Ah yes, the bag. N'thing the little cross body bag for valuables with hands free. When outdoors it's also handy carry one of those cheap canvas totes to stow jacket, water bottle, sunblock and any festival swag you may pick up along the way.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart. Having gone to, truthfully, hundreds and hundreds of concerts in all types of venues over the course of my many years (the first was the Beatles), I'd say there is just no way you can go wrong as long as you stick to fairly inconspicuous casual. You don't want to pick up on the performer's style unless you are a super-fan and really young. Otherwise, the goal is to get the rest of the audience to ignore you.

I am headed off to the U2 concerts in Montreal this weekend. Packing comfortable jeans and tees. I prefer to get close to the bands I go to see, as my eyes aren't all that sharp -- and, since it's live, I like to watch the people, not the screens. So, I prefer general admission, standing. When it's a superstar band like U2 playing, this usually means one has to stand in line for hours before admission and also stand throughout the show and while waiting to exit the venue. That calls for comfortable shoes, preferably ones that can be stepped (or pogo'd) upon without too much pain. It also helps to wear a platform or a thick heel to give you a little height advantage. While waiting outside, you do need to be prepared for the weather.

Now I realize that basically I am just seconding everything that Janet said! And the little cross-body bag is an idea I use, too, for the reasons Janet cites. Plus, it takes less time for security to search it, so you get into the venue faster.

I always find I'm hot at indoor shows, due to the volume of people in one small place. Outdoor that might not be as much of a factor, but I'd still go with layers that can be easily shed and donned, and a crossbody bag you can easily keep with you.

I've never seen Lucinda Williams, but that should be excellent. I saw Florence & the Machine opening for U2 a few years ago -- great show! That was outdoors (in a big stadium) and it was HOT. I wore a lightweight dress just because it was the coolest thing I could come up with. So I'd agree with approprio and consider the weather before anything else.

Really, I feel like almost anything goes for concerts. I have shown up to shows in the clothes I wore to work, and in jeans and tees, and dressed up for the occasion… it all depends on the artist and the venue (is it arctic air-conditioned?, are there seats?), and my mood. If you think you might need a jacket of some sort, I try to keep it as lightweight as possible so that if I have to carry it, it's not heavy or uncomfortable to hold. If I carry a purse, I'll often make it a small cross body bag if the show is not a seated venue. That leaves hands free for drink/and or applause. Also, if it's a standing venue, I like to wear shoes that are very comfortable but have at least a little heel to them -- the Ash wedge sneakers for example -- because they give me a little extra height to see above the crowd.

I go to loads of concerts. Our concert-going audience tends to be quite laid back and more interested in watching the show than each other, but I've noticed in other countries people make more of en effort.

Indoors more or less anything goes, so I dress as for any other casual evening out. Outdoors is trickier though. I have a few rules for these, based on our northern European weather. Your mileage may vary.

I always check the weather forecast and pack a waterproof and rain hat if need be, because you can't use an umbrella in an audience crowd. I usually go with a lightweight rain jacket.

If it's sunny, don't forget your sunhat and sunblock, because there'll be nowhere to hide.

Wear sensible shoes. No heels. Sneakers are fine, but I'm happier in a pair of thick-soled oxfords. I've also worn rain boots in the past, but they were good ones.

For an all day event or festival, my secret weapon is sheer support hose (hence the oxfords). I wear them under a tube skirt or midi (I feel a bit old for shorts these days) and they never fail to keep me dancing well into the night.

I saw Florence and the Machine several years ago and wore a teal patterned maxi dress, flat sandals, and a lightweight sweater. It was an outdoor venue and I was very comfortable. I was also very pregnant so jeans weren't an option for me, but many others were in casual jeans, pretty tank tops, with a topper.

Hope you have a fabulous time!

Outdoor ones are very casual! To Billy Joel last week, I wore an almost sheer tunic over capris and brought a sweater (which I did wear) and floral tennis shoes, but then again I live in a beach community. Other times I wear a maxi skirt and flat sandals.

Where are our concert goers? I think Old Chic was hitting some U2 shows and Janet seems to see shows fairly regularly, though maybe in smaller venues if I remember right.

I would say check the weather first, sadly I don't know what the temps will be there, but layers seem like a decent idea. No leather if there's a chance of rain on the outdoor one, though!

Also it depends if it is general admission or if you have an assigned place (seat). Will you be on a lawn? Will you have a seat? Is it covered or truly outdoors? I would opt for no heel, but that's my aging self talking :)

same q's for the inside one - seating or standing?

I have not been to a concert in several years. And now I'm off to two this month. I am taking my daughter to Florence and the Machine (outdoor venue in Boston) tomorrow and then in ten days I'm going to see Lucinda Williams (indoor small theater in NH.)

Anyone have any suggestions, particularly for Florence? I am thinking I should bring a moto jacket and not wear shoes with much of a heel, but what else? Florence is of course a very stylish dresser but I don't know if it's a thing for fans to go fashionable, too.
