Thanks so much for all the info! I have an appointment Thursday afternoon with a Chinese lady who works quite a bit with athletes. She speaks only slightly more English than I speak Chinese, so lets hope pointing to aches and pains gets the point across!

I saw a documentary once of Chinese surgeons operating with only acupuncture for surgery... Anyways, I didn't believe in it, but was convinced to try it for repetitive stress injury in the arms (typing) and it worked to my surprise. I think you have to go to a Chinese doctor trained in China. Where I live there are a lot of acupuncture places, but they are all Westerners who did like a two-year course. The only thing they can do is *align your chakras.*

Donna - my mum had scleroderma... The Chinese doctor prescribed herbal medicine, not acupuncture... And it worked. For my type 1 diabetes (also autoimmune in terms of cause), he said go see a Western doctor...

... I think the long and short is, I'd only accept Chinese medicine from a real Chinese doctor... and so outside of LA and SF, I wouldn't bother... And in those cities, I think you need a Chinese grandma to find you the doctor...

I went to an acupuncturist after I had symptoms but was not yet diagnosed with systemic sclerosis, aka scleroderma. Three or four $e$$ion$ plus three or four rounds of expensive nasty Chinese herbs did not make an iota of difference other than to my pocketbook. I am not against acupuncture; I just do not think it can do anything for my autoimmune disease or its symptoms like Reynauds and clawlike digits.

Acupuncture can get a baby to turn in utero and I would seek it out if I had chronic pain that Western medicine couldn't treat.

Nebraskim, where do they put the needles when you have PF pain? My physiotherapist tried it once, and it HURT...She put the needles in the arch of my foot. I didn't find any relief from the PF (a chiropractor actually cured it later) and I never wanted to get the needles in the bottom of the foot again...

Maybe there's another way?

Acupuncture works like magic for me, quelling the pain from the plantar fasciitis I've had off and on since the early 1990s. I always have a bit of pain from PF, kind of like background pain. If it starts to get worse, like say escalates from a 1 or 2, to say a 5 or higher, I have a treatment that takes about 45 minutes, and the pain goes away for months.

I had a dislocated shoulder and while I waited for surgery I had acupuncture to help with the swelling and pain. It was wonderful. One day I went in with migraine and mentioned it and they stopped fight then and there. I fell asleep every session.

Wow. I'm pleased to see so many good results.

Good for you, DonnaT, for quitting smoking. So very hard. I had several false starts with quitting. It took getting pregnant with my first child in 1991 to get me to quit permanently. The little window showed a plus sign, and I was a non-smoker;-). Doubt I could have managed if it hadn't been for that.

Excellent point about choosing the right practioner, Peri. My daughter feels like she got lucky with hers. I've done a quick scan of Atlanta practioners' websites. Some are very professional and serious. Some seem so "new age" you can practically smell the incense through the screen.

I did it regularly for awhile. It helped me a lot with a herniated disc, just with the pain and muscle trauma. It also helped me sometimes with stomach issues. I love going have but gotten out of going regularly this year. I want to start back!

But...who you go to matters tremendously, as it does with most things. Before I found my current very gifted acupuncturist I went to one who was not good at all. In general I would advise to stay away from anyone who pushes packages.

I have had acupuncture on injuries to my legs and shoulder. It has been effective both times as part of treatment.

Mine has been sports medicine related. I know others who have been to more authentic chinese acupuncturists for other ailments.

Carter, Tobs is Toby my precious little Maltese...He has had some serious health issues over this past year and I decided not to go the regular pharma route but rather to take him to an alternative medicine vet...I was sent to a most wonderful man who is a vet and a certified acupuncturist...I am just so grateful...
Toby goes in and lies on a table, while I hold him...He is still throughout the treatment which he gets about every 5-6 weeks..As I said, he comes out mellow and relaxed...So pleased with this!!!!!

I have had acupuncture a few times. It worked great for back pain.
Years ago, I had it to help me quit smoking. It worked perfectly. I felt like I had never had the habit. 3 months later, it was like I had never quit. The accupuncture seemed to wear off.

I did eventually quit smoking. It was a battle.

My DH got both trigger point and traditional accupuncture when he was having serious back issues with sciatica. That and physical therapy helped immensely so he did not have to take anymore meds.

Crutcher, I love that it's working for Tobs (dog? cat? lemur?) Does he need it for stress? joint pain? Something else? How in the world do you get an animal to not move while they stick all those little needles in precise spots??

I have only good things to say about acupuncture...My precious little Tobs regularly sees a veternarian acupuncturist...He comes out of the sessions mellow and relaxed..He seems to be feeling great...(THANK YOU) and I attribute a lot of his progress to the non traditional vet medicine that I am doing...
HOpe giving you my perspective from animal meds is ok...I would go myself if I had issues that needed to be addresses...
