Joy, do you have the link to Angie's belt-shortening trick? Might be worthwhile to link it here as well.

And I'm going to have to try that brooch-as-pendant idea sometime!

This is a great thread. the ideas I've thought of have already been mentioned. If DH doesn't want you to use his ties, they are usually not more than 99 cents at the thrift store.
Wrap a necklace around your arm for a bracelet.
Use a brooch on a chain as a pendant.
Use a fabric belt around your neck tied like a neck tie, only lower.
Use men's belts with Angie's belt-shortening trick.

I was so inspired by this post that I ran to the fabric store and bought a bunch of cool buttons. Going to see if a boring red cashmere cardigan can be saved form it's frumpy plain buttons by some cool new ones.
Thanks for starting this!

I don't have a lot to add, but wanted to chime in and say how much I'm enjoying (and learning from) this post. I second the idea of changing up your shoes to change the look of an outfit....my booties have really come in handy for that this season!

Rae, I HAVE to thank you for those last two tips --- so freeing!

In my part of the world, jewellery is almost *always* sold as matching sets (necklace and earrings) and so are many salwar-kameez (tunic and pants), lehenga (skirt and top) and saree outfits. I've always tried to break up the outfits, but I NEVER thought of jewellery, sweaters, bags and shoes in the same vein --- silly me! But that is BRILLIANT advice!

- mix patterns
- color block
- hem pants
- purposefully mismatch shoes and bag
- break up sweater and jewelry sets

This is a FANTASTIC thread idea!

1) Add a bright lipstick for spring - orange tones are very on trend right now.
2) See what items you have in your closet that you can wear as a "column of colour".
3) Check out your hubby's side of the closet - is there a tie you can add, a belt, a vest?

1. Stack up colorful bangles.

2. Change the shoes. If you are wearing the skirt with boots go for flats or sandals that you already own though.

3. Change something in your makeup.

4. Use cardigans(outside) or tight tees(inside) to layer your normal tops.

5. Part your hair the other way than you would normally do and see the difference.

6. Get alterations where necessary and where you think could alter your clothes to a new it.

7. Change the way you feel about yourself and build up the confidence and you will be glowing.

Loving this thread! I really think I need to start focussing on my hair as an accessory - it needs a cut (and maybe some colour) and I then need to figure out how to style it day to day! I'm sure it would add 'polish' to my look. Thanks Manidipa :)

Denise, I love the watch and bracelets idea!

Claire, I think I need to learn how to sew! Being short, I have to get pants length and skirts shortened and it would be nice to be able to save money on the alterations. I also like the idea of swapping buttons for nicer looking ones

Oooh! What lovely ideas, ladies!

AJ, those scarf tutorials are BRILLIANT! You've just rescued my sole long narrow scarf.

I SO agree with swapping buttons, a la Claire! And since we don't have thrift shops, only charity donations, I know many of my garment giveaways will not be worn (wrong style for social demographics), so I have NO compunctions about snipping off pretty buttons to reuse.

Speaking of saving bits... SAVE. EVERY. BELT! Even if it's a fabric tie or a length of ribbon. You can wear it with something quite different, add it to a hat or a bag; use the ribbon as trim on a dress, skirt or T-shirt to freshen things up; make your own hair accessories by sewing them into a bow to attach to existing clips and bands and ties...

Saved fabric from sentimental favourites can make not only quilts, but pretty belts, corsages, scarves (cut square, roll and hem), a new watch strap, a bow for your handbag, ruffles for a too-short dress or skirt, a band to extend a too-tiny T-shirt --- just depends what the current in-style accessory and patterns and colours are.

[And Claire, there absolutely needs to be a stretch-every-dollar thread on here too (hint! hint!) --- not just in stylistic terms but also how to extend the life and reduce wear on all garments and accessories. I know there's a whole MINE of ideas to tap into, just scattered across threads...]

I especially love the semi-tuck and daytime clutch ideas from Denise too --- I've tried the latter, must attempt the former. So easy-peasy for a BIG difference!

One more idea: Play with your hemlines each year! Instead of necessarily lopping off a swathe of fabric to shorten, a skirt or dress will stay more versatile if you (or your tailor) only fold and hem. Some seasons, knee-length is in; other times, you can take it several inches above or below...

More:
Use a clutch, even an old one that's a little "evening" but wear it in the day.

Roll your slim leg pants a little shorter above the ankles (caution: heading into non-PPL territory, proceed with caution). Some can pull this off, if so, it's a fast way to look modern.

Stack a bunch of bracelets above your watch.

What a great idea for a thread!

Some more shirt ideas (everyone has shirts, right?):
- semi-tuck your shirt or tee (see picture #1)
- button your shirt all the way to the top and wear a bib/short cluster necklace over it (Angie blogged about buttoning all the way up, it's cool but doesn't work on everyone)
- knot the shirt at the waist and wear it with a pencil skirt. I just love the way these shirts and skirts are styled on the JCrew site: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Navig.....irt.jsp#/6
- Wear the shirt knotted at the waist with pants, maybe flares. This look is more 70s.

Pattern mix wearing the same colors for example a shirt and a sweater. Make it modern by wearing with a pencil skirt or slim leg pants.

If I think of more, I'll add more!

Brilliant ideas! AJ had a thread late last summer where she taught us how to tie our large filmy scarves into a vest!

Any type of sewing you can do can be helpful, too. A change of buttons, from one garment to another, if one is being culled, taking in pants legs to make a more current shape, shortening a skirt. Look what Rae did to her galaxy dress! I have painted buttons with craft paint or nail poish that I had lying around. Sometimes hair worn up and a popped collar can make a huge difference, and that only costs the starch! It's amazing the things you can come up with when all you have to spend is your creativity. How about embelishing a top or cami with some leftover sequins or beads? When there is no money to spend, it helps to be productive re-making and re-mixing so that frustration doesn't set in. Once I bought a second hand bedsheet made of the softest cotton for a dollar and made a beautiful nightgown out of it. It took me two days but I didn't have anywhere to go (or any money to do it with). I wore that thing until it fell apart. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Ok, I hope I totally didn't take your thread in the wrong direction! Sorry! Now you've discovered my *other* love. Saving money (ie personal finance), lol!

Great ideas! Thanks for starting this ManidipaM!

My tips:
1) Fake a PB look with a thin, drapey scarf.

2) Turn a scarf into a vest.
How to: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....e-to-plonk

For others in the same boat, I thought it would be nice to draw up a laundry list of ways to update without any outlay. I owe the idea to Denise (CocoLion), who mentioned skinny jeans and rolled-up sleeves on Claire's epiphany thread today. Una also talked about how certain colours read as 'of the moment' vs 'old-fashioned' in that same thread.

So ladies (and gents), please add your ideas here on making your current wardrobe look...well, 'current', without spending on new clothes or accessories.

To begin with:
(1) From Denise --- roll up (or scrunch?) the long sleeves of shirts and blazers
(2) Go with the skinny pants (also from CocoLion's comment)
(3) Via Una --- pick one colour that is current (orange! cobalt! mint!) and pass over the ones that remind you of a blast from the past (90s stone or 80s pink)
(4) From Una again --- update the more staid neutral elements by making sure they include design or textural interest (case in point: the mock-double-breasted navy blazer with the gold buttons that both Claire and Amy have been rocking of late; Angie recommended it in stripes, which is VERY current, but the navy also has the extra edge from its closure and naval-inspired buttons)
(5) Change your hairstyle! --- Even a free trick like a new updo, a parting on the other side from your habitual one, letting your hair go back to its natural texture or colour (if you curl, straighten or colour) can freshen things up. (6) Check your fit --- for bras, shoes and make-up colours! These change more than we imagine, I find, and not just with age but also with the seasons. ::taking hat off to Claire and Kieran (Fruitful) for sparking these mini-epiphanies::

NOTE: The idea is NOT necessarily to incorporate everything here as a blanket rule across outfits; but just options that can add that little shot of contemporaneity to the rest of your timeless pieces.

Also, please note your caveats and disagreements as well! Debate and discussion always keeps it interesting, no?
