Caro, thanks for the link. I'm not really looking to add anything, happily, only downscale. I still have a few summery garments that are stored at my parents', as they didn't fit into the suitcase.

Interesting question. If you are out of storage space, and not wearing all your clothes, I would purge until you have space to "breathe" again. However, if you are anticipating a change of wardrobe needs in the future, then I would purge sparingly because it sounds like most items are relatively new (5 months or less) and your needs are changing (SO arriving in town in the future). For myself, my most successful closet purges were after I decided what my needs were. What mini capsules do I need and how many outfits within each capsule do I need.

I have been increasing strict with wardrobe purging/editing myself this past year and have never liked my closet more. But I think I am trying to channel clearlyclaire, so that may affect my views!

I'm asking myself some of the same questions right now. Will be very interested to follow this thread. In answer to the question, if there's still some uncertainty about what you'll need in the near future, I wouldn't toss items you like.

We-ell, I do have plenty o' dresses that perhaps don't even get worn once a year. However, they are still useful to me. I mean, I regularly go dig out a dress I haven't worn in aeons because an occasion has come up.

On the other hand, I have culled - a lot - because of space issues. A couple of bins' worth are allotted to dresses now, and that's it.

The main thing is dont try to act on concerns that might be someone else's but that you don't share. Meaning, if you don't feel moved to make big decisions or purges, don't.

This is a great post & the links on essentials & capsules are very helpful too.

I wouldn't edit anything yet, I'd do some more digging on what I really want to be wearing for all the occasions in my life & then work back from there.

Former, maybe, because of the possible wardrobe change come summer/fall. Unless you're really feeling crowded in your small space.

One-and-a-half years ago, I got rid of half of my wardrobe, 3/4 of my shoes (I have very problematic feet) and half of my make-up. I'd never given away clothes before of guilt stemming from family values (don't waste) and my own (wasted money). That experience liberating and, compounded with frequent moves, emphasized the importance to me a unique but reduced wardrobe.

Photographing my wardrobe for the Stylebook app made me acutely aware that I still don't wear more than half of my wardrobe. I like the clothes of have, but there are several discrepancies:
a) I own more skirts and dress than pants, even though I wear pants most of the time. Skirts and dresses, however, get packed when visiting SO.
b) Makeup and scarves--I haven't worn many for months, even though I like knowing they're there.

I'm not sure if the problem at this point is either:
a) I don't absolutely love a lot of what I have--like, but not love;
b) I don't feel compelled to push myself sartorially everyday because I don't always go into campus, and/or I'm only there for two hours, and therefore feel like it's a 'wasted' effort.

In this case, if you had bought garments/make-up as recently as 5 months ago, would you still hang onto them if you liked them, they fit, etc., thinking that you'll get into them at some point? SO and I may be in the same city come the summer/fall, so the skirts/dress would be worn more frequently.
Or would you be strict with yourself and get rid of it because the times you use them are to few to justify space in an otherwise small room?
