I also grew up in Alaska (mostly Anchorage and Wasilla) and while I never visited Whittier, I did know some people that lived there. They all couldn't wait to get out. Of course, at the tiem we were all teenagers, so I'm sure that contributed to it too haha

There are lots of small communities in bush Alaska but usually there is SPACE - the idea of being bunched together like this, well - it's like District 13 in the Hunger Games.

Funny Una! I also cannot imagine people living in those conditions - weather OR proximity to each other. Yikes! It reminds me of those Sci-Fi movies where the last people on earth are stuck in some capsule or something and if you get sick they banish you out into the cold.

HAHAHA! WHITTIER! There was a great nightclub here years ago that did a song with the line "Nothing could be sh*ttier, than to find yourself in Whittier in the mo-orning...."

Yes, I have been to Whittier. It's a launching point for trips into Prince William Sound, and we've done multiday kayaking there. It is a VERY small community. Much more accessible since they built a tunnel that allowed the train and vehicles to get there rapidly.

a family friend has moved into an apartment in Boston that is connected at to the shops at the Pru, so she can, if she wishes, get by without going outside. for elderly people, esp those in cold, snowy climates, its ideal. you can keep your independance, and not have to worry about the weather.

How interesting!
This reminds me of when I was looking for post-doc positions and interviewed for one in NYC. One of their "selling points" was that the subsidized housing (which was admittedly very nice and extremely reasonable for manhattan housing) was in the same high rise building as the lab and since it was NYC you could have everything delivered so you'd never have to leave the building. It really freaked me out, especially because if you are going to live in NYC why on earth would you want to spend all your days without going out into the city?!?!

I'm wondering if Una has been to this town of course. Saw it in the news and thought it was just so incredible. Can you imagine a whole town living in one building? Well at least nearly everyone. Having a family member who lives in a large condo in Florida always made me wonder why they didn't have more amenities in the condo - like a store, or other entertainment options. Many of the seniors don't really leave the condo often and could use the services. This proves it could work.
