Thanks for explaining, Angie. Makes perfect sense. And since I'm watching money, I suspect I may give that one a pass in lieu of something that will be more versatile for my style.
Which leaves me with the blue rib knit and the Michael Kors with the zippered shoulders. Two questions:
1. For those who know the tops in person, should I size up to achieve a fluid fit or is it a roomier cut to begin with?
2. What colour would you suggest in the MK? Would the red be a good one on me?

Do you mean this one, Michelle?

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ha.....ategory-pe

It's gorgeous. And made my tops picks list on the blog - so I do love it. It's sportier than the ones I chose for you first though. You are a dressy gal and the sportier colour blocking is casual and less versatile than a solid pullover. That was the method behind my madness. But I agree with Inge. Fab for more casual Michelle. xo

You make me smile, Michelle:-) Happy to see that more lasses chimed in with brilliant descriptions and suggestions. And Angie has spoken!-)
I'm sorry that the DKNY cowl neck has disappeared, Michelle, but do keep checking back. Sometimes things are returned and pop back up, and this one is definitely worth stalking. I also really really love the Michael Kors cowl neck with shoulder zips for you (just saying).

I didn't get a chance to say it last night, but your purchasing strategy for 2014 makes perfect sense, Michelle. You always were a patient and picky shopper and it has paid off big time. Your wardrobe is filled with excellent items, many of which have become true wardrobe workhorses. The new additions will be equally versatile and impactful, I'm sure. I was also nodding along with everything you wrote about looking stylish being a key component of feeling good. I know from personal experience that this is so true!

Here's to an excellent and super stylish 2014, you are off to a brilliant start!

Angie, what's your take on the colourblocked sweater that Inge linked to? I'm guessing you've seen it in stores...but it doesn't seem to have made your true short list for me?
Looks like the DKNYC charcoal one is gone. Too bad.

No sweater recommendations. Just wanted to say that I totally get the frustration of dressing a body that's seesawing in weight. Except for childhood, my weight has gone up and down all of my life. Ug! It's such a huge step to commit to dressing the body we have. Glad you're doing this.

From Angie's picks I vote for the DKNY cowl, MK zip sweater, and Caslon rib knit. I fear that Halogen cashmere can be hit or miss at times...

Awesome, guys. You've helped so much here!! Now for the decisions! I think the rib knit in the blue is a must, since it's a unanimous choice. I just have to deliberate over the others, as so many sound appealing!
Angie, you're right on the money. Fluidity is my watchword, especially in knits. Not only will it add a "dose of modern," as you put it, but it will mitigate my self-conscious streak. At least a bit. Plus, it's so much more comfy!!

Inge has a great eye. I love all of her picks. The rib knit sweater in Blue Mazarine is a gorgeous colour and has an interesting stitch variation in an triangle shape at the front. The variation is subtle and starts a couple of inches below the neckline at centre front and extends to the side seams at the bottom of the sweater giving a flattering diagonal line. I also think the Michael Kors cowl neck and the Halogen colour block v-neck recommended by both Isabel and Inge are worth trying.

Michelle, your goals sound great. I'm with Caro--I admire your attitude! I Inge's and April's picks, and I don't have any review to offer on the fabrics. But wanted to chime in anyway and applaud your priorities. Shoes are so critical to a look, but also to foot health, body alignment and posture. Your choices are so chic and smart (in all senses of the word).

Michelle, I'm going to do my best at describing each of these.

(Oops, I just noticed that Inge had linked to this one above. I had already written my description so I'll let it stand.)
The first one is a Michael Kors cowl neck with exposed zipper detailing on each shoulder. http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/mi.....ts-_-1_5_C It's offered in a variety of colors, including Midnight (a deep, inky blue); Red Blaze (just what it sounds like, a warm, bright red); and Spring Green (a warm, bright green), along with black and beige. The fit appears generous, with the hemline at the low hip. The neckline is not a true cowl (i.e., not a relaxed, exaggerated turtleneck style) but it's like there's just extra fabric at the neckline that hangs in a soft drape. It's cotton and rayon and does not need to be dry-cleaned. Sleeves are 3/4 -- that may not be warm enough?

And of course Inge linked to my next pick as well -- this may be telling you something about these particular items -- which is the color-blocked Halogen V-neck cashmere. http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ha.....s-_-2_17_A

My third is a Sejour cowlneck (a true cowl, like a stretched-out turtleneck) in the Black/Purple Crown combo http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/se.....s-_-2_25_C This one has a purple base with white flecks and a very subtle black stripe in the knit. It also comes in grey base, but the purple would be so good on you. This one is currently 40% off, so it's very reasonably priced.

Yay for great shoes :) Love your attitude Michelle & your choices. It was wonderful to read about how you are working on dressing the body you have now - such a simple idea but one that is so hard for many of us to carry out.

Inge, I forgot that your idea of hit and run is most people's definition of unbelievably helpful. These are fabulous, fabulous suggestions and I'm already daydreaming about many of them!! From those who have a Nordy's in their backyard and have seen this merchandise up close, I'd be interested in your take. These are steeper price tags for knit ear, which I'm willing to pay for the right quality. Are these made well enough to justify the cost?
Thank you so much, Inge! :)

Michelle, I'm doing a bit of a hit-and-run here because one of my goals is to get to bed reasonably on time this year, and it's about bedtime:-)
I will come back to this thread tomorrow, but wanted to say that I loved reading about your style goals and your focussed approach. Plus, all the purchases you linked to are stunning and so very you. (holding thumbs that those booties will be perfect too).

Here are a few Encore sweaters that I can see working for you (and sorry, you know me, I couldn't stick to only three:-)

- This is my top favourite. A cashmere V-neck colour-blocked sweater. Both the purple and the blue would be stunning on you. The back of the sweater is black, while the sleeves and front are either blue or purple. There's a black trim around the collar, the sleeve cuffs are also black and it has black side panels, which create a slimming effect.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ha.....ategory-pe

- This one was featured in Angie's blog post about layering a blouse under a cowl neck pullover:
http://youlookfab.com/2013/12/.....-pullover/
I could see you rock an outfit like this (more details in Angie's post)
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/dk.....rigin=cate

- A lovely cashmere V-neck that comes in a number of beautiful colours. Could be a very versatile staple. I particularly love the Teal Coral (a tealish green), Blue Mazerine (a mid-blue), Blue Regal (no idea why they call it blue, it's a beautiful purple), Purple Dark (a delicious purple berry colour), and the Red Rumba (cool-toned red) for you.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ha.....sonalizeds

- Cowl-neck jumper with gold-toned zip detailing (subtle) on the shoulders. The Dark Midnight, a gorgeous ink blue, would be stunning on you.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/mi.....3584433?or

- Rib knit sweater in the Blue Mazarine colourway, a bright blue.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ca.....onalizedso

- Zip pocket tunic sweater in Purple Potion Combo. A longer length pullover in a darkish red-purple colour (the cuffs and hem are black, as are the collar rim and top of the shoulder). There are two horizontal zips (subtle), and it has a subtle high-low hemline.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ha.....nalizedsor

Hope this helps.

Coming back to YLF is a genuine style goal for me, as I mentioned in my return post, but I actually have been setting other goals for myself during my hiatus. I thought I'd outline what I've been up to and then lay a plea for help on all of you.

Because of a non-fashion-related experiment undertaken in the middle of the year, I began to truly appreciate the merits of a minimal wardrobe. I loved the feeling of having a small, curated closet that could see me through any situation. My wardrobe could be even smaller but for Canada and it's stringeant climate demands.
A few obstacles stand in my way, though, only one of which is weather related. The other is the continuing seasaw of my weight. You may recall that I dropped a whole ton at one point. Unfortunately, life stress has seen me put it all back on again, a fact that literally drove me to tears when I realized it. One of my style goals for the year is not to let this reality hold me back. There is no chance at all that I'll take charge of my life if I'm not feeling good about myself, and I now accept that looking stylish is a key component of feeling good. I simply can't feel confident in myself if I'm sloppily or frumpily dressed. And using fluctuating weight as an excuse for neglecting my sartorial choices is, frankly, nonsense. So no more of that.
This necessarily involves making a few purchases to make sure everything is up to snuff, but frugality is one of my style goals now, too. I'll be making fewer purchases, preferrably completed at sales prices. This is something I have been pretty good at so far over the past year. My years on YLF have made me *much* more discerning, so I have a much easier time whittling down my lists and focusing on things that will get a lot of wear.
Ylf also helped me develop a few guidelines. I have adopted Angie's rule about not buying black items that lack texture, with only one exception that I'll get to later. This has served me very well in recent months. The only pair of black skinnies I purchased are a fabulously comfortable faux-suede. When I finally found a pair of slipper flats, they were black sequens:
http://www.saksfifthavenue.com.....4446515370
When I got a new pair of black pumps, I chose one in patent with a pearl-coloured bow.
http://www.berenshoes.com/Zooe.....38_BLK_PT/
I've decided at long last to expand my shoe budget, since my feet are absolutely impossible to fit and need the attention. I was starting to really feel the limitations of a bad shoe wardrobe, and Angie's advice about focusing on shoes, handbags and hairdues finally came home to roost. I assure you, though, that my new "on sale" policy comes very much in handy for this facet of my style journey! :p

The one exception to the textured black rule comes to a pair of booties I'm waiting on as we speak. They're everything I want in a versatile bootie, and if they work the process of leaving the house will be so, so much easier. I may even duplicate them in cranberry, if the stars align:
http://www.zappos.com/munro-american-robyn

Another goal involves re-embracing pants, which I was neglecting in my dress phase. To that end I'm breaking out my wool-crepe dress pants a little more ovten, making a lot of use of my grey denim, and loving the fun of a pair of slouchy burgundy skinnies I just found. They're complete with snaps at the bottom so I can relax the skinniness of the silhouette, and they're textured, and they're fun, and I'm in love. :)

For the other handful of purchases I've made, I try to stick to woven blouses and dresses unless I have a compelling reason to embrace a knit. These can include trendy elements married with a great colour:
http://www.kiyonna.com/plus-size-clothing/13121805

Or extreme comfort, substantial fabric and mad usefulness for my climate:
http://sexyplusclothing.com/pr.....ize-tunic/

But this brings me to my final style goal: stocking up on knitwear. After all, 'tis the season, the assortment is supposedly excellent (though not here), and I am Canadian. :)

And this, my lovely ladies, is where you come in. May I request your assistance to help me choose no more than three sweaters from the Encore section at Nordstrom? I hate cardigans and haven't converted, so I'm sticking with pullovers. Cowl, scoop and v necks are my favourites, though any not-too-high neck style will do. Ditto sleeves. I'm open to all patterns and hemlines, though would prefer to stear clear of cropped lengths.Any help you can offer me would be so, so much appreciated. :)

How about you guys? What have your style goals been, and how are you doing at sticking to them?
