I have a similar brooch and this gives me fresh new ideas. I often use a brooch to secure two ends of a short scarf above my bust. I also use them to close open cardis. I really liked the style and fit of the hat so I removed the flower and went scrounging in my box of old jewelry. I found my paternal grandmothers' onyx and mother of pearl brooch she gave me when I was little. I believe it is from the 1920's or 30's. The stones are set in sterling silver. I pinned it to my new hat and there it has lived ever since. It is a lovely way to add my grandmother back into my life.
