I would do maybe a level 6 highlight. Or a coppery based (warm/violet) brown color. And then the next time you could go for a dark/medium blonde. Again, I'm not a professional. I've just died my hair a lot.

I too am a natural blonde and went level 5 brunette for a while. For budget reasons, I tried to go back on my own, and it was a complicated process (especially since I wanted a cool/beige blonde and I have gold undertones to my hair). I've found it's really hard to lift color and get my "perfect" desired result. (Perhaps because I'm not a professional). It's my understanding that only bleach or stripping will do that. If you want a gradual change, I'd definitely ask for some highlights, but I don't know if they can lighten without bleach (and then using a toner or deposit a lighter color over that). I've always been told "you can't lift color with color." The brunette looks beautiful, by the way.

I'm not an expert by any means Jenny but I have had a lot of different hair colours, I would probably look at highlights with a mix of copper and honey blonde, gradually increasing the ratio of blonde with each visit. I would expect to see more warmth and a lightening of tone after the first visit.

I like it both ways too, but I miss the old glamorous blonde that I was. I have been feeling like I've lost that me and I want her back.

I don't want to strip my current color, just add highlights a bit at a time until I'm back to blonde. I know that will take a while. The color I have now is supposedly semi-permanent but it doesn't seem to fade like I thought semi is supposed to.

Wow! What a difference hair color and style make. You look beautiful both ways JennyK! I am no help, but I'm sure some one will know what to tell them. Maybe you should go to a pricey salon the first time, since they might be able to carefully remove a lot of the color. I'm not sure I'd trust a student with that, although the instructors are known to step in with complicated stuff. Good luck!

note: I've reposted this to General. I had it in off topic but I think it better belongs here.

I've been a blonde almost all my life. Natural to start and needing more and more help as the years have gone by. After the twins were born I felt like I needed a big change, so I cut my hair (a lot) and had it dyed a dark brunette. I really liked it, but it's been a year and a half and I miss my longer blonde hair.

I know we've got some stellar stylists here. I was thinking that going back to blonde semi-gradually by doing highlights would be the best way to do it. My finances now dictate that I go to the local hairstyling school instead of my beloved stylist. It's a school with a great reputation though, and I always use the seniors.

I want to go to honey blonde from this. What should I tell the stylist to do first? Heavy all-over highlights? In what color?

TIA!
