That's another way of approaching it: taking advantage of super sales to add something unique or fun to your wardrobe, something you maybe wouldn't have purchased at full price. I often use second hand clothing shops as my "experiment" place.

It depends on the item, but if I were going to save it for later, it would probably be a HEWI or niche item. My silk black trench dress, which I bought during last year’s holiday sale, didn’t make an appearance for many months, but I still love it as much as the day I purchased it. My approach of late has been that if I’m not going to wear the item now, I’d rather save my money.

These are really interesting perpsectives from all of you. Like @unfrumped I'm trying to build a quality wardrobe with a limited budget, and yet like some of you I get psychologically tired of watching items and waiting for sales. I've sometimes wondered what would happen if for one year I ignored the sales and only bought what I really need at the time I need it...even though I wouldn't be able to buy very much. Those 60% and 70% discounts really stretch your dollar...but I'm not experienced enough to predict winners every time...

Generally, I have found that, unless the item is a HEWI and has been nearly impossible for me to find, it's better not to buy the item, because my tastes invariably change by the time I can wear the item. Trends are continually changing, and what I want now might not be what I want later. As Isabel pointed out, even with classics, sometimes I want something slightly different when the time comes to wear my previous purchase. One of the things I have really worked on this past year is not to buy anything that I can't wear right now, because I have not had good luck with it in the past.

I don't buy in advance, not even "classics" because sometimes the interpretation of a classic is just not the version I want later.

I used to shop sales and buy things ahead of time. Now I don't. Too often by the time I can wear them, the joy is gone. I am no longer interested, life style may have changed, or I have moved on. Once in a very rare while, I find something that I really love, love enough to wait. But sales can cause wardrobe bloat, so I usually avoid the end of season ones now.

Sometimes I do. It depends on what's available and what I need.

I have sometimes bought items 2 or 3 months before I need them. Examples: winter coats, winter boots, swimwear, and outfits for special events. I am surprised to hear that the nice boots you are considering to buy will not be used in one YEAR.

I do look for wardrobe basics and essentials on sale, and stock up. For other items, I tend to buy at the beginning of the season, and wear often. It sounds like these boots might be close to an essential for you, in which case I’d go ahead and get them. That heel height is super hard to find. I’ve been looking for similar boots, in black, with a leather lining, for two years. I can honestly say that I’d get them, even if I finally found the right pair in April, at an end-of-season sale.

I used to do this to excess and had varying success. I always try to get on sale so I do tend to shop out of the wearing season for an item. I have learned only to buy basic things that I know won't be out of style or if it's a trendy piece it has to be REALLY inexpensive so I don't kick myself if I change my mind about it once it's time to wear. I do stock up on shoes in brands I know (and if I'm duplicating a favorite) and styles that are timeless when there is a really good deal.
It is more fun to buy and wear right away, but there is that moment at the beginning of next season where I unpack my new items and am surprised and pleased.

If you wear your current tan boots daily, I would get these and then trade off between the boots. Each pair will then last longer since each has had a chance to air out between wears.

Hi Mel, sometimes I do, and buying at the end of a season can work really well price-wise if I love the item, especially end-of-summer pretty tops. In NZ a lot of our clothing is very expensive for good quality brands. If it's good colours for me, I would buy it then and not care it was "last season's" because I would be likely to wear it for several years. I would do that if the style was not too closely associated with a particular year- eg, I've not got into cold-shoulder tops at all, I feel they will date quickly.
Having said that, this year I'm resisting because I'm trying to reduce the size of my wardrobe and would rather reassess at the start of the next season than buy late and wait.
I'm with you about trying to get good wear from my items and that new things can displace older ones. I'm definitely on "Team Wear" and if buying during a season, like you are halfway through your winter, I would be wanting to wear the boots right away! But if you have sufficient willpower to keep them aside until next winter, all power to you. They look a great pair and a good bargain if you have room to store them.

I do visit the Post Christmas sales. I’ll buy a few things sometimes. And I do like to check the stores out at the very end of January for the giant markdowns, lol. It really all depends what goodies I find, if they’ll be saved for the next year. But I live in the San Francisco Bay Area... We have the phrase ‘June Gloom’ - one only has to wait 6 months before ‘second winter’ hits... lol.

Are they perfect, and how long have you wanted this particular colour and style? Do you have a bag and coat to match?

If you’ve wanted this style for a while, in this colour, and you have the accompanying accessories, I would go for it.

I personally don’t stock up at Christmas because I feel spent!

I used to stock up at other times of the year, but psychologically, it’s easier to buy at the beginning of the season. It means I don’t always have to be on the hunt for this and that. If it means I miss out on things: so be it. I’ll live I don’t really like constantly shopping.

Oh fashion items? No. It gets worn right now, or not bought if it's not filling an immediate hole. On gear/basics? Yes. I also feel spent at this time of year - literally, and figuratively - and operate under the theory that if I like something enough to buy it, I'll do so at full price . Just because it's on sale - it doesn't magically become more appealing.

I definitely take advantage of sales to buy things ahead of time and off-season, though I don't think I've ever bought something thinking I would only wear it a full year later. Is it because of the weather where you live? These boots are absolutely gorgeous and classic and I could see them going with outfits from Fall to Spring. And such luscious real leather for under $100 seems too good to pass. If this is something you've been wanting for a while, I'd say go for it, and perhaps you'll end up wearing sooner than you think?

There are certain things that I have always loved, that I know I am always going to wear, even if they're going to sit in my closet for nine months before the weather cycles back around.

Boots are perpetually one of those things - I wear them almost exclusively from mid-November to early March. If I find a pair of knee high or OTK boots on sale in March or April, I'll buy them and look forward to wearing them when the temperature drops.

I also do this with vintage coats and leather jackets. I have a vintage Neiman Marcus cashmere coat that I bought online in May for $20, and a vintage Saks camel-hair coat that I thrifted in August. I had them dry-cleaned and was very excited to bring them out when it finally got cold in late November.

Great question because I’ve been having trouble being sure of fits a year in advance— fussy feet- or even some style preferences.
But, as a practical matter, buying excellent classic items at end of season sales is often the only way to build a quality wardrobe at affordable cost. Think winter coats, boots, cashmere sweaters.
I think if one is buying from one’s “ list” and color palette and excellent fit, and not with sales goggles , weird items or over- buying ( e.g., save some room and budget for style shifts during the year, wild cards, etc) then it should work great.
Because, the flip side can be, if I only buy “ in season “, I honestly don’t always find the item until mid- season or later and have missed lots of wears meanwhile. So there’s a lot to be said for being sd to pull out your boots at the first sign of boot- weather.

Your question is a little bit different. Do I buy things ahead of when I will actually use it? I do this as well with varying success. Sometimes it is the best decision possible. Other times not so much.

Totally agree, Perfect is hard to come by. you have to buy when the price is right and what you want comes your way. this is the only way when you know the items will work long term, like classic and things that probably will look current next season. I just found a perfect pair of dressy booties on sale that I may not get much of a chance to wear this winter. They will replace my heeled pumps that all became too stretched out to stay on my feet. so tis won't happen again I decided to try dressy booties instead.

Those are lovely boots and you still have a few month this season to wear them.

What a nice pair of boots!
Yes, I sometimes buy items ahead of time. Mostly simple, basic things which are perfect and not always easy to find at a right price. For two years ago, I stocked up black sweaters, which had perfect proportions for my figure. I bought first one and later, when I realized how good it was, I bought two more (then on sale). I saved one of them for next winter. I never regretted it, because the model did not come back.

I agree with Cindysmith, the boots are classic. I think there is no risk that they would go out of style next winter. If the price is right, I would say why not...

I actually used to excel at this. I'd go to the big sales and stock up on last-season stuff for the next year. It saved me a lot of money. Lately, I dont live near any good shopping (seriously, over an hour to the Dallas metroplex area), so ive been having to rely on the internet (which doesnt always have as prices as good as the same items in brick h mortar stores)

I agree that the boots you have picked are a classic and won't ever look "out of style", even if they aren't "trendy". You could buy them now while the price is right, and put them in a holding zone (in the box) until you wear out the boots they'll be replacing. It's entirely possible that you wont find something as exactly right and at such a good price a year from now.

It's that time of year again when the retailers tempt us with the after-Christmas sales...
I'm thinking of whether or not to buy this fabulous pair of boots. They're everything I've been looking for: tan color, real leather, comfort, perfect heel height, and under $100.
However, I don't need to use them right away and may keep them in my closet for a year before pulling them out. I like to force myself to get as much wear as possible out of my items and I know that a new item has a way of dethroning the old one very quickly.
I've done this before, buying ahead of time. Sometimes it's a great idea, but other times my style preferences and needs have meanwhile evolved, and so the item I bought a year ago is no longer going to work for me. A waste of money. However, I might splurge this time because these boots are classic and I can't imagine myself not wearing them at all. Also, it hasn't been easy to find a pair like this with the perfect heel height. Sometimes you have to buy things when they come your way and not when you want them to come to you...
Do any of you buy things "ahead of time"? Does it work out for you?
