Thanks all! I've actually not really been running lately, just wanted to test them and see if I could. I like to keep things as minimal as I can, since my house is small, but have such a big variety of activities I like to do- so it's tough.

Ideally I'd just have 1 pair of sneakers for walking, running, biking, and the gym (if I ever decide to return)- and save my limited real estate for fun shoes!

I enjoy reading about everyone's different types of footwear needs! Means you're looking after those precious feet - and that rocks

Yay, you tried the barefoot shoes! Thanks for reporting back. I agree with others that they are not for running on pavement. I see them as much more in tune with the nature-connected outdoorsy stuff you wrote about in your earlier post than with pavement or track running. Like being barefoot (feeling the ground, etc) but warmer

The scenery is beautiful. You definitely need shoes that you never need to think about so you can enjoy it.

It is a completely different style of running to run barefoot or in thin-soled shoes. A person cannot run with the typical heel strike; one needs to use a midfoot soft landing after which the rest of the foot comes down. Without being accustomed to barefoot running, it can be harmful to run on pavement with barefoot shoes! Once you get used to it, though, and adapt your gain, it is actually healthier to run or walk "barefoot" and results in fewer injuries.

Oh, and I think they're cute shoes, too!

Agree with LaPed’s recommendation of Altras. I have both and do find the toebox on Merrels a little shallow. Altras are almost a little too roomy, so you’ll have to try a try a few before you find something that’s just right.

I use my Vapor Gloves on trails and dirt roads, and have learned to be cognizant of rocks and other poky things. On pavement, I use Altra Escalantes for the extra cush. The stack height is important on unnaturally hard surfaces. You could also check out Topo Athletic; they have low- and zero-drop models, roomy toes, and more stack height than the Merrells. I have a pair of the Magnifly 3 model in my closet for when I retire my Escalantes.

Do not run on pavement in barefoot shoes! The human foot can’t take that stress without a LOT of shock-absorption help IMO, despite reports of people “training” for months to be able to do so. Try jogging in them on a sandy beach or on soft grass perhaps. Otherwise, walk with them, especially on uneven surfaces like wooded trails—your foot and leg muscles will get so strong!

I walk on the trails in daylight, but if I walk before work it's still dark out, so that's why I walk on the street. Some are paved but others not in my neighborhood. It wasn't awful by any means, just nicer on soft surfaces!
They're definitely just walking not running shoes.

I would wear them on the trails and avoid running and pavement. It may be worth it not to have back pain.

These were recommended by LaPed and I took them out for my daily walk this morning. The walk was a bit over 2 miles on paved road, unpaved road, and in the woods.

The good:
I didn't have the back pain that I get from my traditional big sole trainers!
I felt like I was walking faster than normal, walking naturally, and more balanced than in regular trainers.
It was drizzling, and they kept my feet dry.
They're nice and lightweight.
They're especially comfortable in the woods and softer surfaces.
They are sufficiently narrow in the heel so they didn't slip.
They're very inexpensive from Big Warehouse.
They're quicker to get on and off than my regular trainers, despite the laces.

The not so good:
They're not for running, at least on pavement. I did get a little twinge in my calf, nothing serious, but will stick to my Saucony's for running. It's too bad cause they felt like they should be ideal, but it's a hard landing :(
They're wide at the toes, so look a bit odd on my feet.
The toe box could be a bit higher. I'll stuff them with something to try to stretch them.
I could feel rocks through the soles- almost like mocassins but not quite as much.

I still prefer my Birkies, but Winter is Coming
