@Jenni NZ - A really interesting article - thanks for posting!

This is an informative post. I have not consigned my clothing because usually I hold onto clothing for a number of years. I really like to get longevity out of what I buy, so I am pretty sure that the clothing I am looking to edit out of my closet would be rejected.

I quit consigning too. That whole third Tuesday of the month, between 11 & 1, only on a full moon thing was just a pain in the arse. I also don't have the same type of labels in my closet anymore, since country life is not kind to clothes.

I just donate the fast-fashion type stuff; and the nice stuff goes to a friend of the family, who takes what she likes & donated the rest to her favorite cause. At least that way, I feel like something worthwhile has come of the money I spent on the items

I only tried to consign once and sold 3/5 which I think netted me about $50.00

At our local place you have to hand over 5 at once, in season and have the quality accepted. I rarely have 5 that fit the bill as my size is constant and I do not often discard pieces of the right quality.

However I regularly shop there - two purchases this year. Our hospice charity shop has an up market branch with "curated"stock that I often visit also and get a piece or two each year.

I have sold on Trade Me too (EBay).

I too have given up on consigning - too much hassle! Scheduling drop-offs for assessment is too time-consuming, I work full time and then some, and was aggravated to only be able to show up the second Tuesday of the month between the hours of 11 and 1pm on full moons...

Plus, I'd always feel like I had a bunch of "holding zone" totes or bags I'd be waiting to consign, instead of just a straight-up closet purge straight to Goodwill (I make sure I take a charitable donation tax deduction form).

I don't have designer items, though, so I guess I might feel differently if I did.

Oh PS, in NZ you don't get a tax rebate for physical donations either. So once the cost is sunk, it is really sunk! Enough to turn one into a minimalist which is so not me, especially relating to books... am trying to swear off buying those as well.

It's really hard to know what to do, I agree. I tried to sell some clothes once on our local E-bay equivalent and had no success. I assume I priced them higher than what others thought they were worth, which I have since read is a thing. ( The owner always psychologically over-values their own stuff compared with what others think it is worth, I read). I am clearing 27 years of stuff at my house and so far got $70 from one bookshop and $45 from another, but not everything was taken so I had to donate the rest. I took the $135 as like a bonus but it did mean 2 extra trips which cost petrol and time. When I tackled another bookshelf I just donated.
I stopped donating to our Salvation Army too when they moved the drop off place to where it was too hard to park. Hospice shops now get my stuff mainly. I have been thinking about how much volunteer time must be taken and wishing our Government could just fund the hospices properly so they didn't have to fundraise! Our Government just posted a big surplus so honestly... it's an essential service. I have made my peace with donating even though like Unfrumped I struggle with sunk cost. It has made me an even more careful shopper.

Great discussion!! Thanks!

I really like the idea of donating to a "Dress for Success" type of organization.

I don't donate to Salvation army anymore. Near me, donations have to be brought out back to a shipping container. It is old and dirty. During my last visit, a worker was manning the drop off area. I had some household breakable items that they just threw in.. and the worker didnt seem to care when I mentioned the fragility of the items. I wrapped them well, but it made me wonder what happens to all of this stuff...

I definitely now have a more discerning eye when purchasing...

Yes, it can be frustrating depending on your location. I pretty much gave up on consigning in favour of donation. The woman who ran the shop near my old home knew her clientele and they were not my size/ didn't have my taste. So she often refused beautiful items in great condition simply because she felt they wouldn't sell.

No good advice, just commiserating, as I’ve gone back& forth , have whined on YLF and gotten good hand- holding.

Quit consigning because schedules were too unpredictable and not great return. Did one of the mail- in companies before it changed. Take stuff to Goodwill a lot. ( No DFS here).
Took stuff to direct- buy resale shop that pays a tiny fraction on the dollar and rejects “ good stuff “ as I expect it’s not their demographic- at least this was kinda simple, but takes 2 trips , first they review and make you an offer and then you pick up, and I take the rejects right to Goodwill. So I thought that was going to be the way I’d keep going, but then at the end of a year I’m thinking, I made ? 4 x 2 = 8 trips, all still have to work around store schedules and mine, + the trips to Goodwill, and for ...how much? Plus there is the emotional toll- first hopeful, “look, I’m taking this great jacket, these shoes” followed by the downer moment because someone HAS “ assessed “ my items and found them not worth much.
In my heart I know this is not worth it— so it must say something about my struggle with sunk costs.

I think I need another swearing-off: go only to Goodwill ( bagged & done, convenient locations and hours) and use the time for - ANYTHING else- exercise, outfit creation.

I also doubt I have enough items to meet the minimums for the consignment place near me, so I decided to donate my work clothes to an organization that has both a "Dress for Success" type of program, as well as a retail store where they sell some items. I figured there was no guarantee my items would sell at consignment, and I can take a tax deduction for the donation, plus the satisfaction in thinking that my clothes went to someone who truly needed them.

Never had any luck at consignment shops near me,,except once-had a fairly new pair o booties that i bought at payless-cheap, but needed something really fast to keep my feet warm at a football game. wore twice and took them to a consignment shop-got 3/4 of what I paid for them, But they rejected a very good pair of heeled leather ones-no reason given. Then at another consignment shop, that has since gone out of business, I took a $100.00 plus pair of high boots in and they sold quickly but I only got $17.00 back for them. Most of the items in that shop were dated, and expensive. They were only in business a little over a year.

I agree with La Pedestrienne. Ive taken a lot to consignment and gotten barely any money back, so its just not worth it. On the upside, it reminds me to be a lot more careful with purchases if i know that $100 item will get me under $10! Most things i just donate instead.
As far as purchases, I have found some gems at consignment shops, but been victim of sale goggles too. Agree re the availability of different colors, and its easier to pick my version of a color if on a lineup w others. My question with things there is, why did the last person pass it on?

How frustrating! I haven't had this issue near me, but most of what I consign is gear or kid clothes (and I think the bar for wear-and-tear, and also what's "in style" in these categories is significantly lower), and the occasional mistake purchase (usually final sale stuff, new with tags).

If you have the space, putting things up on eBay or Poshmark may actually be less of a headache than jumping through the consignment shop's hoops. Also, you have to decide how much your time is worth, because the returns on most consignments are pretty small -- I think for a lot of people it just isn't worth the work, so they'd rather donate and support a good cause.

It does bother me, actually, that a lot of consignment shops seem to be focusing on merchandise that is only from the last season or last year. Part of the reason I like to shop secondhand is because the quality on older goods is often better, or because I'm looking for a colour or silhouette I can't find at retail. A lot of consignment shops are starting to look a bit like TJMaxx or Ross, if you ask me -- just discounted fast-fashion, last season's cast-offs, etc. I get that it's all part of the accelerated retail cycle; people buy more frequently and discard more frequently, and it's reflected at every level of the fashion market...

I recently lost some weight and decided to use it as an opportunity to consign/ refresh my wardrobe. I brought 19 new and like-new items to a local consignment store and they only accepted 4 items. (Well technically they rejected those also since 10 items have to be accepted when you initially consign with them) For example, they told me that Talbots changed their labels recently so they are rejecting items with the old labels. So frustrating!! My items are like new, but I guess technically old due to the label. What a bummer. Deciding if I should try another store or not, but I suspect they may all be the same....
