Debby - I also use the Angie knot that Joy mentions, as well as the Basic Loop and the Twist and Pull from this fun video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LYAEz777AU

In #2, I just wrapped around a couple of times, and tied the ends with very little remaining and tucked them under.

Debby, there are so many wonderful scarves and ways to tie them that you can cover any occasion. There are lots of tutorials ontying scarves on the internet if you just Google ways to tie a scarf, or something like that. One of my favorite ways Angie uses:
http://youlookfab.com/2009/04/.....ngie-knot/
You said that you like brooches. You might watch at art festivals or local crafters co-ops for leather or felted ones that work well on sweaters. I found some that are flowers.

Thank you all! I'll go back to the closet and play a little more.

Rae, I can try a necklace but the collar on one sweater is pretty bulky, and may end up to be a choker!

Kathy, I like your idea of rolling the sleeves and also confirming dangly earrings. :)

Caro, I'd forgotten about cuffs. Thanks for the reminder! That will give more heft instead of getting lost.

qpswan -- Thank you for posting photos! I don't know if I have any Irish jewelry, just rhinestones or marcasite (which sort of looks like what you posted). I'd need to find faux fur that wasn't too bulky, but maybe there is some out there.

Sarah -- Thank you also for the photos. How do you tie your scarves? I especially love #2. Both are a beautiful blue and I love the pattern in the first photo. Most of my scarves are the long skinny kind, but I have a few square ones I don't know how to tie.

I wear scarves all the time with my sweaters, and they definitely vary in their dressiness, from casual (#2), to dressy (#1), depending on the material, edges (raw vs. finished), etc.

My first thought was Scottish/Irish jewelry - something simple and substantial.

Then I thought of Ralph Lauren and faux fur scarves.

Good luck - I look forward to the photos!

Our winters are pretty mild, but I like to layer under my sweaters, like a collared shirt with a fun pattern like gingham or stripes or a complementary color. Let the bottom hem peak out below, and roll the sleeves. For a turtle neck, you could do a long pendant or like you said fun dangly earrings. I don't think scarves are overly dressy and are a great way to accessorize too!

Hmmm... maybe a chunky necklace that exhibits the same "heft" as the cable of the sweater? Or you could focus on a statement belt or statement bag that would make jewelry less necessary.

Although we're having a lovely last gasp of summer here, it's going to be very cold, very soon. Because I am one of those people who is always cold anyway, I live in layers and bulky knits from October to April.

This has got me thinking about how best to accessorize, say, a cabled turtleneck sweater, or a bulky cardigan. I have a plum pullover with a fold-down turtleneck that is too bulky for a necklace. I love brooches of all kinds, but since the T-neck has a cable pattern, a brooch might be too dainty. I'm not sure if a scarf is too dressy. Maybe it depends on the material? So, should I focus on earrings and bracelets and leave the sweater itself plain? If earrings, are studs or hoops or dangling earrings better?

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!
