I'm very boring when it comes to this: I have a cranberry wool coat and I wear charcoal gray accessories with it (my scarf is actually gray with cream tassels).

I think Lisa has a good method. With my red coat I tend to wear neutral scarves/hats/gloves as well. I'm fine with adding one color, the way you are doing with the gloves, but after that, I would stick with neutrals for everything else. I think that a red coat plus yellow gloves plus a turquoise scarf (or whatever color) just ends up looking like there is too much going on at once. If the coat were black, brown or grey I would definitely work two other colors into the accessories, but although I know there is a big "red as neutral" camp here, in my world it is a big, bold color and having more than one other bright color competing with it seems like overkill.

I have a yellow coat. I pair it with the same color scarf and gloves (navy) and similar shades of hat and bag (both grays). I try to keep the color combinations to a max of 3 with my colored coats, too many additional colors to the coat and I may start to look like a crayola crayon.

Just wanted to chime in that they have all those pashmina scarves cheap and plenty all over, I used to buy a lot of them when I used to work in the city (lunch breaks in winter, hurrah!)... They have all the colors imaginable (I know they're not even close to the nordstrom scarves but they're great for switching things around!)

Maya - I love the sound of chartreuse with the red. Think you'll round out with cream beret/scarf?

Here's a question for you all - do you guys use your 'regular' scarves for winter coat wear vs. owning another set of 'winter' scarves? Even if they aren't part of your indoor outfit - as long as the 'regular' ones provide enough coverage/warmth?

I love this topic as I have stepped up to more coat variety and it IS confusing which scarf and gloves to grab depending on my bag and the part of my outfit that shows.

In fact, I was wistful last night about old simplicity - one winter coat (dark and neutral), one primary handbag (dark and neutral), one pair of winter boots (black), one set of gloves (neutral), etc. Going out the door was a no-brainer - which is actually good for 7:00 a.m.

To clarify, I am not asking what colors work with red. I've been wearing red since before the earth cooled and have a pretty good grasp on the color combinations I like. But I can't have all my accessories (hat, scarf, bag, and gloves) be all different colors, nor can I have them match. I think it might be easier for you, Angie, because you have much more variety. I have lots of scarves, but most of them do not work with this coat.

I went ahead with the chartreuse gloves. I just think they are too fab to pass up. I have a cream hat which I can use for now. I think I should go with the gray bag and maybe my black and gray scarf. It will be boring since I love switching things up, but soon it will be puffer weather anyway so I'll have time to fund alternatives.

Red feels like a neutral color to me; you can successfully pair a lot of colors with it. With red I like to pair white/ivory/cream, black, gray for neutrals (EDIT: also deep browns!); turquoise and plum for colors.

Hmm, yeah, I don't do animal prints. I prefer graphic, abstract prints. A gray and black houndstooth would be nice, but I'm pushing my luck with such a specific request...

I tuck all my scarves right up against my neck and inside the coat collar. Such is life with a giraffe neck.

I like to wear black, cream, citron, mustard yellow, apple green and purple scarves with my red Armani coat. I also wear a red animal print scarf and geometric prints in the above colours with the red coat. You might like a black and white animal print too.

I have yellow and black gloves - both work very well. When I go colour on the scarf and gloves, I use a cream or black bag. It's quite simple really.

This red S&K coat is my first colored winter coat so I am coming across some new challenges that require YLF wisdom.

In the past, accessorizing my neutral coats was easy. I could get just about any color accessories and they would work. And they could all be different colors and it was no big deal because they were in such small doses. A white hat, black and white coat, red gloves, and a blue scarf looked completely fine.

Now I'm not sure.

How do you coordinate winter accessories and how does having a colored coat affect things?

I didn't think I'd need a scarf with this coat, but I suppose my neck must be longer than I thought because the collar is still too short for warmth. I hate to cover it up though, so I thought a neckwarmer or something I can just tuck underneath would be good. But what color should I look for? I went looking for gloves today and I LOVED how chartreuse looked with this coat. I didn't buy them yet, but if I did, I guess the scarf should be more neutral and basic. Or maybe a neutral pattern?

And hats? Yet another thing to consider. I have a white one but probably should have more. (Yes, I decided I need a hat regardless of what it does to my hair--I'm just too cold without one).

What about bags? Based on Angie's input I can get gunmetal or yellow. I think my ultimate decision hinges on what coordinates best with my winter accessories--which all revolve around this coat.

Thoughts?
