Not a fan, only partly because it makes it harder to tell what the actual item looks like.

But this is not new. They have been tinkering with photos almost as long as photos have existed. Retouching to make a waist smaller, etc.

For years, I have been seeing on a company's web site (and I think also in their catalogs) where clothing like a shirt or dress may be available and shown first in one color, then the photos altered to show it in several other colors. It did not seem to affect the diversity of the models (as before, some were white and some black) but they seem to have taken fewer pictures of them. So probably less money going to the models.

There was a recent article in our local news site (sadly I can’t link it as it is part of my Premium subscription that I pay for) about how the curve models are not getting as much work of late, mainly due to the Ozempic/Wegovy effect. One of the main models quoted is Isabella Moore, a NZ model who is also an opera singer, who has been previously successful as a curve model living in London. Work has been drying up.

There is a really interesting discussion I listened to once asking why women on social media, blogs, etc. don't look unique anymore. It was a really interesting, sad, and enlightening discussion. AI models are simply an extension of the latest homogenous beauty standards these days. I cannot tell you how many young women I see on social media who all are doing the "clean girl" look. They all look generically identical: extremely plump, nude glossy lips, very clean eye makeup, glowing skin, blown out hair. Perfect but homogenous. Beautiful yet I can't tell any of them apart as individuals. (I find it almost creepy, if I'm being honest.) And again, I see AI making this even more part of what we see.

While I don't like it, I see content creators using it that would otherwise not be able to find stock photos for their subject matter, or would never have the budget to afford real models. So, in order to make their content relevant, they use AI to do it. I've seen this specifically with a well known content creator in the season color space. I don't know how I feel about it, but I also understand why she is doing it.

Dee, I was chatting to hubs Greg about this yesterday - and I'm back to my first thought - why didn't AI do the right thing by making the models look diverse in every aspect like everyday people? That's the heart of the matter, IMO - to Jenni and Jaime's adjacent point. We were taking the right diverse steps with human models. Now this.

Also agree with Lisa and Echo. Social Media is going to implode because we don't know what's real and what's AI.

JENNI NZ, JAIME- You're right, many marketing campaigns have used unrealistic beauty standards to help create feelings of inadequacy or insecurity in order to convince us to buy their product. This use of AI just seems like another extension of that.

LISA- I agree that it is becoming extremely difficult to tell whether something is real or not. Perhaps there needs to be more strict regulations for labeling this sort of artificial content.

ECHO- Yes, maybe there will be some kind of backlash to it all at some point, but it seems right now many industries see the use of AI as an effective cost cutting tool to their bottom line.

This may be considered tangental, but there are two stores in my community that have gone almost entirely staff free with their automated check-out systems. When I first visited them, I found the environment extremely sterile and NOT a good shopping experience. Because I wanted an advertised discount and did not know how to make it happen with the automated system, I asked for assistance from a real person - and had a traditional cashier experience.

I have not returned to either of these stores, and have taken my business elsewhere.

I agree with Jaime, which is why I had to say I didn’t have a definite opinion. It follows the logic of using “perfected” models. I said I felt it’s the beauty standards that are at fault.
And despite feeling that I have stood against those standards to some extent over my life, I am still definitely affected by them, as witnessed by my sadness when I was thought to be much older than I am with my grey hair 2 years ago. And I look at an ad with a “pretty”model. How many of us can say we don’t do that? Maybe some of you are stronger than me in that regard.
I need to learn more about the environmental impact of AI, did not know about that.

I didn't realize ads were featuring AI models already! I know there's a big push across all industries to incorporate AI into anything and everything. I have no idea what this will mean for the future, except I'm left constantly questioning if anything I see or read is real anymore.

I am less concerned about people's body images, as the airbrushing and then the flat-out altering/photoshopping of images was doing essentially the same thing. The difference, of course, being that at least a real person was used as the basis for the artificial "doll" they created.

Likewise, the issue of representation isn't the fault of AI; it is a reflection (albeit a poor one) of a business's values (or lack thereof). As the article said, they can just as easily artificially create AI images of people of different etnnicities, abilities and sizes (they claim the technology isn't "there" yet regarding diverse body sizes, but I think it is more likely that no one has really tried).

I wonder how far things will go before there is a consumer backlash. I just think at some point the newest "trend" will become actually interacting with people instead of texting or social media, people wanting to create and consume actual human-created art, and wanting to see real people instead of artificially generated things. In other words, everything that's old eventually becomes new again.

On the other hand, people have their hair on fire over a thousand other legitimate issues right now, so that may take a while. Ultimately, I land on what a number of other people have mentioned: AI is a disaster regarding water usage, power drain, and quality of life for anyone in the area of a server farm. We have an energy (and water) crisis to begin with; this isn't where our priorities should be.

This is a very complicated topic to my mind. On a visceral level I am somewhat horrified by the replacement of real models with AI ones, but it does seem to follow the logic of using perfected models - whether through surgery or photo editing or probably both. That is the heart of the problem rather than AI itself I think.
The environmental costs of AI in general is a whole other topic. It is terrifying.

Interesting to read that article Dee, thank you. I had read about the career of Sara Ziff who is mentioned in the article previously, and been impressed by her. I heard the controversy about the Guess ad on our radio when driving one day.
I don’t think I have a definite opinion. I am and have always been concerned about “beauty standards” ever since I was 30, reading Naomi Wolf’s book “The Beauty Myth”. That was 1991, things got worse, then maybe a little better for a while using more diverse models, now maybe worse again…

I can see how this could be problematic...but only could be. One of the best things about art, including fashion, is the constant push forward for new images, new aesthetics, including beauty. The AI-generated people I have seen for such uses so far are very idealized, and that would get boring. I am not a stalwart just because, but because I prefer real people with all their differences.

Brooke Shields' eyebrows were not ideal, but became iconic! Lauren Hutton magnetized photographers with her gap teeth. And such.

Generally, I think that AI is absolutely mind blowingly incredible when used to complement - (not replace) - the expertise, skill sets, and specialties in certain fields. It benefits us all!

Specifically, using AI to create the types of images of models shown in the article - it's awfully artificial, off-putting, and a BIG step back to making fashion and style more diverse, real, and relatable.

ETA:

Why don't they use AI to create models that look more like a set of regular and diverse set of people? This feels like going back to Renaissance times when artists painted ideal versions of their subjects. Not what their subjects really looked like.

As an artist, I don’t like it. I don’t like the aesthetics of a lot of AI-generated imagery, and I also dislike the way it undermines the careers of artists of all kinds. It’s already hard enough to make a living out of writing, photographing, acting, etc, and now here we are seeing companies screw artists and models out of paying gigs. And that’s without even getting into the ethics of what reliance on this technology may be doing to our environment…
