Yes, just echoing what Marianna said about you should notice some stretch within a few hours, and they could continue to give a little during a day of wearing.

They should stretch out within a couple hours of wearing them. All my pants do what yours are doing above -- it's inevitable with my body shape, so I'm not sure if I'm the best person to weigh in on this. I think it also depends on what kind of top you wear with the pants. This current fit won't work with a close-fitting top or tucked in top, but will be fine under a loose flowy top, IMO. No one sees the waistband on my pants so I care more about how they fit through my front, legs, and rear (the stuff people see!) I really don't care if my waistband is folding over... no one sees it, and my belly folds over when I sit, so naturally my waistband will too.

Does the waistband feel uncomfortable to you? It looks like it is digging a bit, but only you know if it actually hurts.
It sounds like there are many different styles. Maybe another style would feel more comfortable.
Do you think the waistband is too high for you?

Okay, very helpful comments . . . and the main thing I got from you was that NYDJs stretch, so I must size down. The trouble is I'm not sure what my size is (I wear 14-16 in pants, depending on the brand, but often I'm sizing up to try to get the rise higher!) so I went with the "feel" . . . i.e., I bought the ones that were a little tight/uncomfortable in the store (size 12), with the expectation that they would stretch out and then feel just right. The 14s felt "just right" already in the dressing room, so I assumed they would be TOO big after stretching.

My question is, WHEN are they supposed to feel "just right"? Does it take a week? Two weeks? Several washes? Because right now (I wore them all day today, and half of yesterday) they still feel too tight. See how they are folding over at the waistband and giving me "muffin top"? So does that mean they are too tight and I should take them back and get the bigger ones? Or do I just need to be patient and let them stretch over a longer period of time?

Excuse my ignorance on this; I have never bought something expecting it will stretch before!

I have a pair of NYDJ white denim clamdiggers that I like very much. I've tried on other NYDJ jeans in the same size and they were extremely big in the waist -- and I don't have a small waist. So there's some variability, Samar, but I don't think they're all bad by any means.

The quality has improved, and I have just started putting a few clients back into NYDJ's. So far so good. You must size down.

I don't think that the washes are great - they don't resemble authentic denim. So that's the downside from me. However, their black denim is really good and that's where I start with my clients. They also do great Ponte knit pants and denim skirts!

I have a pair of the legging jeans. They do not fit me like leggings at all; more like skinnies, and not super-skinny, at that. The rise is very high. I don't mind that, although it wasn't really what I was after. I had complained that some others I was trying on were too low in the rise and the SA interpreted that to mean that I wanted a high rise; I did not; but I am (personally) LONG in the rise so very low rise jeans don't work; I need a mid-rise.

I find the NYDJ stretch out a LOT. I would have bought at least one size lower if I had known. However, they still look good tucked into boots with a tunic length sweater over top.

These were my first jeans following a large weight loss and not having bought jeans for a number of years, so they were an experiment. For me, they were not the "it" jean, but I am not sorry I experimented with them. If they fit you well and look great, I would say, go for it—but just be aware that they will stretch out with wearing.

I wear NYDJ (and I sell them at Nordies too...) and I do like them. I think the name of the brand makes them seem frumpy but that's not true of all the styles. I like them because they hold in my belly and don't give me muffin top. If you have a belly these jeans are usually a good fit. I ALWAYS recommend sizing down because they do stretch a lot, and some of them run really big. Buy them so they're snug -- you won't regret it -- even if they're a bit uncomfortable in the store. They have tons of different styles and silhouettes and colors now, so I would suggest going to Nordie's and trying a bunch on and seeing what fits best. I currently wear the Modern Flare and I also bought the Denim Legging, but I might return those because they're a little short on me (but great for tucking into boots). I also just received a pair of the Trouser style as gratis and they fit well! I also have a pair of NYDJ clams. Oh! And I almost forgot... I have the ponte pants and I love them.

As for quality, they wash up well! I never dry them. They are expensive (and probably overpriced) but the fit is fab so it's worth it to me.

I've never worn them so i have no idea. If you're looking for a high rise jeans though i would point you in the direction of Urban Outfitters. I love there BDG brand and i have a pair that fit me like a glove. I've worn them multiple times without washing and they didn't stretch or get saggy at all.

I think the key is what works for YOU. Do not be swayed by what doesn't work for others if you feel good in them! I have not had luck with the fit on NYDJ brand, but also no luck with many other brands that get a lot of love here (Gap Long and leans for example - loved the maternity ones, now they don't work for me at all). They just don't work for me. I try, but it's ok if they don't work. This forum is about finding what works for YOU.

I've worn NYDJ in the past but find that they have tremendous 'give'- so sizing down is always wise. I think what works on a specific body is different than what might work on a given body type in general- if that makes sense.
If if fits well, makes you feel confident and you like it-t here is nothing better fashion wise.

I don't have any experience with those jeans, but I am interested in what you said because I often find that mid-rise jeans are lower rise on me than I think they are supposed to be! Finding a pair of jeans is something I am hopeful for this fall, after getting rid of the ones I had because I didn't like the fit.

I went to Nordstrom today looking for jeans as recommended, and absolutely everything I tried on was too low-rise for me, even the ones they said were mid-rise. Very uncomfortable and made my tummy spill over very unattractively. Everything EXCEPT the Not Your Daughters Jeans brand. The rise on the NYDJs was _perfect_, and i loved how they looked. So I brought them home, but now looking them up here I am getting a bad vibe about them; people don't seem to think they're good. But I'm unclear on the reason why. Do they not hold up well? They look bad after washing? Or what?

I will take them back if you think they aren't worth keeping, but I really really liked the fit, and the saleslady at Nordstrom said they didn't have ANYTHING else with that high of a rise. If the quality is not good on NYDJ, do you know of any other brands I should try instead?

ETA: these jeans only say 1% spandex, not the 4% I thought someone mentioned
