I'm with Joy in how I deal with this. I have too many pieces in my summer closet right now - I was *alerted* to this fact after Jussie's terrific thread on how many is too much etc- and will be doing a weed-out this weekend. In the last 2 years, I have been buying more pieces of just middling quality (for financial reasons more than anything ) and they aren't holding up. Look horrible after laundering, don't fit perfectly, fabrics are just so-so etc etc , and I'm not happy with a lot of my tops because of this. I have no guilt in donating things I don't wear anymore, but only pieces that are in good condition.

I said good bye to my pink coat today. A handed down one, probably 100s of wears by me, since I had it five years. I found it in my mouldy part of our old car with its own mould collection.
It was getting a bit worn out and the hems had dropped, but probably would not have actually thrown out otherwise.

I have a strict no-growth policy, which is great when shopping because if I love it and it follows me home or arrives at my front door, something will need to go!

Most recently, a pair of EF booties that were just too high-heeled for my fussy back any more were donated to make room for my DV Top Picks!

Weeping that you had to let those incredibly cool shoes go!!!!

I haven't passed anything on very recently but will do so quite soon when I begin packing for our move. Some of those items will undoubtedly have seen fewer than 30 wears, but those will be balanced by items that have seen far more wears than that. Last year I passed along a skirt that had only had 4 wears. It just didn't feel right. I gave it to my stepdaughter, though, so it will go on to have a better life with her.

I just lost my favorite Massimo Dutti silk shirt after 5 years. It went in the washer and dryer every week and finally hit the bullit. I pass on most of my "wearable" items to my housekeeper who gives them to her church. (Or her high school daughter, lol)

I very sadly said goodbye to my Paige Porter BF jeans. Paige no longer makes this style of jean and I spent months replacing them. I wore the jeans many many times. I don't keep count but I got my money out of them.
I also donated 3 J. Crew long-sleeved T-shirts. I was never happy with these but put up with them because well because. They were looking very misshapen and worn out.
I am looking at my Trippin boots (sob, sob, sob) and wondering if I should sell them. My feet are so beyond anything interesting these days.

A favourite sweater has died on me. It is pulled, has holes and is misshapen. Logically, I am glad to throw it away because it is worn out. However, it feels like saying goodbye to an old friend. I demoted a Uniqlo cashmere sweater to my house sweater and bought a new sweater to be my good cosy sweater.

I have in my holding zone a number of items that are in good condition. However because I can donate them to goodwill and know that they will be useful to others, it makes me happy to let them go.

I just bagged up all of my "meh" clothes that were for my job at the fruit stand. I have stashed the bag in my holding zone (the bag seat of my truck). I also just passed a bunch of shoes on to goodwill because of my recent foot problems.

Most of my clothes last about 3 years in regular rotation, then usually get passed on during the fourth season. They rarely wear out, but I avoid knits for the most part. It is often that they just seem same old same old. A weight difference of 2 or 3 pounds means clothing fits differently. That can be a reason to get rid of something. More often I want a different style like jeans with a higher rise or tops that are longer. Right now I am ready to get rid of a bunch of tops that feel a bit tight or short and predict that some sweaters will go due to pilling or too chunky. Over all, I am happy with my wardrobe and used NAS to replace rather than add additional.

Thirty wears is a super goal. I am awed that you have achieved this and have actually worn out clothes. The only items that I have that count having been loved too much are linen tshirts that tend to have a short lifespan since I have only two at a time (one white, one navy) that I enjoy wearing.

Given the size of my wardrobe, which is much smaller than it used to be, and four distinct seasons, i rarely wear out non-loungewear--i.e. anything that I would be willing to wear outside the house. If i can get 15 wears out of an item, I consider it a roaring success. There are exceptions. My one pair of AG black super skinnies that i wear whenever i need a black pant, more than 30 wears. My lands end and north face puffers which i wear exclusively during the winter, 3 winters and counting.

I have in my donation pile

- a tweed suit that I have owned since 2000. The coat is just too tight on my shoulders now I go to the gym. The skirt fits well but I think they are a lovely pair so I will donate them both.
- a blue merino tunic (sleeveless). I bought it about four years ago and it is warm and cosy. It is flattering worn with leggings or smooth ponte pants....BUT....it needs a layer under as it has no sleeves, and worn with jeans the dome and waistband show through....and the cobalt blue is just not the best for combining with my current wardrobe. It does not meet my style direction and does not quite feel like me.
- I might consign some black ankle boots - they are not my style - but they are practical and comfortable and well made and in good condition. I am just not sure what to do. They are four-five years old.

On my almost worn out list - all have been absolute workhorses except for the first pink tee.
- pink long sleeve tee with mark on it (worn as underlayer only)- estimate 15 wears.
- black and white stripe tee ( small stain) - estimate 30 wears
- two tired black tank tops - have been absolute workhorses for three to four years all year - estimate 60 plus wears
- pewter hi tops (three years old-I plan to retire at end of winter sports season) - estimate 60 plus wears
- cognac sandal boots (four years old - very tired and on last legs) - estimate 80 plus wears
- lilac cork sandals wedges (about to throw out after six years - worn beyond repair) - estimate 80 plus wears

The tops will become rags as they are unfit to donate The shoes will be discarded as they are also unfit to donate.

Replacing the striped tee, black tanks and sandals are my top summer spending priorities.......

It is a shame about your shoes but I am pleased you could consign them.

A pair of white cropped jeans got donated due to a 'polterwang' issue I noticed after some WIW photos. There seems to be a flaw in the fabric high on the leg on one side. I promoted another pair that I hacked. I hadn't been wearing them much because though full length, the inseam was short. I've worn them 3 days in a row since hacking them and love the fit and feel of them. 'New' favourites.

I also trashed 2 pairs of my favourite Hanna Highrise jeans from MWWH. Got them before the move, so they are more than 4 years old. Hundreds of wears. Very faded and the bums were ready to give out. Also some ancient gear and a pair of running shoes.

My terry bathrobe has been in and out of the donation bag. Currently it is hanging in my closet. Need to find a replacement before I pass it along.

I have been on a shopping break during the month of July and may continue for August. I just can't wrap my head around F/W when the weather is a sunny 30deg C!

Hah, Jenn, these are shoes I bought *while* pregnant. My feet were miserable, which precipitated the shift to mostly minimalist and zero-drop footwear. I spent the first trimester backpacking and went up half a size then, but haven't fluctuated since.

It saves you time, while your tees still get an extended life. I never demote my clothing to rags, simply because we cycle through kitchen towels for that. We use plain sackcloth towels for everything in our kitchen, and cut them up for rags when they get too stained or worn.

What a bummer that the Sevilla Smiths did not work out. I am still thinking about a pair of their boots, but I was always hesitant about the flats as I often have that problem with heels loosening up (I have a pair of cheap cotton espadrilles that are doing this, but I haven't quite convinced myself to get rid of them yet -- they are useful, otherwise comfortable, and I like the colour!).

This summer, I finally tossed a couple pairs of grungy shoes that predate DS -- my oldest trail runners and these mustard yellow flats. Both had already been demoted to yard/garden work, but then they had a nasty run-in with a bucket of compost tea (dangers of gardening with preschoolers...). I demoted a slightly ratty striped t-shirt and an old jersey maxi skirt to the position of "beach cover-up" since the dress I used to use as a beach cover-up is long gone. I also cut the maxi skirt off so that it's more of a midi length now, which breathed some new life into it. I also consigned a pair of mid-rise yoga tights that never quite fit me properly.

Four or five years ago, I bought 4 Uniqlo tees and 4 Gap tees that were perfect. (I bought one of each originally, then duplicated a bunch when I realized they were ideal.) I've worn them countless times since then. Always washed cold and line dried to keep them alive.

I knew it was time to replace them (faded, some with tiny pin-sized holes), so I've been stocking up on other (inferior) tees, but I couldn't let them go. Then finally, I wore a few of them to a campout with friends, and various minor disasters befell them: zinc sunscreen stains, holes, etc. So I finally shifted all of them to my "play clothes" pile this month. I won't get rid of them until they really fall apart (at which point I'll use them as rags) but now they're only for dance class, rock climbing, etc. And now I'll just throw them in the warm laundry / dryer with underpants and other things I don't treat as carefully.

In the spirit of cindysmith's thank you notes, some wardrobe items I've let go recently. This is, ideally, what I'd like churn to look like in my wardrobe going forward, although I'm not there yet, and still find myself passing on a few items here and there after only a small amount of wear.

My Sevilla Smith flats were so cool, and I got so many compliments, but after exactly 30 wears, they felt loose on my feet and often slipped off my heel. When I tripped down the stairs with them and bruised myself badly, it was the last straw, and I sold them on eBay, still in good condition. It was great to recoup some of my investment, and I don't regret purchasing, even though, for me, this was a ridiculously small number of wears for a pair of shoes. I am pretty sure, based on the selling price, that they'll go on to a good second life.

Two striped tees (one shown) were sent to Goodwill after 30 and 33 wears respectively. One had multiple pinprick holes in it and the other was starting to pill, but also was just never quite right. My Goodwill accepts worn and damaged clothing, as they do fiber recycling in addition to retail sales. I replaced these with one Boden striped tee.

After 37 wears, my rust duster sweater is badly pilled and has a hole in the armpit. It's not really fit for public use anymore, but I'm keeping it for loungewear, because it's wonderfully cozy. I guess some would call this a demotion, but I'm considering it repurposing. :)

It took 74 wears for my favorite skinny jeans to tear across the thigh, but of course it happened while I was on vacation with a minimal amount of clothing. I wore something else for the flight home, and then donated the jeans for fiber recycling. I still haven't replaced them, but I'm hoping NAS yields something.

What have you passed on recently? How and when do you transition clothes out of your wardrobe?
