Bijou, good point! Because some pools don’t like pre-conditioning (because of pool chemicals) I use something like Ultra Swim shampoo that’s formulated to take out the chemicals. Aubrey Organics was another good one. I can’t find them here, so I stock up when we go to the US.

Minaminu, how did people there handle no changing rooms? Here they just dropped trou poolside. Some tried to cover up with a towel or whatever as they changed, but I’ve seen so many bare butts (& fronts) this year, lol! Some did the same at the gym, which I can’t understand. Sweaty workout clothes are not going to create any health issues; hanging out in a wet swimsuit can give you a UTI, so I need to change. Not that Irina wants to head into Canadian winter in a wet base layer anyway.

I always use a Redken hair treatment on my hair under my swimming cap to prevent the chlorine drying out my hair. I found this article useful.

Post-Swim Hair: How to Make Sure Chlorine Doesn't Ruin It – Triathlete

In terms of bathers, make sure you can change out of them when wet. I was in a change room and was worried that I would need to be cut out of a swimsuit which was fine to remove when dry but almost dislocated my shoulder getting out of when wet. Since then, I prefer suits that zip up.

I'd also check what the swimming pool offers in terms of hair drying and if necessary I'd invest in a portable hairdryer.

Due to Covid, my swimming pool does not allow to use the changing rooms. You may want to check if they have any similar rules in place!

Goggles- I find I cannot swim any distance without them, whether in a pool or at the beach. I get eye indentations from wearing them, however, and have found Aquasphere swim masks are face-saver! They sit on the brow and cheekbones, so no more panda eyes.
I prefer swimming with a cap for any distance. I do love the feel of water through my hair but it is irritating to get hair in eye or mouth.

Must say I learned something today. I don’t really swim - just drown slowly, lol. But good to know about caps!

The pools I frequent prefer that folks wear a cap (even guys) because the accumulation of hair of any length can be hard on the filters and other pool maintenance equipment. That said, it isn’t mandatory. There are aqua fitness classes where the participants never get their hair wet! If you’re going to be doing lap swimming, you don’t want your hair in your face, so a cap is good. My hair is above shoulder length. I put it in a stubby pony tail, and a cap. I use a cap for long hair since it has a little more ease than a regular cap.

Many pools have a (limited) stock of caps and goggles for sale at the front desk, but Canadian Tire or Sport Check is a good bet (in Canada). You can get a Speedo silicone cap for long hair for $20-25, and a pair of Speedo Vanquisher goggles for $24-28 that will last you a year of more of swims (3 x week). There are cheaper and pricier versions, and other manufacturers (Arena, Tyr, Nike, etc.) as well, but for my money Speedo is the way to go! :-)

(Though I show black accessories (below) you can get them in colours, and the goggles tinted for sun protection if you swim out of doors or in a pool with a lot of glass.)

Good luck, and have fun!

Thank you, chewyspaghetti, Stagiaire, kkards!
I cut my hair to a shoulder length in September and I probably can just get a regular swimming cap. I’ll wait to decide on goggles.

I think what you “need” is kind of dependent on what kind of swimming you intend to do.
But yes to a good swim suit, goggles and a cap, and probably some ear plugs. there are caps designed specially for long hair. You might needed to buy a couple of different goggles and caps to find the ones that work best for you.

(I’ve always had a soft spot for this one, in my youth, it was the swim cap of choice for the older ladies)

I second the goggles Rec. Even if pool chemicals don’t bother you, goggles let you see your stroke so much better. I don’t think most pools require cape anymore, but with your longer hair, I think you want one. The cap won’t keep it dry—you’ll have to wash your hair afterwards—but it will keep it out of the way.

ETA on sizes of caps--I have large ones purchased for my son and me for an event that would have required them. It was cancelled and we've ever used the caps. He doesn't come swim when I do my workouts; I wear a regular cap then, or sometimes just comb it into a ponytail with an uncoated rubber band. It sounds like some ends would come out of yours and be in your way. My guess is that a regular cap would work for your shoulder length straight hair.
