon or other outing with her senior citizens' group and be the best dressed person there. So,leave no retail stone unturned! Even as we age.

I actually get why you like these! They are both very retro.
Number one has that Audrey Hepburn kind of vibe and the second is straight up Carol Brady.
I would look awful in these but I think you could make it work ( I agree with everyone else though depending on the fabric...some Alfred Dunner is dreadful..my local Macy's seems to cater entirely to the wash and wear over a certain age set and has quite a selection of AD)

Well, I usually give AD a wide berth. But I don't make fun of "the older set" because I had to shop for and outfit my mom in the last 5 years of so of her life, not in AD but in rather pedestrian items, as she could not negotiate the cut of most "stylish" clothing, we had to size up to get things on & off easily and so she could dress herself, hems could not be such that she would trip, she preferred natural fabrics, and there were various issues, as many of you may understand.
So at some point, the best I could go for were colors that looked good on her, and coordinated tops & bottoms, needed mix & match to some extent, and machine washable without any pampering whatsoever.

AD- It's not always a matter of age, but circumstances and health. I know several older females in my extended family who, as they became frail and unable to shop independently as well as do far more critical (but mundane) daily activities, found the easy matching and the elastic waists compelling. I think maybe feeling like you could choose it, but not NEED it, changes the dynamic a bit.

I am half-way there on footwear, due to an injury. It feels out sync, even at 60.

Give it a little time, Rachy.

My mother likes them, but laughs at herself for liking them. In her defense, it is seriously difficult for the over 80 set to find clothes. I think I have problems, but she struggles even more. We wouldn't have opportunities to (laugh, snicker, smile indulgently?) if designers would stop ignoring them and start adapting real, beautiful style to their needs.

Ah, Alfred Dunner, the province of the over-80 set... The thing that always gets me about AD is the fabrication of the pieces; lots of that indestructible polyester that gives me flashbacks to my childhood. Other than that, some of the prints are charming, in a retro sense. I can see the appeal - we've gone so far along the solid colors, normcore line that floral prints and matchy matchy outfits are refreshingly different.

Call me crazy, but sometimes there will be items that remind me of runway things. Anyways, right, certainly it's *a* style, but stylish is another ball of wax... is it the round toe flats in most of the pics? Am I just a complete nut?
