I have a ton of black accessories -- boots, shoes, bags, belts -- along with black being the backbone of my wardrobe. My other core neutral, that only comes out in spring and summer, is navy, and I've amassed a healthy complement of accessories there as well.

The ones I consider Angie-style complements are the smaller/rarer colours. I have cordovan (loafers and belt); cognac (2 sandals, belt, basket purse); red (several shoes, recent HEWI mini backpack and belt); metallic (pewter shoes, black-and-gold shoes, mixed braided belt); leopard ballet flats and cardi; mint loafers. I will happily use one or two of these as the only accent to a black or black-and-white outfit.

I have slightly larger collections incorporating other clothing items that I think of more as capsules. The original predates YLF; it is all the gold and glitter items I kept handy for the years I sang in a Christmas extravaganza, and now enjoy for festive wear. It includes embellished vests, a duster coat, and those gold paisley pants (oh my, I just realized how very Gentlewoman that is). Then there is the turquoise capsule that comes out for Fake Spring (my late winter) and True Spring.

I'm not sure if red (sweaters and shirts) counts as a capsule because it is so extensive, almost my third neutral. And I don't think Breton stripe tops or pinstripe shirts fit here, because they were Essentials when I did my list last year, and nothing has changed.

This has been very interesting. I AM a matchy-matchy person but sometimes I cannot get the exact match so it is more tonal or "gradient". Since I am lazy about my bags I don't swap out that much, so mostly the same tan bag for now, but can match bag and shoes in the case of red and cobalt.
Otherwise, a colour in the print of the top or dress is picked out by the shoes and the earrings. I am sorry I don't have my wardrobe in Finds ( to do so will be lots of work making custom Finds).
I do work hard to get the colour shades the same if I can, which is different to you La Ped.
Sorry might have gone a bit overboard selecting photos below!

FashIntern -- I think I gravitate toward colour families rather than individual colours because I’m not a matchy-matchy person at heart. I’m more likely to wear a lilac piece and a blush piece together, rather than two lilac pieces.

OK, finally have a chance to follow up with this lengthy thread!

Aquamarine -- Yeah, the red breton is several years old. Such a perfect true/cool red, I’m glad I snapped it up!

TG -- You know, I’ve never been systematic or intentional about making sure I have certain types of items in certain colours. I really only wear neutral bottoms, so I’d be highly unlikely to add pants or skirts to any of these capsules except the Earth Tones family. I’m not a big bag person at this point, so I don’t collect those in lots of colours, but I can see the appeal of bags-as-accents for sure (hence the little lilac canvas circle bag). With big-ticket items like outerwear, I’m mostly focused on longevity and function, so colour takes a back seat to quality/fit/features. I always like the idea of J Crew’s colourful wool coats (the Lady Day and the Stadium, etc), but have yet to find one in the right colour for me.

Nemosmom -- Between my personality and lifestyle, it is so easy for me to end up in all dark colours. Realizing that I could add lightness through tonal variation was a real breakthrough moment for me.

Gretchen -- My guess is that it’s very user-dependent. There are certain categories (like pants) where I’ll always reach for my neutrals. Even almost-neutrals, like burgundy and plum, feel wrong for pants. I can enjoy colourful pants on others, and not worry about covering that base in my own colour capsules. For me, the core is pretty much just tops, accessories and footwear.

Taylor -- I think you have your palette nailed!

Katerina -- You are SO skillful with colour combinations and creating a balance between colour and neutral in an outfit.

Kathie and Bonnie -- Awesome red complements!

Angie -- You do this so masterfully, it’s really an inspiration.

Vix -- Those berry-red shades are smashing on you!!

Smittie -- I totally get the appeal of tonal combos. I have a few of these myself. Blush/red/burgundy and mint/sage/olive come to mind. Like you, I find that as long as I’m consistent with my palette I can create lots of nice tonal outfits without much hassle, and it’s mostly a matter of sticking to the shades I really like and avoiding the ones that feel “meh” to me.

Lisap -- Yes, your capsule-dressing posts have been a source of inspiration for me. I remember your black/white/pale blue outfits from (I think) last spring/summer.

Sal -- I think you’re a naturally eclectic dresser! Having a wide variety of patterned pieces allows you to combine lots of different colours and neutrals.

Joy -- My capsules are somewhat seasonal too. I embrace red in colder weather, pastels when the days are longer, and earth tones as the days are getting shorter. There’s a lot of psychology and emotion involved.

SarahD8 -- Envisioning complements as colour families has been really helpful to me because I don’t necessarily want to dress head-to-toe in one matching colour, and I often prefer colours that “echo” each other rather than direct matches. Like you, I have certain colour preferences for tops and others for bottoms. I don’t do belts either and I’m a pragmatist regarding bags. My jewelry is almost all silver. So adding colour is a very intentional process. I have to go out of my way to make it happen. I really had to give myself permission to add fun colours, and in order to do that I had to come up with a system, lol. I may lean a little bit towards “organized” on the “organized emotional” shopping spectrum.

Suntiger -- I think that makes sense. Sometimes there are colours we love, but only in small doses. I actually don’t love wearing swaths of mint, blush, lilac, but am very happy having smaller pieces in those colours.

SF -- I think you have a truly mix-and-match wardrobe! I like the idea of a very small, intentional black complement.

Kate -- Ah, the pickle colour! DS has a couple of tops in that shade (acid olive?) that he really enjoys. He’s the one in our house who bats for Team Sour Brights. ;)

Shevia -- That makes sense to me. I’ve managed to avoid metal complements by having a total aversion to yellow gold and a feeling that rose gold is a bit too trendy. Silver and pewter all the way for me.

Gigi -- Sounds like your capsules really give you a lot of variety and bang for the buck. Good luck finding comfy shoes!

Greyscale -- Love the idea of neon green! My son (5) and my niece (8) would definitely approve. Black plus neon seems to be a big thing with the youth right now. And I'm pretty sure you were part of my inspiration for adding lilac and blush; I don't think Ithey would have occurred to me as accents for black without seeing your WIWs.

Karen13 -- Thinking back to your WIWs, I’m betting you have an emerald/jade and a sky/aqua capsule in the making…

Suz -- So interesting looking at your collections. Your colourful items must be workhorses because I definitely associate you with certain red and berry pieces. I love the idea of amping up the lilac element, but maybe it doesn’t have quite the same punch as the reds when paired with blue/white/silver/grey? It gives you a low contrast accent rather than a high contrast one.

Okay, this was brilliant. I went through my Finds and made a bunch of collections -- not just accessory complements but also including clothing items in my key colours. And lo and behold, I discovered that I really don't have enough colour! My red capsule is pretty good but not a real complement since I don't have a red bag or belt (i.e. no accessory other than scarf and shoes -- so adding one might make it work better.)

I would like to add more lilac/ purple/ plum to my closet, whether via clothing or accessory complements doesn't really matter.

I would like to add more berries and deep pinks to my wardrobe -- I hardly have any and it is one of my most flattering tones.

Sheesh! All I have is blue, grey, white, silver!!

To go along with the black, I have a small pink/lilac complement (two tees and an oxford shirt). I've been trying to collect a second complement with a few things in a color that's somewhere between neon citron and pastel lime, but it's hard to find the right color that's a good tone for my skin. A few inspirations in Finds.

I've stuck mostly to tees for these because they're cheap and easy, but footwear or bags could work well. And for the neon citron, I can be bolder with colors not near my face.

I also have a sizable collection of white shirts and tees by now. Oh, and I have a shiny silver complement for parties.

It sounds like our wardrobes are quite similar. I too have a lot of dark neutrals, and when I add colors outside of that, they are usually earth tones, which seem to blend in pretty seamlessly with the neutrals. I am trying to develop some color complements, though:

1. Ballet pink. I have some pink flats and a scarf that I love. I would like to add a purse, but finding the exact shade in a style I like has proven to be difficult.

2. Mustard. I have a midi skirt and some sandals in mustard. Would love a purse as well.

3. Leopard print. I have lots of leopard: three scarves, one pair of sandals, two belts, and a tote. I would like to add a pair of leopard flats.

4. Red. I have a red short-sleeve tee, a red sweater, red booties (uncomfortable, ugh), and a red beret. Would love a red purse and comfortable red shoes.

I see from writing this up that my complements generally consist of an accessory (belt or scarf), a pair of shoes, a piece of clothing, and a purse. This gives me variety within each complement. I do like to wear two items of the same complement at one time, because I feel that it draws the outfit together.

I think my complements are mostly metal based. So I have gold based hoops that I wear with bags and shoes with gold hardware and silver for silver. I don't feel completely put together mixing metals, unless it is very intentional with a mixed metal piece (which is not to say I don't ever do it, but not usually). I also choose colored hoops to tie in an odd color. Interesting responses and I am going to think about this more later.

My system, if I have one, is very similar to La Ped's. I have a base of neutrals that I wear—black, white, mid-tone to charcoal grays, navy, and olive, plus smaller amounts of plum and burgundy.

I have a tiny reddish complement that I wear with my neutrals for a pop of color. I particularly like it with my plum and olive items.

Recently, I've also built out a small sour yellow complement. The best way I can describe the color is that it is pretty much the interior color of a Mount Olive dill pickle. I admit this is not a flattering color on me when I wear it up by my face,—new velvet tee, I'm talking about you— but I find this color irresistible. Most of the items are accessories, but not all. I love this pickle color with all my olives and have absolutely no problem dressing in the full pickle!

I now also have a fairly sizeable brown capsule that I have been building over the past couple of years. At first it was just a complement, since brown items were not so easy to find. I really added a lot to it this past year as brown items were more readily available than ever. I was even able to score a brown wool midi coat, brown wide legged pants, and a couple of sweaters. Full-on brown requires more color as a complement, while I love wearing my brown boots and new patent leather brown bag with white, olive, navy and gray.

Posted on the other thread about the complements, but I realized my accessory complements are mostly not the same as my main colors! I built a mustard complement with jewelry, scarves, and mules-but have no mustard clothing yet for example.

This is a very interesting and instructive thread. Thanks for sharing your process, La Ped. I really like your way of conceptualizing complements as not just individual colors but also color groupings (pastels, earth tones, etc.). I think that could be a way to get more use out of items while one is still building out complements focused on individual colors. You've got me thinking in Venn diagrams of complements.

torontogirl, I really like the way you laid out what items you have and what you could add in different colors. I'd like to do a similar exercise for myself.

One thing I find is that there is no "universal formula" for complements for me. It strongly depends on the specific color. There are some colors that I mainly want to wear on the top half, others I'd wear either top or bottom, and some that I'd only want to use as small accessories/jewelry or as a minor color in a print.

Unlike some others, I conceptualize color complements as including both clothing and accessories. That's probably because I'm not much of a bag person and I don't wear belts at all.

La Ped, you've had me inspired all day I went through my wardrobe and identified the following opportunities to build some good complements:

True Red - have a crew sweater, a striped sweater, a striped tee, a printed scarf - could add a red sneaker

Plum/Deep Cool Burgundy - have a v-neck sweater, a purse, a favorite nail polish - could add a print scarf and/or a shoe/bootie

Blush - have a fluid blouse, tee, printed scarf (2), moto - could add a casual sweater, shoe, purse

Cognac - have a belt and tote - could add a sandal (I like this in summer to 'lighten up')

Cool Medium Brown - have a printed scarf and taupe bootie (coordinates rather than matches) - could add a sweater and a tall boot

Merlot/Lighter Burgundy - have a velvet pant and a fave nail polish - could add a top, purse, printed scarf

Dusty Lavendar (wild card!) - have printed shorts and Chucks - could add a scarf

This is a brainstorming list and finds are just for ideas - I'm not planning to get all this stuff haha! But at least now if I spot something I know if/where it will fit Thanks for starting this thread; this was so fun and I've learned so much from you and the whole group today :)

I like color and neutral capsules as a way to make it easy to get dressed and to bring in new-to-me colors.

I vary my neutrals by season, but not strictly. I try for a column of a light neutral and a column of a dark one for hot, cold and transitional weather. Real colors are something I wear with neutrals, including accessories. The colors and neutrals do not need to be matchy if they look ok together.

I don’t exactly do it - except with neutrals. I like the way you do it La Ped - small doses can add such a fresh touch to dark neutrals in winter - and let’s face it / dark neutrals are a great practical choice on many days!!

I have
- cognac bag and two matching shoes and one belt
- navy boots, bag, two tees, one sweater
- three pairs off white shoes, one belt
-camel/ caramel/gold coatsx2, jacket, sweater, cardigan, bag, shoesx2
- soft grey - two jackets

Aside from that lots of black, bit of denim, few brights (red, coral, pink, jades) and quite a bit of pattern. And a few random colours such as an olive jacket and a blush tee.

It kind of works but I am not sure why.

I've been using colour capsules and complements forever. The actual colours change over the years, but I've had great little packages of pale blue (a current fav) , orange, yellow, turquoise, silver, gold , white , etc etc. I am sort of interested in trying a red capsule as I already have a good red bag, a beautiful red/pink/cream scarf and a red blazer. Could be talked into red loafers if the right pair appeared.

You are talking my language.
I love the 'colour complement' method of wardrobe building. I have realized that wearing the right combination of colours together is what makes me happiest.

What I've noticed is that I prefer gradients of the same colour together. I find the use of gradients give off a deliberate look that I find soothing. I also find that thinking in terms of gradients makes shopping a whole lot easier - I can say to myself "I am shopping for this gradient today" and pick up a matched top and bottom. (I am coming to understand that I'm an outfit person, rather than a mix-n-match person.)

So here are my main clothing gradients:

Berry gradients.

Green gradients.

Blue gradients.

Grey gradients.

Purple gradients (nothing in this category yet-might fit under 'berry')

I like to keep top/bottom in the same gradient.

I'm going to try to keep the accessories or anything with a small visual footprint in a neutral. So bags/shoes/belts in:

black

navy

tan

white

This all sounds very analytical, but the reality is that I just sort of fell into it as I was building up my skirt capsule.

You'll notice there's not much room for pattern in my gradient-based wardrobe. That's true. I haven't really thought that through.

Hi La Pedestrienne --

So glad you shared the visual results of your strategy -- suits you so well!

I have a neutrals-heavy wardrobe and prefer tonal or low-contrast-with-each-other colors. I overlap with your buying strat to some degree but end up down a different road.

I'm a print-lover and have a lot that incorporate my base neutrals and core colors. Prints are also a key way I keep from getting bored with my most flattering shades -- love finding a new combo.

Sometimes I like to pick out the "extra" shades in prints and buy solid pieces in those. Last year my shades of blush and deeper greens were around and they fit in easily with what I had, and I found an off-neutral blue-grey summery bag, so....

Alternatively, I go through phases where I get a bug up my butt about wanting to add or expand a color range. This year it was red-violets (wine, berries, plums) and let's just say retailers and I have very different understandings of those terms but I found some winners and overdyed items to get there my own $%# self!

I've learned via time that for me, shoes = dark neutrals or near-neutrals (wine) in cold weather and cool metallics or skin tones in warm weather so I generally don't add color there.

Grabbed existing collages to semi-illustrate!

#1: Low-Key Neutrals with Prints, Barely Boho results
#2: Berries Plums Red Violets with best Pantone colors (matched to RL fan not online chart)

NICELY DONE, La Ped. You are another who has put in the time and thought, and reaped the reward. Well done :)

Taylor, I think you intuitively pull together complements and capsules.

I can't help but think in capsules and complements because I am VERY drawn to colours and remixing them in all sorts of ways in outfits. I'm constantly matching things up in my head - like trying to solve a puzzle so that the pieces fit - so I guess that's how my brain works. As a result I have many, many neutral and non-neutral complements.

I build complements because they are a effective styling tool. Here are some easy to follow posts on the subject.,

Great post! Last year, I decided to focus on building a red capsule- most finds below, except for a couple belts (and yes, even readers, because why not.) If I find the right items, I'll be adding a red bag and red fashion sneakers to this capsule. And then, by complete happenstance, I started a yellow capsule with shoes and a bag. Shades of yellow don't love me as much as I love them, so I probably won't be adding scarves to this collection, but I might consider a belt. I wear the reds year round, but the yellow seems to be spring/summer.
