I'm going to chime back in here because I think both the yays and nays have valid points, but, ultimately, I think no one ought to feel that she is doing something wrong whichever choice is made.

Like some of the other forum members, I'm old enough to remember when going without hosiery in public, except in the most casual of circumstances, was totally frowned upon. Then the next generation of young women told their mothers it made no sense to wear sleeveless sundresses and strappy sandals with hose in the warm summer months--and they were right! Hose was hot, uncomfortable, and totally unnecessary. The catch was your toes had to be manicured and polished, but that seemed a reasonable trade-off especially since mani/pedi places were popping up all over.

But there was a catch for older women. As you age, it's harder to keep the skin on your legs smooth and supple, and wearing shoes sans hose often led to painful blisters and raw spots when walking. Some of us began to long for our hose on certain occasions. Wearing tights was OK in colder weather but sometimes we just wanted the look of pretty, polished legs under a party dress. And, for some of us, fishnets just couldn't shake their less savoury connotations.

Then Ms. Middleton showed her shimmery legs in public and those of us who always had kept our love of hose as a part of a dressy look felt a bit better about giving our opinions about the merits of hose for certain occasions for some of us. If a youthful fashion blogger can be "edgy" when she wears ankle socks with pumps, or black tights with white sandals, why did I need to feel bad about wearing a pair of sheer hose to make my legs look like they did a few decades ago?

Here's the deal--I won't wrinkle my nose at the ripped and torn jeans you are wearing to the party, if you don't turn your nose up at the nude, sheer hose I'm sporting with my pretty dress and shoes. Let's both of just enjoy wearing what pleases us and makes us happy. End of my rant.

It is a bit of a personal preference, we all have certain memories that we relate to certain combinations. I must admit I don't like dark hose with lighter shoes, but Angie wore that very combination in her recent outfit post and really rocked it. Like DonnaF I have always thought of hose and sandals as a bit "old lady" and thought of sheer hose as old fashioned.

However it is interesting to see how attitudes have changed recently and hose are becoming very popular since the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) is always seen wearing them.

I am old enough to feel that a dressy look is not quite *finished* without the subtly sheer gloss of hose. My preference is not too much open toe with hose unless those hose are tights -- and then with tights it can look seasonally confused. But sheers with open toes can look a bit *old lady* to me, despite sentence #1! I have Reynaud's phenomena in my toes, so I have learned to avoid open toes anyway since they always run cold and I don't want any amputations!

Maybe I'm OCD, but I can't stand seeing the toe or the heel covered by hosiery when wearing an open shoe. Unless it is a very small peep toe, or something very subtle. If the hosiery is totally unnoticeable, it could pass on the back of the heel, but still not the toe. Sorry, that's just me.

Something like this shoe from Clarks would be "ok" with hosiery because of the strap on the back and the toe hole is very small...

I agree with following your own muse--just noting that there are many rules so if you are rule-oriented, beware.

I recall the Hanes or whatever adds showing people in hose + sandals.
Honestly, when you're talking about a very dressy event with dressy shoes, I don't think most people's toes look all that less creepy, or more attractive, wiggling all about, or peeping out from a formal gown, than when encapsulated in sheer-toed sheer hose.

Gryffin, Patrick Duffy! I loved that show!
I think that, so long as there isn't any industrial strength seaming, or reinforced toe-age going on, that hoisery with open toed shoes is fine.

Totally agree with Gaylene. Do what makes you comfortable. Just no toe seams please!! I personally do wear tights with peeptoe shoes and I've worn sheers with evening sandals with a gown. Diana - you crack me up. Creepy toes and webbed feet!! Does anyone remember a TV show "The Man from Atlantis" or do I totally date myself!! I prefer opaques too but hey just call me "Quack!!"

Depends whose rules you want to follow. Like most "Is it OK to..." questions different people have different ideas. Personally, I think all these "rules" are about individual preferences and not some universal "fashion faux pas". If it seems sensible, and looks good to you, then do it.

Personally, I only like it if the hosiery is completely opaque. The reason being that I think the sight of toes viewed through sheer hosiery is really creepy looking! It looks like you have webbed feet to me.

I noticed Angie only discussed certain types of "open" situations--not full-open toed sandals, for example--mostly open back or small peep-toe.
