For blazers, it looks like 1-2” above the leg join is ideal when worn with pants. You don’t want to go too high on the hip at all.

For jean jackets, somewhere around mid to high hip.

Yes, I think I understand about the proportions. I find a long straight blazer looks not-quite-right with my shorter legs...although with high-rise pants, maybe the silhouette would be ok.

I find this very helpful because I can never figure out how long jackets should be. I have always preferred shorter toppers. When jackets get around my hips it feels like a big arrow pointing to my widest point. I also like waist emphasis but that has nothing to do with length.

I think it depends in part on height and body type modifiers and the rest of the outfit because it's all about proportion. I have blazers both long and shorter. The one in the first picture hits me around my high hip -- it can be worn with dresses, wide legs, and slim jeans. The next two are longer, closer to low hip length. For this to work on my short legged self, I like a jacket that emphasizes the waist a bit and it's most flattering if I can wear a column of colour or a tonal look. Obviously with the bright pink jacket that's not likely and it's also a bit of a more traditional "mannish" cut (less sharp shouldered and waist emphasis than the Reiss) -- so I almost always wear it with a bit of a heel. I never wear these longer blazers with skirts or dresses.

The next four jackets are various styles but all are shorter. The blue military sweater jacket is quite cropped, like a short cardigan, really. The red one is a bit longer. Both of these work well with wide legs, culottes, etc. as well as a slimmer trouser. The tux jacket is long enough that it does not look great with a wide skirt (but will work with a sheath). The tweed jacket is a little longer on me than the model.

I tend to like motos and denim jackets a bit cropped -- it's just easier to wear them as I would like then.

I really like the Boden jacket. My problem is that I am tall and I think it would look silly on my frame.

Jane, it's a look. You either like the effect or you don't. Otherwise stick to short sleeve or sleeveless tops/dresses under that type of jacket.

Great question. The details on the length question is one to keep in mind when shopping.

Angie, a bit off topic but I do find the pink Boden looks a bit odd to my eye with the long sleeve below.

Queen Pedantic About Lengths reporting for duty. I can't help but be very particular about lengths - it's my thing. It's not as important to most people, but if you're going to ask me - I will have very strong opinions about it :)

It depends on the jacket, Smittie - just to keep it complicated. Very generally:

I tend to like the modern classic blazer a little longer - see #1 - #3.

Other jackets I like shorter like the Boden and Kate Spade retro styles in #4 and #5.

Fitted motos and fitted denim jackets look better shorter to my eye - see various pics. All excellent lengths.

Cocoon blazers I prefer longer than mid-thigh - see last pic.

Dear Fabbers,
Just curious to know whether there is a rule about how long a jacket should be when paired with pants. Angie, you recommend lengths that are longer than I expect, but am not 100% sure about the exact length.

I would like to know for future purchases (I won’t be purging any of my current jackets :-))
