Vix - meant to get back to this before - You are probably right re the width of the shoulders. I got the feeling from the writing in the body shape bible that they intended Skittles to have broader shoulders than other pearish types. It is still the t & S shape I would be closest to as my very small A cup bust wouldn't make me any of their hourglassy types.

Hi Anne --

Sorry for the late response!

I'm actually the opposite of you -- very short-waisted. But long-torso'd (annoyingly). Regardless, I can empathize with your excitement about finding a dress that hits the right waist spot!

I will take your word for it that you're a T&S Skittle...your shoulders look much broader/more balanced with hips to me!

I just reviewed their Brick tips and I certainly use many of them -- especially the waistline detailing stuff + curved seaming, necklines, and purses. I always end up modifying tips to take in my specific proportions/fit issues -- or lack thereof! -- but I find the ones I called out never do me wrong.

Hello and thanks everyone for confirming my thoughts!

Vix thanks for all the time you put into your post. There are some good suggestions here. While we are talking Trinny and Susannah - I am almost point for point (barring only the ankles) bang on for their "skittle" body type. I opened the page and thought I was looking at myself in the mirror! I remember thinking that their suggestions for the "brick" as they put it, were very flattering. What did you think of them.

One of the things that made this dress such a rare fit for me is that the waist actually fits at my real waist. being longwaisted often the waist fits on my rib cage and so hip pockets or peplums obscure my waistline rather than accentuating them. Are you longwaisted too?

Mo - interesting that we might be the same.

This is a very good tip for me, thanks! I have a similar shape. Maybe that's why these slightly exaggerated cargo pockets work for me on this skirt. Eye opening

Hi Anne --

You're right, that shirtdress is beautiful on you!

I'm with you on the peplums...I kept waiting to see more last year when the 40s/90s resurgence was it was slim pickings, alas.

You and I have similar shape issues, though it looks like you stay tiny up top no matter what your size while I gain/lose all over evenly...but it's my very low hip that matches up with my shoulder width. [I'm more of a Trinny/Sus "Brick" -- though I prefer "Bread Loaf" -- than a Rectangle!]

Anyway, I'm always looking for ways to smooth the transition from (non-indented) waist to knee.

Now that you've discovered the pocket placement thing, you might keep your eye out for cardigans or jackets that end at the high hip AND have hip pockets. The good news is these are often on sale because other women find them unflattering. ;)

Can't remember if you own some like this, but I also like:

- tops that are rouched all the way down (in wovens) or in knits, draped/rouched at the hips

- banded-bottom tops that one can bring up/down to the high hip (one trend my more classic butt jumped on a few years ago was the banded dolman!)

- skirts that are rouched or draped across the hips

You may be noticing a theme, ha.

Have fun experimenting...would love to see what else you end up with!

I think you hit on something, and it makes total sense - you're rounding out below the waist and shifting visual proportions. Clever you!

Hmm, interesting insight. If I understand the body type right, you mean you have narrow hip bones, but more breadth on the thighs/bottom? In any case this dress is very flattering on you.

Well it is a while now since I posted on body type issues! For those who have joined YLF more recently I am either a pear with strong shoulders or a bottom heavy hourglass - with a strong dose of rectangle thrown in too.

Anyway I have breadth at the low hip (thigh/ bottom) and not high. Imogen of the Inside style blog calls me me an X.

So the reason for this post is that I think I have discovered that adding a little to the high hip is actually a flattering look for me. My new black shirtdress has hip pockets that seem to look good. I then remembered a fitted tailored jacket I had back in the 90's that fitted to the waist and then had a slight peplum (just flared, not ruffled or gathered). It is an interesting discovery.
