I am ridiculously attached to my books. And I've even tracked down some childhood books that were lost along the way. So I feel your pain and wish you a speedy recovery.

:( Hoping you'll find them again someday! At least you have your remaining collection and learned from this....that's very important Good luck!

I'm sorry, Irene. I am attached to my books too! I'm even loath to loan them to friends unless I know for sure they will treat them nicely and return them. Pretty much the only ones that I have given away are the few rare ones that I absolutely despise or that actively made me angry for one reason or another.

The only time I regret my book collection is when I have to move it! (But they are at least easy to pack.)

I love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by the way!

Awww, Irene, I'm so sorry. (A is for Alibi is by Sue Grafton and I love her books. I don't have that one in my collection). I do give books away but so far haven't let go of any that I miss. I'm probably a bit too cautious in this area.

You know when you do something and you start regretting it the moment you just did so?

I've done something horrible today: I gave five of my books away. For almost nothing.

The thing is, there is this second-hand books in English store in Barcelona. It's the only place that does this here. And supposedly they take your old books and give you new ones. Only that they really don't. They decide that your books are worth almost nothing (5 books = 2.75€). Then they will charge new purchasers around 4€ per books.

To make it even worse, I got two books in a much worse state (though probably better quality literature-wise) and had to add 3€. Go figure.

I feel like an idiot for letting go of my books, even if I didn't like them that much. They were still mine! There is a reason why I don't love libraries: you can't keep the books forever. It should have given me a clue as to how I would feel about this... I'm NEVER doing this again. EVER.

FWIW, the books I gave away were:

Two Sookie Stackhouse books (#1 and #2): I didn't even finish with #2 so at the time it made sense.
A walk to remember - Nicholas Sparks
Message in a bottle - Sparks
A is for Alibi (too lazy to look for the author, sorry!)

I'm missing them already...

Have you ever felt like this? Oh, and have you ever given any of your books away?

*Grieving while reading new old copy of A tree grows in Brooklyn* - which so far is a very beautifully written novel
