I would recommend not going with heavy, straight bangs for your first foray into it -- I also have wavy hair (which used to be thicker, more like yours looks), and IMHO, heavy bangs with wavy hair can be unruly and feel annoyingly heavy on the forehead. I'd try a lighter sideswept fringe. It's a fun, dramatic way to change up your look if you are open to the maintenance. They grow out from blunt to side swept to "sheepdog" pretty fast, at least with straight hair. This means an extra trip to the salon at least monthly. It's not as easy as hair without bangs. No more wash and wear if you have that now. I flat iron mine every day and i already have straight hair!
