Karie--running through my old posts, and saw I never responded. I love that idea for fashion sneakers--wearing them with dresses and skirts. You could always do a pair of converse, but I love the idea of a sleek, fashion-forward set with a dress.

I love and wear both. I wear athletic sneakers most of the time, probably because I’m usually outdoors hiking, walking/playing fetch with my dogs, kayaking, paddle ball, etc., you name it I’ll try it.
But then I also love my collection of fashion sneakers, which don’t see as much wear, but will be having their moment as soon as our weather warms up and I can wear them with summer dresses and skirts.

cat2--I still need to get a pair of Skechers. I would love to see those Reeboks. I am debating a classic pair, but found a really fun pair on Poshmark. Black high tops is the thing I want.

elpgal--good vote for the budget shoes. I will try to remember those.

Suz--tried and true is not a bad strategy. I like those shoes, and I think the most interesting to me are the black trail runners. Growing up in a hiking town, we are used to brown, dirty shoes. I love that you could wear those and keep them relatively smart because of the color.

Joy--good thing they are making a lot of slip-on sneakers lately, which I have yet to try!

Lisa--yes, I have not seen leather/vinyl sneakers promoted for this purpose, but maybe they should be. I feel like a lot of people are actually kind of befuddled as to what shoes to wear in the rain.

Bonnie--I love all those colors of New Balance. I know they do a lot of running shoes, but I love this classic design. It looks very versatile.

Bijou--those Moschinos are great, but I really love those Nikes. I don't think I've seen them before, and they have such a distinctive look. They would look great with shorts, or a skort or something.

Kate--I have never heard of those brands. What a big sneaker universe it is! People are saying that the fashion brands are more comfortable.

Janet--it is such a great color of Converse--I call that Krishna blue, after the religious paintings. I used to have a deeply personal relationship with Converse--dyeing them, painting them, etc. I, too, would baby that pair.

JP--I did look up those Barefoot sneakers. I think they look cool--but it really depends on the context. Running around a hiking trail they look like the latest fashion. But maybe heading into a city bistro, less so.

Carol - I've worn my leather sneakers in rain and light snow (just starting to fall snow not a heavy snowfall). The leather has worked well when the grounds not wet and icy enough to need the traction of a boot yet. The green Spring Steps are waterproof and the bottoms have more traction on them, I've worn them in the rain and they've done well. I have not tried them in the snow.

Shoes must slip on and off as bending over to undo shoestrings gets hard as one gets older. The doctor told me years ago not to wear sandals or heels. I have gotten used to it and balance does not trouble me as much.

Lisa--very cute sneakers. I wonder about what you said about leather sneakers being good for winter. What an interesting concept. I wonder just how much "weather" they can stand.

StyleFan--those are not bad--I especially like the black ones. Comfort is becoming more important to me these days.

Sal--I find all your sneakers cute. You said you are not crazy about casual wear with sneakers, but yours would look great with snappy summer items, like a skort or bermuda shorts.

Carla--I, too, am a fan of chucks, though I have not worn them in years. I like how you say that for running around town, shoes like these are fine. Often that is all we need to do. The Vejas are intriguing, but wearing them 5/7days, are they hard to keep clean?

Jaime--I am also a big thriftier, and it is true--sneakers are not always a great find. Boots, loafers, these things...can be a great deal, though.

I guess I took a while to get back to this post...

LJP--wow, I would like to see your closet! Probably eye-opening to see the two sets together to compare.

Angie--thanks for sharing. Nice stuff. I really like the looks of those white ones at the bottom--Eccos, I think. Love the large metal lace holes that make it feel sporty.

Dee--thanks for sharing. By rocker sole, I am assuming you mean the shape of the sole. Those Skechers are cute--that brand came up with their own look entirely, it seems.

Ket--those are cute--would look great with shorts, jeans, whatever.
It's funny--I'm 45, and I have been wearing comfort shoes off and on for at least a decade. A fashion vlogger my age said to NEVER do that, but they make some cute ones these days!

JAileen--or do you need the silver Adidas? Maybe you do! I think I have gazelles, too, mine are baby blue with neon green stripes. I like yours--I'd probably get the most use out of the charcoal ones.

I can't wear totally flat shoes like Converse. Most of my sneakers (both fashion and walking or running) are Ecco -- actually, maybe all are, at the moment! -- and I include my own Superfeet insoles to make these wearable, because otherwise they would not be. I also have a pair of Salomon trail runners that I like.

I've tried other brands without success -- I will think, at first -- oh, these work! -- only to be disappointed in the wearing. So I stick with the tried and true.

I’m not a sneaker person. I do have a couple of retro pairs I wear a bit: a Kate Spade ivory sneaker cut like my 70s white Keds, and a Reebok reissue of the high tops I wore in the 90s. Everything else is just functional: Brooks and Merrell for walking and hiking, and slip on Skechers for plane travel.

As others have mentioned, comfort and purpose really matter when it comes to sneakers. I have fussy feet and bunions, so finding the right pair is a bit of a journey, for instance Adidas didn't work for me. I own a few pairs—Ecco Soft 7 (which I had high hopes for but find a bit uncomfortable), New Balance for exercise, and some fashion sneakers from Dr. Scholl’s and Clarks, etc. Recently, I picked up a pair of Barefoot, zero-drop sneakers after hearing so much about their benefits for strengthening foot and leg muscles. I'm still getting used to their wide appearance, so for now, I’ll be wearing them mostly at the gym.

I love sneakers and have a collection that ranges high-low. Some brands others love for comfort do not work for me at all — Ecco, Nike… But I do well with Adidas. Converse I can wear in some styles — the lower canvas versions and sized down, or the lined high-top leather version. The turquoise Converse are some of my favorite comfortable shoes and I am kind of babying them now because they don’t make that color anymore.

I have some designer sneakers: Stella McCartney, Louboutin, and Chloe. I would not say they are my most comfortable but I can do a four-mile day in them. The Chloe are the most comfortable. But I love the looks of all of these and wear them happily for the right occasions.

I do well day-to-day with some of the mid-range brands: my Onitsuka Tigers are great, Nero Guiardini and Rag & Bone are pretty good too. My old Sam Edelmans are ridiculously comfortable. Some brands are just cut too wide, especially in the heel.

I like and wear both, but comfort is the main criterion. Without actually counting, I think my sneaker collection would definitely skew to the fashion side. My feet are increasingly fussy, and I've found that sneakers from some of the German brands like Gabor, Rieker and its sister brand Remonte fit me really well once I get the size right, and the quality is top notch.

I love sneakers and mainly wear Nike because I found the perfect combination of comfort and style with Nike Air 96 and have been wearing these for many years, with my collection below.

I have bought one pair of 'high fashion' sneakers, with my Moschino platform sneaker now 3 years old. For me, this was a wildcard splurge purchase. I'm not willing to pay a designer price for shoes unless there is something different about the shoe to justify paying a premium price. The great thing about the platform sneaker is that they are an everyday walkable shoe. Not as comfy as my Nike - but they are a fun wardrobe addition, and I can see me wearing these for many years to come. I would be tempted to buy another such designer shoe, and it would only be a walkable sneaker or boot, if it was special enough.

I wear sneakers year round and Converse and New Balance work well for me. The low top Converse is for home wear but I got a new pair of high top leather Converse for an up coming trip to NYC. The New Balance sneakers have all be worn on repeat and are great walking shoes. My sneakers seem to fit in the fashion category rather than the sport category although I think they are more in the comfort category.

I am not a big sneaker person compared to other shoes, but I have a few. My most comfortable pair is a pair of Margiela Replica sneakers that I found on consignment a few years ago. I also like Veja.

Regardless of fashion trends, I’ve preferred low profile sneakers for running around, but worn thicker soled running shoes for actual running and fitness activities. Mostly I wear Converse Chuck Taylor Low Tops. They just work for my feet, and I like the grippy rubber bottoms. Last fall I bought a pair of Puma athletic shoes for fitness activities, but then the ‘look’ of the specific shoes I picked up started popping up in fashion street wear photos - so I wore them for both fitness activities and fashion. I liked the messaging behind the Veja brand, and a Canadian store with great return policies carries this 20 yo French brand made in Brazil - so I decided to give them a try. I’m very happy with them, and have worn them 5 days out of 7 since buying them. I will admit I learned about the Veja brand from an ‘influencer’ who is a fan of the brand - but I sat on the purchase for over a year, and I don’t know if they are thought of as trendy.

I mix it up too.

I own two pairs of athletic sneakers (one I don't have a find for), court sneakers and three pairs of fashion sneakers. I can't wear Nike for some reason, and converse don't work either. Adidas, Asics and Puma all work. My Hoka only get a pass mark - I don't love them.

My most comfortable shoes are my hiking shoes - Merrells - I can wear these for several days in a row. So much that I am considering getting some Merrell sneakers too.

I do sometimes wear the athletic sneakers with jeans or casual wear but it's not my favourite look. But when I travel I always take athletic sneakers and so this has to be the case to minimise on packing.

I adore fashion sneakers and own quite a few, it's the largest part of my shoe wardrobe. I put my current sneaker collection in the finds.

I'm pretty selective on brands because comfort must come first for me. I had foot surgery years ago and I will not wear uncomfortable shoes or sneakers. I do not believe in "sitting shoes" even for special occasions.

In general, Ecco works quite well for me, and I've been adding them over time, I really like their leather styles for the winter months and business casual settings. They also last a long time, which has given me a chance to collect over time.

I only found one Adidas style that works for me, the Breaknet Sleek, all others are too narrow in the toe box and too hard for the soles.

I would happily duplicate the Taos in another color if I saw one, I liked, the canvas material is wonderful in the summer months when it's hot outside.

I also have athletic sneakers for activities. My go to brand is Asics for the wider toe box and cushioning. I have one pair of Nikes that work for weightlifting because they have a harder sole than a regular sneaker, but it's rare Nike's work for me (they are usually too narrow in the toe box). I've never had New Balance or Converse fit my feet correctly, so I've stopped trying them at this point.

The Spring Step are waterproof and while they don't have the same "give" as other sneakers (they are more structured, like a shoe), they do work well in wet weather.

The madden girl I added solely because of the red color which is a perfect match for my favorite sports team. I added an insole for extra comfort.

The Isle Jacobsen Tulip sneaker is the only sneaker I don't wear with a sock or foot ped because you'd see it with the mesh material. I had to add a heel grip to get a proper fit for these and I'm rather surprised they work for my fussy feet because I generally tend to prefer to wear a sock when possible.

I like old school Adidas. I have blue, charcoal and olive. Because of my foot problems, I have to wear metatarsal pads. Since the pads are bulky, I have the men’s versions. Mainly, they are just wider. I also have a pair of Stan Smiths from NAS years ago. I’d love to get silver Adidas, but I just don’t need them.

LJP, I'll have to try Dolce Vita. I was wondering if they were any good or not.

I don't shop Gucci, unless I find a treasure when thrifting. I've worn Aisic Tigers and enjoyed them, though still wore them mainly as a fitness shoe versus an everyday "fashion" shoe.

Currently, I really prefer a wider width now but like a very retro looking tennis shoe. I found this to be a harder combo to find in modern sneakers and footwear, so I haven't really shopped the more mainstream brands.

This winter I bought a pair from Amazon. The brand is Whitin. They're a modest $45.I don't know if they're on par with Gucci. (Probably not.) Nevertheless, they're extremely comfortable and have lasted well so far. They're a zero drop, wide width shoe that looks cute. And trust me, that's a feat! Usually such shoes are pretty ugly and not at all stylish, to be frank. I am not someone who will easily or willing give up style to wear something that's considered healthier for the body. Finding these makes me really happy. :)

I have pretty fussy feet, so you'd think sneakers would be a safe, comfy bet, but nope. I really like the look of the retro pumas and addidas etc.. but they don't have enough foot support and are way too flat for my feet these days.

The chunkier athletic styles usually have more shock absorption and a rocker profile which feels comfy and supportive but it's not quite the refined profile I prefer. I will wear them anyways with more sportier outfits and for long walks.

I also have Ecco soft 7s which are fairly comfy and refined. They are a pure fashion sneaker but my new favourites are the my beige Skecher Bob's, good cushioning, fairly supportive with a rocker sole and I think they look nice too.

So basically I'm not really hip to the trendy, fancy designer brands. I just wear whatever makes my feet the happiest in a style I think works for my wardrobe.

It's all about the comfort for me, Carol!

Gucci, Adidas, Puma, Golden Goos, and Nike sneakers are uncomfortable on my feet. I've stopped trying them.

Occasionally, I can get Converse to work. My very old leather hi-tops work. See below. I love the look of Chucks!

I MUCH prefer the comfort of fashion sneakers like Ecco, Dolce Vita and Paul Green!

Here is my current sneaker collection. I don't have, or wear athletic sneakers.

I like both - depending on what I’m looking for , obviously ( like function or fashion or a combo of both ) . I don’t shop at the Gucci or GG level though . I’ve worn Dolce Vita shoes and sneakers for a few years and love the brand for me . No idea what or who Bzees is though . I have a good selection of sneakers in both categories and today and wearing white leather semi- platform ones by Eileen Fisher that are probably 10 years old .

ETA : I own everything from Vans ( 3 pair ) , Nike , Puma , ASICS, Adidas to Dolce Vita , Eileen Fischer , Sam Edelman , New Balance . I’m an equal opportunity shoe wearer

Angie's post today features two sneaker brands I don't think I've heard of. And I don't know about those two, but I know there are some brands that are well regarded for sneakers, but are more fashion brands, like Golden Goose or Sam Edelman.

I prefer classic brands like Adidas, Converse, Pumas, etc. because they are more associated with breakdancing, hip hop, skateboarding, youth angst, techno music...all the things I love. I have never owned any of these other brands.

Do you prefer one or the other? And I guess what I mean is--do you prefer pure sports lines of sneakers, or the fashion lines? Or both? What do you like or dislike about them?
