For 10.00 the grey is definitely worth a try. And I like the cord skirt. Quite versatile. It looks like a straight skirt in the pic tho.

Well . . . it just so happens I sort of accidentally got a below the knee (on me) a-line skirt that I didn't expect to win. It is quite casual, fine wale corduroy, but I think it might work with my sweaters and boots. Maybe Again, it's a low enough price that I'm willing to 'practice' with it and if it doesn't work out, I can happily donate or resell.

I can't talk, because I haven't posted pictures at all, but I wanted to suggest that you try Angie's suggestion of a midi or a-line winter skirt even though you might be concerned that it won't look quite right on your shape. I have a feeling that something like this might just the thing to pair with your shorter winter sweaters. I don't know what kind of stores you have in your area - or if there's a chance you could go and try some stuff on and post pics from the dressing room before buying, but if this is a possibility - then I think this is a good idea.

That said...these items might be totally gone from the stores by now and perhaps you might have to wait until July/August when all the 'new' stuff comes out for fall/winter.

I like Diana's short wool skirt paired with tights and nice boots and can see you pairing your winter sweaters with something along these lines. But I *also* think that Angie's suggestion of an a-line or slightly longer midi-ish length winter skirt might have you veering into "killer to the power of killer" zone, so I think it's definitely worth trying the idea.

When I suggested a winter skirt, such as one of those nice leather skirts that were so popular last fall, I hadn't accounted for the fact that your winter sweaters are fairly close-fitting, unlike the "Only Mine" brand slouchy cashmere oatmeal sweater that looked so fab with the leather pencil shaped skirt.

The (Only Mine) slouchy, soft, creamy-ish sweater looked amazing with a very sharply tailored, relatively slim-fitting black leather skirt, and I am thinking that what Angie is getting at here is that your sweaters are not slouchy...and that in order to get the same sort of effect, you might want the volume (not much) on the bottom - hence the suggestion to try a-line or midi-length skirts. You'd just be taking that slouchy, soft ivory sweater paired with a sharp, slim fitting skirt and reversing it all - your sweaters aren't that boxy or slouchy...but the thing is - you could probably get the same effect by trying a longer, flowy-er skirt.

Just something to consider, if you really want to keep those lovely, but short-ish sweaters that you're just now figuring out how to wear again, having moved back to a winter climate.

I like the idea o a winter skirt but not necessarily to mak what you currently have work.I was guilty of that also and resolve to ground some things for the summer.Better to have less outfits that work than several sweaters( or other item) that don't work but we are always trying to make work.

Deborah, I agree charcoal would be ideal, as would another inch in length probably. At any rate, I decided this would be worth the low $10 price tag to see if I would wear it as intended. Sometimes my great ideas don't end up translating into wearable outfits afterall lol.
I do think I will eventually go ahead with charcoal grey trousers though. I think even above and beyond interview wear I could sass them up enough to go out in.

I want to like the first one but the lighter grey on the other side of the ruffle is putting me off. I like 2 but my question is on the color. I would like to see you in a more charcoal grey. Is that a color you find works for you? Given this is a skirt for cooler weather I find a darker shade more complementing of tbe season. Im not sure either of these skirts are right for you (based on the color). I like Claire's suggestion of maybe thrifting one to try. I do that sometimes when I'm trying out something new and if it works then Im happy to invest in a new garment for he long term.

I really like the 2nd one, and I think the vibe of Diana's is great for you as well. I don't think it's too short since you'll be wearing tights in the winter.

My thinking process is so much like yours Mo! My first thought was YES, that's the perfect solution, but then I understand not wanting to buy something just to go with other things that are past their fashion prime! Can you try to thrift a skirt to wear with your sweaters? I like the idea of one that would be long enough to actually keep you warm (like a midi), but then there's the whole boot-length- skirt hem issue to deal with. I feel for you with the interview clothes too! I've been wearing the most sorry business clothes to volunteer in; they really don't cross over into my regular life/style at all! I hate to spend money on them. Argh!

Yes, Diana, that's it!! That's the look I'm seeking. Thank you! I want to be able to put a chunky sweater, boots and tights with it and alternately pumps and a blouse or blazer when needed.

Angie, thanks for the input . . . the way the weather is going, I'm thinking I could get plenty of 'this season' wear out of such a skirt unfortunately! I'm worried about a-lines with my higher shelf hip - I fear I look kinda like a triangle in them :/

The 19" looks like perfect length. I like the style of #2 but perhaps keep looking for a slightly longer version (unless the hip on that pictured one would sit a little lower than your black in which case it would make up the difference?)
I can see where you are going with this - you do need an interview skirt. I love the shape on 2, not so much the frills on 1 which make it non-interview skirt.

Wait and keep looking for a better quality similar to skirt #2?

Thanks, Scarlet. I have the hardest time with skirts that are interesting enough for me to like them, but not too 'out there' to also do double duty as business wear the 1% of the time I would need them for that purpose. The cheapie skirt is 18.5" and I'm 5' 4.5"
I just tried to find a similar length skirt in my closet, and this black chiffon one is 19". Still too short?

I like both skirts, but I actually think the second, cheaper one has more of the vibe you're going for. I think the first one looks almost a little too refined, more like suiting, if you know what I mean.
Whichever you choose, I would recommend making sure it has a lining. Unlined wool skirts are scratchy! Plus they stick to tights like mad. (Or you will have to find an appropriate length slip to go underneath.)

In light of my short top/sweater struggles of late, I started thinking perhaps I should have a winter skirt in my wardrobe. I like my shorter sweaters but it is too much of a struggle to make them work with pants. But, it's darn cold out when I feel like snuggling up into them, so my current lightweight skirts are not an option. On to the idea of the winter skirt!
I had a cable knit mini, but it was both juvenile and too similar in texture to the sweaters I would want to wear. So I thought a wool blend would be perfect. Also, it could double as possible interview wear with a button down? (I had been contemplating either charcoal slacks or skirt in the back of my mind for a few weeks now - even have the Gap Modern Boot trousers in a watch list)
The question is whether I should tread lightly into this idea with a cheapie cute wool skirt first (#2) or jump in with a quality designer model (#1)? Both are returnable, by the way.

(and as an aside, I have added chunky sweaters long enough for pants to my F/W shopping list!)

EDIT: of course, the other side of this is that I'm in the cycle of trying to find new things to make old things work, instead of just cutting my losses and starting fresh with new sweaters . . . hmmmm.
