Greeneyes, for the kinds of accessories you like, you should check out Etsy. Mayapple recommended it recently; they have a lot of unique stuff. I browsed through and found a lot of earrings I like. They have tons of pendants, bags etc. in all styles...

Where do I begin on the topic of acessories. Start by reading this entry:

http://youlookfab.com/2006/06/.....cessories/

I include handbags and specs as accessories so go over the RHS of the YLF site and browse through the accessory category. You have received wonderful advice from Nicole, Maya and Antje.

I strongly believe that one’s hair is an accessory. Your accessories need to work with your hair AND your fashion persona. Choose a few accessories and make a statement with them. Don’t feel that you have to try all types of accessories. I have purposely chosen not to wear earrings or bracelets. I make a strong statement with my hair, specs, necklace and handbag instead. These items consistently form part of my look everyday (or I’d be bald I suppose). You’ll start to see the definition of a style come through once you’ve decided on its components.

Also, there are casual accessories and dressier ones and you should have both.

Oh thanks for this super help!

I have been picking up some great ideas from this website, and am breaking out of my usual neutral shades and am trying to introduce some splashes of colour eg turquoise polo, yellow beads, purple pumps into my wardrobe!
i think i'm quite boho in my style- i love one off pieces and unuusal items i find but my problem is putting them togther to make a great outfit and this is wear i think accessories would really help. i tend to be quite casual in my dress. I've been looking for a bold and awesome pendant necklace for ages now (years in fact) somethning that is unusual and rare but also quite verstile and that will sit close around my neck and complete the look. I'm quite tall and very slim with a petite face and featues so chandelier earrings often dwarf me. I have some chunky rattling bangles thati enjoy wearng together in bronze and golds. never wear belts or scarves and usually wear either a small a gold quilted vintage bag with chain or a larger battered soft brown leather motorcyle slouch bag over shoulder.

Greeneyes, what kinds of accessories do you like? Might be best to start with that. I, for instance, accessorize mostly with earrings (bold, colorful, funky) and scarves. I never wear necklaces - somehow I think they look bad on me, although this probably means I haven't found a good style for me. But since I love earrings (and own lots), I'm also not very motivated to look for necklaces, since as Mayapple pointed out, that would be too much anyway.
So, do you like earrings, necklaces, belts, bracelets, scarves, bags... ? And what is your style in general? E.g. casual or formal, urban or boho, funky or classic... etc. We'll all be happy to try and help with suggestions, but it'll be good to know more.

These are the rules I've heard. Don't know how true they are:

-keep your jewelry in proportion to your body. But let me just say I hate piddly delicate jewelry and I'm petite, so I break this rule constantly and it doesn't bother me. Maybe I'm just delusional.

-wear one main piece at a time. Don't wear big chandelier earrings AND a chunky necklace. One or the other. I also can't stand mixing gold and silver, but that's just personal.

-bags also need to be in proportion, but this is another rule I break out of necessity.

-keep purse fabrics season appropriate, i.e. no raffia in winter.

-someone somewhere once said that your bag doesn't have to match your shoes, which eventually turned into you must NEVER match your bag and your shoes because it makes you BORING and "matchy matchy" (it amazes me that as a society we haven't come up with a better way of describing an overly calculated attempt to match, but anyway). I don't think this is necessarily true. If the rest of your outfit is very colorful and playful, and you have black shoes on, go for a black bag. Why not?

-I agree with Nicole about refreshing accessories. Unless it's something like a wedding band, I think it's better (and a lot more fun) to mix and match.

I keep my accessories to a minimum. I always wear a bold eye catching pendant around my neck. The same way I try not to wear the same outfit twice within a few weeks, I try not to wear the same pendant with the same top more than once every few weeks. I don't keep a flow chart or anything, but I just always try to come up with new combinations.

Hey!
Just wondering if there are any general tips on how to accessorise to complete an outfit. I understand the importance of accessories- can make or break an oufit, turn one from bland into head turning and keep old wardrobe staples up to date but i'm useless at it! i have some nice tops and items to wear with nice cut jeans etc but when it comes to finishing the look off i haven;t a clue, so just end up waering no jewellery at all or, at best, slinging on the same old bag. Can't help feeling somehow i'm missing out on that wow! factor. Any secrets to share??

Great website btw!
