We ( husband, myself and DD2 aged 29) just met up yesterday afternoon at Vancouver airport. DD2 had already been here in Canada 3 days with 2 nights at a Vancouver hostel and one in a Victoria hostel. She had ferried over for one night and back the next day, and said it felt a lot longer on the ferry and buses than she had imagined.
We had done a very long overnight flight from NZ then picked up a rental car at the airport for the 3 of us. The drive to Whistler took 2.5 hours and was gruelling due to terrible traffic (Saturday afternoon) trying to get out of Vancouver to the Sea to Sky highway.
We enjoyed seeing Whistler but had overall very little time there, on the way back today we did the Sea to Sky gondola at Squamish and an easy walk to the base of Shannon Falls. Still $75 Canadian each including tax. The gondola at Whistler is even more expensive and we felt we chose the right one. It was awesome. We dropped her back to the airport as she had another flight today, left the rental car there, and got the train to downtown Vancouver which was very easy. No time to do much tonight just eat and a little city watching. Fun to have seen Whistler but without the time to do activities I do wonder if the long (scary, for us, other side of the road) drive up and back was worth it. We might have been fine to have just stayed at Squamish near the gondola?? But you don’t know these things when planning… estimates of the length of time to drive to Whistler were all too short from preparative reading.

We've been to all these places in BC too. And many times! Worthwhile :)

I agree with Suz. Visiting these three places is hectic in a week, and a lot of travel. Vancouver and Victoria are not close together! I vote skip Whistler. You'll get enough of an outdoorsy vibe in Victoria - and Vancouver is more of an urban city. Covered!

Have a fabulous trip!

I have been to all three places. I visited Vancouver many times and could spend a month there. We considered moving there in the early 90s. I went to Whistler to visit a friend and spent a week hiking. Beautiful. We went to Victoria a few years ago and stayed for a week.
Suz has been to these places recently, so she might have more recent information. If I went to Vancouver, I would stay at The Sylvia Hotel.

On our visits to Vancouver we’ve enjoyed going to Granville Island- lots of restaurants, galleries, arts and crafts shops,
Kitsilano Beach has great panoramic views of the city and mountains.
It was also fun going to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park where you can also walk along the treetop canopy.

You could probably see most of these sights together in one day if the weather is great. Hope you have a wonderful visit.

It’s been a while - but we loved the ferry trip to Vancouver Island and walking/biking/swimming in Stanley Park. Definite highlights! My sons hived the Science museum in Vancouver too.

My shopping in Vancouver was an epic fail - I definitely wish I had been on the forum then!

Vancouver is amazing! I've lived both there and in Victoria (where I currently live) and while Vancouver Island is indeed a special place, I miss Vancouver. Partly because I have close friends there, but also because it's a bigger, more diverse urban centre than Victoria.

The natural beauty in all these areas is unsurpassed, but Vancouver has the coast mountains -- closer than the Cascades are to Victoria, so a more important presence. The parks, beaches, neighbourhoods for walking -- all are terrific. The food is fantastic! Shopping is decent -- for a visitor from the US, prices will be good (since you get more for your $ here).

One week isn't long, though, so you might prefer to stick to two spots. Unless you will be flying to the Island, it takes an hour and a half by ferry to get here. (GORGEOUS ferry ride.-- well worth it! But the flights are faster, of course.) If you are taking the ferry, you should reserve unless coming on foot -- because in summer they get very booked up.

It really depends on your interests and what type of a holiday you are after, though. Each of these places has fantastic hiking, biking or mountain biking, water sports, scenery. Vancouver has more in the way of restaurants, theatre, music, museums, shopping.

You can PM me with specific questions! And have fun planning!

Hi all,

I`m planning a one-week family trip, only three of us, to Victoria, Vancouver, and Whistler this summer in early August. Victoria and Whistler are easy sells for their uniqueness, but I can`t wrap my mind around Vancouver. Is it a must-see? What should we not miss? If it were you, how would you divide your days, and of course, what would you wear? (I`d spend the whole time in Victoria in gardens, quaint haunts, and on bikes, but since we`re on the east coast and traveling that far, the fam says we should not miss the others). Your thoughts? Thanks!
