I agree with cat2 as usual. My approach is slightly different, I keep a number of clothes that I have really adored and wear them again (sometimes after decades) when they trend again. The prime example is the 1988 pink Thai silk blouse. Worn to weddings in 2013 and 2023.

I like your items, Carla! Especially the bag. That's so great you found it at a thrift store! I just bought a burgundy bag (added below), but not necessarily because it's trending, as I've had it on my list for some time now because I think it's so versatile as a neutral and will complement many outfits.

I don't think I'm ahead of the curve as I am very classic in my style so there are many things in my wardrobe that I've had for a long time that are now "trending" mostly in the "trendy" colours: burgundy (and burgundy footwear), red, chocolate brown, grey, and leopard. These colours tend to be "fall" colours every season, though.

Suz, you have my red J.Crew pants in navy - I'm wearing the red now! - so there is your first pair of cigarette pants :)

Irina, agreed! Leopard print in browns and blacks are a classic. When classics have an on trend moment it's fab because it glorifies older items. Can only be good, IMO.

Yesterday, I received the sandals I have been considering all spring and summer and ordered after noticing that Amazon had them on sale. Today, I decided to google and find out if they are in style. Sure enough, Glamour reports that fisherman sandals have replaced oxfords as the go to early fall shoe. They are super comfortable out of the box and I'm wearing them again today after trying them out yesterday.

I have another example - I've always had a pair of leopard shoes in my mostly black shoe collection. Does it put me ahead of a curve? It is classic to me. This year leopard in trending. It doesn't make me feel more trendy. I just happy there are more choices in retail for leopard print as I have to replace a pair of beloved flats. Last year it was red color (I bought my red shoes a few years before this trend), next year will be something else.

I don’t closet purge as trends tend to be cyclical. I just wait until the next time something in my closet is trending and pull it out. I always style it differently, as a few years have passed and it has a different supporting act. I am currently wearing old silk scarf print blouses with this year’s denim skirt and cream jeans. And am about to pull out some old classic fit blazers now that oversized blazers finally seem to be in our tail lights.

I seriously doubt I’m ahead of any curve, but I did start wearing longer shorts two years ago. They’re just Bermuda shorts. It was so hot this summer that all of my shorts got lots of wear.

I don't know that I am really ahead of the curve...well it depends who is on the curve. I feel like I am current enough, but not a true early adopter.

Love your pieces Carla!

If you really identify with a trend and can find the right piece early it can be a great idea to get in ahead, because you can get lots of wear. I think Cocolion had this approach.

Mary Janes have been having a fashion moment, but I’ve always loved and worn them. Had a pair I wore to walk many a trade show and convention floor — and that’s a lot of walking. Those were retired when I did, but I still have a pair of Mary Jane flats that I wear from time to time.

Oooh, I love cigarette pants. I'm going to have to stock up on a few pair! I still have my BF jeans. And a couple of tapered trousers. But I could use a refresh on those if they are going to trend soon, since they are a style I truly enjoy.

Well done - love your fab additions ( wide cuffed jeans are to die for - I'm still looking )!
I've collected nice variety of wide leg jeans in slightly cropped length and added recently full length ones. The most fun was buying relaxed straight jeans with subtle snake print ( low rise - big thing for me ) - working on building outfits for fall.

Yay! One of the main reasons I enjoy reading trend reports, or looking at runway shows for that matter, is to see how many of the trends I already own . And, if I may say so, it is usually most of them. Oh the bubble skirts I could show .

I bought tapered leg jeans last year and added 2 second hand pairs in exactly the same style this year. Apparently, they are trending but I bought them because I’m into this style at the moment.
6 years ago I bought a slightly cropped, boxy silk top and I wear it every summer. Some years it was not trendy, others it was more current. I wore it with straight cropped pants in 2018, I wear it with wide leg pants now.

You're right -- it's always fun to be ahead of the curve, and it means you get a lot of wear out of your clothes over time.

I just bought a pair of buckled boots -- and only afterwards noticed this article about fall's best boots in the New York Times. I haven't had a moto-type boot for. while, so that was fun to see.

Like Angie, the part of my wardrobe that's usually ahead of or just in time for the trends is bottoms. I've been wearing wide legs and wide leg crops since...2016! (The first wide crops were not popular here on the forum but I loved them...and never looked back. That first pair were snugger on the thighs than subsequent pairs. They just kept getting better, in my view.)

Gorgeous color on the bag, it'll be lovely with fall and winter outfits and all the rich colors of those seasons. How fun you had a trend item before it became a trend.

I've jumped into cropped wide leg jeans and haven't looked back. Same for cropped straight leg pants/jeans. Cropped styles for bottoms are wonderful for my short self, because they fit me full length (or close to full length), and I don't have to get them hemmed. Along with shorter length in the legs, I've noticed my jeans/pants got higher in the rise too. I used to wear my tops untucked, all the time, even with high rise bottoms. But more recently I started to half tuck/semi tuck my tops and this let's me pair the look with belts, which I've been enjoying. For jogger style bottoms, I've also been tucking the tees, so you can see the fun drawstring detail.

NICE, Carla :)

Body con tops are AS on trend as very roomy ones! Yes to the fitted mesh. Wearing a fitted mesh top now, actually!

An example to answer your question:

I am ahead of the curve with bottoms! I got my first pair of roomy cuffed jeans, barrel jeans, and pleated pants in 2018 and 2019, before the pandemic. I stopped wearing skinnies before that, and threw in wide crops. I went VERY wide a few years ago too. Looking at which bottoms fringe trends are next.... ;)

I style these bottoms with all fits of top - body con, tailored, fluid, and oversized. Add classic elements to the outfits to ground the looks. Signature pearls and non-neutral specs, of course!

I love it when that happens!

In 2022 I thrifted a merlot leather Coach cross body that I’ve used off and on. Since spring it’s been my preferred ‘dressy’ bag (when I’m not carrying the Uniqlo soft half moon bag). I’m still ‘feeling’ the merlot bag going into fall - and it seems to be on all the ‘what’s trending’ lists at the moment.

It’s hot, and I’m still wearing shorts - but I’m starting to think about how I’ll be styling my closet for F/W - so reading up on what’s of-the-moment. I wonder what else I have that’s current or can be styled in current ways? Possibly the wide leg jeans and mesh T? Thinking of different ways to style them. I’ve doubled up the strap on the bag so it’s more like a handle or shoulder bag, and I’m thinking of wearing the jeans without the cuff, so that they are long and foot covering.

What of-the-moment elements of style do you currently own - acquired a while ago or more recently? Are you wearing them differently now than you did then?
