Sarah, yay for a sabbatical!! I'm late here, but face some of the same fit challenges and needs, although my climate has changed now that I'm in Victoria.

Having said that, back in frigid Ontario, I learned to love the slightly cropped jean even in winter. WITH EXCEPTIONS. NO wide leg crops in winter back then. Nada.

But -- slim boyfriends, straights, and skinnies (which I rarely wear any more) all worked in slightly cropped lengths to tuck in, as long as I have my Smartwool or other heavy socks, and high enough boot shafts to close the gap. Like Jonesy, I actually preferred slightly cropped to full length -- less bulk and bunching.

Some boots I did or would wear in these situations....

Another vote for cropped! I love the look with a little ankle showing and a pair of booties. Unfortunately, I also live in a snowy/icy place so that look has a very short season (it's right now!). Then I revert to chunky socks or tuck the pants into taller boots.

I think the first three styles Angie recommended are what I'm looking for this fall, too. It has been tricky to figure out where to go from skinnies and "straights" that might as well be skinnies. I love wide-leg in the summer but in the winter they're impractical without thick socks or tights beneath.

Another one who prefers ankle-length all year long, including hitting the tops of ankle boots in cold weather and tucked as needed into real boot in snow.

I’m in exactly the same boat as you and also finding that styles have changed a lot in the last two years. I’ve decided to test a few new silhouettes including wider legs and slouchy straights this fall, but only time will tell what works in the winter and feels right too. Good luck!

When conditions are milder (more like Seattle weather!), I'm happy to wear my "mild weather" booties (also in Finds), like the Pikolinos, Blondos, and Timberlands. But even with wool socks, etc, those are not warm enough for me on a true Minnesota winter day. I guess I just have to learn to stuff my cropped jeans into the Baffins and not give it a second thought!

Another fabbers who wears cropped jeans in the winter—actually on straight jeans I prefer cropped & then to cuff longer jeans. For me the key was figuring out my preferred boot shaft (I like 6 inches) it fills the gap and adds warmth

Warm socks, HIGH shaft weatherproof boots, and winter woolies work really well. For heavy snow I wear my sperry duck boots.

Jonesy, I don't know why I'm averse to tucking my cropped jeans into my heavy-duty winter boots. i think I need to just get over that!

Sal, I hear you on cords.

Sarah, I wear all sorts of cropped pants and jeans in the winter :)! I wear them with booties for work and going out and about. For extremely cold conditions in which gear is required (walking the dog in a blizzard or sub-zero, windy conditions, e.g.) I tuck jeans (cropped or full-length) into a pair of UGGs that come up to mid-calf. I actually prefer it if they are at least a little cropped, because they are easier to tuck into my boots without it feeling too bulky. I realize I might be an outlier in this regard, lol!

But, if you aren't into cropped jeans or pants for winter, I know there are full-length jogger or straight-legged jeans out there that might be more in line with what you want.

Not jeans, but I have really enjoyed having a pair of cords this year. Mine are mid rise and a relaxed skinny shape. I am in NZ so doubt these will be available but something similar should be.

Thanks, all for chiming in! I really appreciate your suggestions.

Angie - those specific ideas are just what I was looking for. I wear the BFs a lot, and I think the other silhouettes would be great to try if I can find some that are relatively mid-rise. Thanks for helping me to get unstuck.

Jonesy - I do like joggers, and wear my non-denim ones quite a bit. But I worry about them for winter, because of bare ankles. Do you think you'll wear joggers in winter? How would you manage them?

Shevia, Tanya, and Slim Cat - sounds like you are on the same wavelength as Angie.

Joy, I do wear jeans a LOT, but I realize it might be hard to find these styles on those of us who need a lower rise. Good idea to consider other fabrications besides denim!

Congrats on the sabbatical! And sooo nice to see you, Sarah :)

Read this post first:

https://youlookfab.com/2021/03.....021-jeans/

It sounds like jeans are MEGA wardrobe essentials for you. Me too! High five!

Soooooo, lets throw in some trends. May I suggest trying these silhouettes:

relaxed straights

BF's

cuffed jeans

flares at the NEW shorter practical length

These are snow-friendly!

Determine per week how many pairs of jeans or bottoms you actually need. This will depend some on how you usually wash/dry jeans and what color you wear.

It is hard to find low waist and full length jeans right now. I am also needing a pull on style. Full length has been the hardest to find, and I am a short 5’3”. I have 3 pair of jeans plus I may wear one additional classic pair of jeans a week if they are low to mid rise. You might extend your search to heavy Ponte pants or velvet. I plan to wear fleece lined tights under lighter weight pants if needed and if the tights do not compress my body too much. Good luck!

Sarah, first of all, congrats on your sabbatical! Woo hoo! Have you looked at Angie's denim trends posts? She profiled lots of different denim silhouettes. I am terrible at using the search function, but maybe someone else will stroll along and add the link.

How do you feel about denim jogger styles? Comfy for home, trendy, and a cuff at the bottom for tucking into snow boots :). Or you could go with a straight leg? So you could still tuck into snow boots, but change up the silhouette a little bit.

Over the pandemic, I lost 10 pounds, so I am now down to 4 pairs of jeans that fit me (actually, 2 pairs of jeans, each in 2 washes; I guess I like to repeat styles!). Between losing weight and zooming most of the time, I wore AG Pimas (which fit more like a straight leg on me) almost every day last year. However, I think it's time to expand my denim collection. The constraints are:

1) I'm short-waisted, so the current high-rise styles don't work on me - they are terribly uncomfortable.

2) I live in cold, snowy Minnesota, so cropped styles are not practical in the winter, when I wear very warm snow boots most of the time (I change into shoes at work).

Other things to know - I'm on sabbatical this year, so anticipate a lot of zoom calls and a lot of days wearing jeans again, although I will go into work some of the time. But I won't be teaching.

Given these constraints, I'm feeling a bit stuck regarding how to update my denim collection. I love the AG Ex-BFs, and wore them a lot in the spring and now again in the fall, but they won't work as well once full-on winter arrives.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
