White booties, pleated voluminous midis and wider legs/culotte and I have always loved (and worn no matter trends) my jackets with rutched up sleeves and my cropped pants -summer or winter (as they show off the slimmest parts of my bod:-))). Instead I never tuck (as have a bit of tummy) and don't wear all denim of same color.

Cardiff girl: It is NOT bizare: "I find that the older I get the quicker I take to new fashions ,it’s supposed to be the other way round". Hah, but we are fortunate enough to have our eyes trained here on the YLF:-) the more older the more lived/seen/accepted/tried/willing to try!:-)

Semi-tucks are just plain goofy-looking, IMNSHO. Grew up on fully tucked shirts, untucked is fine. The key for both is the shape and proportion of the top and the hem.

Like Andrea H, I've now seen almost every trend make a full circle through, so I can mentally relate to them all.
Right now, I'm trying to resist the paperbag waist. LOVED the look in the '80s, but as a short-torso, busty hourglass, just could never make it work--not enough vertical room between the top of the waist and my bust. Have I remembered my old lesson for this trend's reincarnation?
;-)

Cardiff girl, I think--at least for myself--the reason I adjust quicker the older I get is that, frankly, I have seen it all before in one form or another. Very little is truly new. I know that there are certain things I have always been drawn to that are divisive for others and whenever they come back into style every 10 or 15 years I snap them up (culottes, jumpsuits, maxi skirts, joggers). There are others things that I may have worn just because they were trendy when I was younger that, once they went out, I found objectively unappealing and I stay away from those when they come back. And, sadly, some things come back that I like but can't pull off anymore. (Have somehow lost the ability to walk in mules.)

The truly new thing that has semi changed my life once my eye adapted to it is the semi tuck, especially the one where you twist the front of a thicker top when you tuck. Pure genius.

My eye seems to adjust quite quickly. But as others have said, there are many trends that I don't like for myself, which is a different thing. One recent one that I found generally difficult was the "fussy sleeve" trend. It just felt too impractically and, well, fussy. So it was almost a poison eye for me. But then I bought a bell sleeved jacket! Never say never.

I really don’t like high shaft boots worn with a gap between them and the trousers.ditto skirts with the same boots.
My eye has adjusted to cropped wideleg trousers quite quickly.Bizarely I find that the older I get the quicker I take to new fashions ,it’s supposed to be the other way round!(except for the leg gap ,see above,!)

I do have looks I prefer for me and those I don't. And in general - I have always liked A line skirts for example, whether trendy or not, and coral is a colour I love and am drawn to.....

There are patterns, styles and looks I am less fond of - plaid is not a pattern I am drawn to but I am wearing a gingham/plaid dress now!! I have to be careful because I see others sporting gorgeous plaid shirts that look wonderful but if I bite I know it is high risk of being a mistake. Animal print is not my favourite but in the past I had a cheetah dress that I loved and a leopard print blouse that was a workhorse. With these patterns I am very clear about what I like for me.

One look I never warmed to was platform stiletto heels - luckily that trend has passed. And denim cutoffs with the pockets poking out?

I think my poison eye can be others sugar eye too and vice versa. I no longer own a casual maxi dress but I did have four in the past - two of which I loved and were total workhorses. I didn't see the unileg thing at all - I felt tall and willowy and as if I was at a resort (which is a good thing). At the time I found them easier than the constant array of dresses that were too short - thank goodness that has passed.

That is what makes fashion fun!!

I try to be open to everything and minimize my poison eyes. I still struggle with wearing very dark navy with black - it looks to me like dressing in the dark and not intentional. I also pause at outfits some women wear to work - hemlines so short that I see their underwear when they are climbing stears in front of me. Dresses with sequins and sky high shoes like they are on they way to party and not to work. Or maxi dresses with straps and flip flops that belong to a beach and not the office.

I am adjusting to tucking tops into higher waists (or at least to mimic a higher waisted look). I've always had a poison eye for this for two reasons. I'm short waisted, and tucking has always seemed wrong on me. Also, if I buy a top in a regular length rather than petite, there is way too much fabric for tucking a lot of the time. I am not really a neat, polished sort, and I always have trouble getting tucking to lay neatly.

Also, I went to Catholic school, and used to untuck my button down tops from my uniform skirt or pants as soon as the bell rang in the afternoon! This is a less serious reason, as that was 20+ years ago now.

That said, this season, tucked tops are making things look fresher to me, so I'm trying it out, within the limitations stated above.

Ooh, Angie, looking forward to a poison-eye post ;)

For me, my recent adjustment has been to higher-waisted jeans. I now really appreciate the look and am keen to evolve my wardrobe in that direction, as things need replacing. Dressy sneakers is another one I've come around on.

I cannot adjust to exaggerated-oversized looks - it just looks sooo uncomfortable to me.

For example - I adore dressy maxi skirts and dresses. It's the casual versions worn in a certain way that create uni-leg and are worn with casual flats/sandals that are the poison eye. I LOVE casual maxi dresses and skirts with high-low hemlines because it oftsets uni-leg. They look like midis. SEE. Very specific!

My eye adjusts very quickly to new and "new" looks because of my line of work. I am sooooo exposed to it all and ALL the time, which helps. I have a harder time with my four poison eye looks/styles though. I try hard to keep a very open fashion and style mind, even with my poison eyes.

Man-pris seem to be a prequisite for hire in the bakery cafe. That is, it’s an on the spot hire if a guy comes in wearing them. Lol. Production does not understand this.

Thanks for the replies! It's so interesting how our acceptance of new styles evolves.

My eyes are admittedly very slow to adjust. I'll usually remain on the sidelines as the braver souls among us dive right in to newer looks. Thank goodness for them and their WIWs, though, or I might never get used to the previously unimaginable. ;)

My attitudes have a lot to do with the "fashion rules" I grew up hearing. Unfrumped's comment about pant lengths resonated. Even though I love cropped jeans and wear them all summer, I sometimes hear the grade-school term "high-waters" in my head.

Tucking in tops was so out for so long, it took quite a while before it started looking right to me again. And jeans with tapered legs, as Angie mentioned in her blog post today -- they weren't supposed to be flattering on a grown woman's body. I'm pretty sure I heard Stacy London say that about a million times.

But here we are, and here I am wearing skinny jeans. Never say never!

I think the one-side-tuck of a buttoned shirt is weird too BUT I tried it myself the other day and found that it was quite practical in terms of layering. Not as much bulk as tucked-and-bloused, but less messy looking than totally untucked. Perhaps will try again.

So much ankle! That has been hard. Some of the shapes and kenghtgs still looked like oops, I outgrew my pants. Finally adjusted to some forms, mostly if slim or slim- straight pants and amazingly, for suits, too that started looki mores “ modern” to me. Cropped flares were just Way out there for me, though some minimal cropped- flares ( mild flare) actually provide a kind of balance.

Love sneakers, but prefer lower- profile ones and have not adjusted to Big. White.Shoes with skirts and dresses.
I love the semi-tuck but seldom use it.
Can’t use it at work.

There are many looks I celebrate on others but won't wear myself because they would involve too much effort to make them work on my proportions and coloring so I am passing on them for now:

White sneakers and white boots: These will feel more psychologically comfy once my hair is mostly silver in five or ten years. By that time, they will be nearly impossible to find.

Athleisure anything: I am pre-Title 9 and never considered being an athlete in school and don't want to pretend now. But I will play tough girl.

I've sat out drapey tops, low waist jeans and pants, tall boots, and various color trends that don't quite work for me.

I will continue to pattern mix and color mix (thanks, Angie, for teaching me about both!) as long as I live even if they are no longer a *thang*.

Interesting post, Like the Season, thank you. Navy with black and bootcuts with sneakers looks great on you.
I have embraced the bootcuts with flats as well. Experimenting now with tucking and semi tucking, but not really there yet.
Still have not embraced white boots - but I am tempted to get a pair. The closest to light winter footwear is a new pair of light peachy suede Chelsea boots I just bought, but I have not worn them yet....
Still adjusting to long blazers....

I posted yesterday about a couple of looks that my eyes suddenly adjusted to: navy with black, and sneakers with bootcut jeans.

Here a couple of others that eventually clicked for me:

Full and half tucks. Although I still don't get tucking in the left front of a button up shirt but not the right. Or vice versa.

Denim from head to toe. Absolutely love this now and wear often.

How about you? What are some current styles you've adjusted to? Which ones remain elusive? (Me: white boots and animal prints.)
