My cobbler added a thin rubber heel covering to the existing heels of a pair of slippery booties last winter, the winter from hell in the Northeast. I did not notice a difference in feel, other than I was much more secure on wet or slippery surfaces.

Agree that the rubber can make a big difference. Shoemakers have different options with varying textures and properties. I think it is especially worthwhile on favorites and to protect higher end pairs. I have them added before I wear them.

I have added rubber soles and heel plates to many of my leather soled shoes. It's made them a bit heavier and louder, but has unquestionably added to their life.

The fryes I currently own (Veronica shorties) have rubber over the leather already. However, I have had other frye styles in the past with only the leather sole and I would definitely recommend having the rubber added if you do any sort of significant regular outdoor walking. They're thin and shouldn't affect the balance much. Depending on the design, it might also be useful to replace the heel plates with heavier ones with better traction - these tend to be a little thicker and would balance out the additional rubber in back. My commute (about 1 mile each way over sidewalks and cobblestones) destroys leather soles, plus I find them incredibly slippery when it's wet or icy.

I was reading reviews of some Frye boots and someone advised getting rubber sole savers in order to preserve the longevity of the shoe. Is this recommended? I would have thought that the soles might alter the balance of the shoe, unless you shave the leather sole. Do their leather soles not hold up to daily walking?
