I look forward to seeing the final result! As I petite I rely on alterations for perfect fit as well. Tailoring things to your body really does make a difference.
Fortunately I sew so I can do my own nips and tucks. I just bought a cover stitch machine (it does the stitch that you see on knits at the hem and sleeves) and I'm beside myself with excitement.

Nice print! I'm liking your MO of altering an inexpensive dress to get it just right for you. Cut and fit is where high street retailers most often fail in my experience. I bet it will last longer in your wardrobe that way.

That dress is fantastic on you, KL! In my experience it's worth paying money for substantial alterations. I'm fine having my dry cleaner take up hems, but if I need waist or armhole alterations, I prefer a dressmaker.

I agree with you that a perfectly fitting item makes a huge difference. It can make a fast-fashion piece feel Iike a designer item. It's extra effort and money, but totally worth it.

MsMaven: My current tailor is also a dressmaker, although I've never tried that before. Jacquie's in Palo Alto... I really do recommend her if cost is no object (rarely the case, alas).

I've only started to rely heavily on alterations in the past couple of years, and it has really opened up my options as a petite. Of course I've wasted money too in the process--no different than shopping--but I'm addicted to perfect fit now.

I think it is great that you spend the time and money to get your things fitted properly. We forget how much we spent on something, but remember how often we wore and enjoyed it.

I wish I could recommend a good tailor on the peninsula or South Bay. Years ago someone recommended an excellent dressmaker, but I never got around to going to see her. Generally I tend to stay away from clothes that need more than hemming.

My latest adventure in alterations was taking this H&M dress (copycatting Tanya) to the tailor today for an overhaul. I wanted it to fit like it does on the model, but I'm about 6 inches shorter. Ended up having the size 6 altered down in the bust and hips (the size 4 was skin-tight across my rear) as well as shortened several inches to hit above the knee. Here is a "before" photo, although the too-large fit issues aren't visible.

I remarked laughingly to my tailor, who likes to make conversation as she pins, that I wanted the dress *shorter* so that I could wear it to work. Seems ironic given the difficulties that others have finding dresses with enough length, but my work dress code is strongly casual (California tech culture) and I don't want to look more overdressed than I already do when I decide to dress up for the day.

The cost of alterations will be about double the price of the dress itself, but thankfully it was an inexpensive purchase. And the print is unique, in my very favorite colors, so I'm willing to pay for a perfect fit. I trust my tailor implicitly and she does amazing work, although it's priced accordingly. Once I had a pair of jeans taken in at the waist; they did it by splitting the seat and the alteration is totally invisible, but I ended up paying $40 for a waist alteration, eek. Anyone have a tailor recommendation on the SF peninsula? ;)
