Thanks to Mo's example, I decided to measure myself and was pleased to discover that in addition to losing 3kg over the last 3 weeks I have lost over an inch off my waist and an inch off my hips. So I'm 33-27-37. This is pretty good for me and almost all my clothes are fitting again. I am only .2kg off my goal weight but could try to go down another 1.5 or so after that (any more would probably to too little for my age and frame)

I do have 2 garments it would be nice to fit into, but generally want to concentrate on fitness and strength. I did some cardio over the last few weeks, including a 4km fun run, but neglected weights and would like to do 2 weekly session of that, 3 cardio and one flexibility and/or core strength class.

Since Una posted I have joined the gym again and made an apt with a physio to check whether I should be running. I am trying to decide between doing a long distance ocean swim in Feb as I have done the last few years or aim for a half marathon. There have been increased shark attacks this year and I am a bit nervous of going over a mile out to sea!

All the best to Una and all who posted! Thanks for the challenge

We should start a fit club to support each other and have a goal get fit by New Years. With the upcoming holidays and cooler weather, I know I have to work out extra hard to lose my last 5-7 lbs. I've lost 25 lbs. through Weight Watchers and lots of exercise so I know that exercise is key.

I bit the bullet and hired a personal trainer. It was enormously helpful. He was able to point out ways to maximize my returns on fitness, pinpoint trouble areas, and keep me from hurting myself. I did it for about 8 months, and wish I were STILL doing it!

Oh, yay! I'm not alone! I love you guys!

I will try to do a Monday thread to see how we're doing.

As for me, I'm not so focused on numbers as on size and fitness. I don't actually weigh much more than I used to but I'm a size bigger and a lot less in shape. I still rock climb, so my arms are the one thing that are fit, but I need more core building and endurance. I'm going to start skiing with the dog again now that we have snow, which will be good for both of us and is also just fun. And I'm going to do the exercise bike. We belong to a gym but I'm one of those people who likes doing the REAL thing and can't stand the treadmill or exercise bike, so that part is hard.

And changing my eating habits has got to happen. It's not that I eat a lot or badly, but I know I could make some small changes that would make a big difference. Krishnidoux, adding the veggies is a great idea! I enjoy food and the social aspects of eating, so I have to balance that with making the right choices.

YAY!

I read "Younger Next Year," which was a good jumpstart to better choices. I don't ever read (much less endorse) the sort of parenting or fitness books that make you want to jump off a cliff or open a vein, and this book was helpful without making me feel hopeless.

I now go to the gym 4 to 5 days a week and have a simple weights and cardio routine. I have also improved my eating habits by making small changes. A year later, I have lost weight along the way and I do look a lot better (and it is a lot more fun to shop, for sure!) but the plan was simply to be healthier, and to not be old and weak. Old, I can do nothing about, but the weak part is within my control.

For me, the first goal was simply to GO. And, go back. Eventually, to get into a routine. It took some doing to figure out the time of day that worked best for me, and I did hire a trainer to help me figure out what to do without hurting myself.

Funny, I just joined a fitness centre and am trying out Zumba and yoga. As my FB page says, Zumba is not for sissies. I completed two half marathons last year and didn't work as intensely as the Zumba (I am a walker, not runner)

Anyway, it will take a bit more effort to go this time of year, birthdays, the holidays but I think it de-stresses me, and I need that, this time of year kills me

Go Una! You can do this and I will be joining you.

I love Krishnidoux's suggestions - I always feel better when I try to base my diet on veggies, (paired with protein and good fats); a lot falls into place when I do.

Over the last couple of months I have been exercising and eating well - some of the time. When I'm stressed I fall off the wagon. Super stressed lately, I've gotta drive the kids to Sydney (about 10-12 hours of driving if you didn't take breaks) AND get us all ready to attend a wedding there. So I ate heaps of chocolate, slept even less than normal, and let 2 weeks go without exercising!

When I am exercising, I do Bodyrock.TV workouts (12-20 minute bodyweight workouts that veer into HIIT territory). Also a bit of yoga, and dancing. And all at home

I think it's a great time of year to start or change up a fitness routine. I did this last year and managed to lose a couple pounds over the holidays instead of gaining! Just this weekend my husband and I made a twice weekly date at the gym, starting this week. And it helps counteract the dreary weather blues for those of us heading into gloomy days.

It's exciting to think about gaining strength, fitness, and ease with your body! Especially going into winter, when all I personally want to do is hibernate with some cheese, bread, and soup close at hand :). Just doing something active every day seems to help me with the winter blues, and gives me more energy. I will be following along and rooting for you!! It may be dark and gray for weeks at a time, but by golly we can still have some zip and spring in our step, you know?

Hi! I want to chime in!

I am not seeking to lose any weight, actually for me it's the opposite. But I wanted to share something I stumbled upon.

Try this: making the base of what you eat green vegetables. Don't restrict amounts, and do by all means eat all the other things, except eat it with a full plate of *green* *leafy* vegetables (prefer them over roots). For example: broccoli, leaks, Brussels sprouts, green beans, spinach, cabbage, Kale...

The idea is not to restrict anything: it's to add. Add vegetables, lots of them. Raw and cooked.

Some time ago I was eating my breakfast which consisted that day of coffee with cream, a piece of bread with peanut butter, a yoghurt and some fruit when I felt like a dry overfill, suddenly it was all too sweet. This made me pounder. I realized a lot of what I ate contained hidden sugars. Closing my eyes over that fact did not make it go away. I wondered what would happen if I switched the bulk of what I ate from processed starch to vegetables.

Here I want to say that I considered myself already pretty healthy, being active, eating "well", in a varied way, with good portions, already with a little bit of veggies and lots of fresh fruits, taking vitamins etc.

Yet I tried. Not cutting anything else out, I ate the veggies until I felt full at every meal. I even tried some in the morning! Imagine, Brussels sprouts for breakfast. YIKES! But I also ate the bread and the butter and the nuts etc. Just added the vegetables, lots of them.

I discovered some veggies tended to make me gag, so I envisioned my plate of veggies like a medication, ate it slower, but swallowed it all. I tried them sprinkled with olive oil and lemon juice, Wafu dressing, warm, cold, cooked, raw...

I went through a real detox! The first week had its unpleasant moments. One day I started to sneeze uncontrollably. The next, I felt nauseated. In the first few days, even though I did eat lots and slept sound full nights, I fell asleep everywhere. No harassing fatigue but rather good baby sleep. I soldiered though and ate my veggies (and the rest). I couldn't believe how strong the effect! It was like I was getting off some kind of hard drug.

The benefits were also instantaneous and outweighed the disadvantages: my energy soared. I started to sleep full nights and feel refreshed like I hadn't felt in a long time. At first I lost weight, (which alarmed me, so I upped my grains and protein). My muscles became stronger, more compact, and more efficient. My face started to loose its puffy appearance. At first it was puffy only in the morning, now even this is starting to go away, and my skin is clearer. I had some recurrent pimples that healed themselves. Mind clarity, memory, peace and calm, happy feeling...

If you restrict what you eat, you will feel weak and therefore will not be able to profit from your physical activity. You will be less inclined to do anything and your mood will also suffer. You face will become gaunt. But if instead you *add* good nourishing foods to your diet, the reverse will happen, and the nourishing food will slowly replace what used to make you store fat.

Good for you Una! I feel I should be doing something too. Last summer I used to bike to work so I got my exercise without realizing. This summer, no such chance. I don't like gyms , and own only the cheapest equipment for cardio - a jumping rope! Anyways, even I weight the same , I feel tired without exercise. So I'll re-try my every day 5 exercises for abs plan. They are as good as any to start. With the 3 minutes on jumping , which I'll hope to bring to 10 , maybe 15:)

I just started a "fitness plan" a week ago. This is it: walk dogs twice a day (or one long one a day). I live on a hilly ranch, so it's good exercise for all of us. What's motivated me is the cooler weather as well as my creeping saddlebags. My butt/hips are getting smaller and the weight seems to be shifting south, just below my butt and into my thighs. I'm not kidding. Phyllis Diller was right about everything staying the same when you're older except 2 inches lower.

What a coincidence. I started getting really back on track yesterday. I did not eat any sweet stuff, just the meals and healthy snacks that I am supposed to eat anyway according to my eating plan. Right now I am waiting for a load of pictures uploading, after that I am going to my new gym (I swiched to this cheaper gym about a month ago and I am very pleased with it: no fancy stuff, only what I need to work out, including friendly staff) for a work out. I will feel so much better after doing that, I always do. So why is it so hard to keep the habit of going twice a week?

Thanks for the kick in the pants. The gym near work is partially under construction and I haven't worked out in nearly a week. I have access to a gym in my apt building, so really, I have no excuse for not getting some kind of workout in.

Coach Mo, I did 3 sets of 5 pushups, but I cheated and only went halfway down to the ground. I'd need to do them on my knees to get the full range of motion. Can I be excused since I did some crunches afterwards and held plank for a minute?

Una, how about a weekly (or more often if it's appropriate) thread where we post our past week's workouts?

I was doing really well with exercising until... I wasn't. So now I'm getting back into it. I walk a lot anyway, but I've found that just spending 10-15 minutes in the morning doing some basic exercises is really helpful. I alternate between core days and upper/lower body days. There's some overlap with the muscles used, but I've found that daily habits are so much easier to keep than my previous every-other day full body exercises.

My plan is to exercise EVERY DAY for all of November. My hope is that it will be long enough to get the habit to stick again, and then I can keep it going while I go on to focus on other goals in the coming months (December is all about washing ALL of the dirty dishes every day!).

Mo, you remind me of back when I did cheerleading/gymnastics: somewhere along the line, our team decided that we did not "have" our skills unless we were able to do them anytime, anywhere. Bunch of kids doing stunts and flips in inadvisable places... ah, youth...

Go for it. My advice is to ease into an exercise routine a little at a time. If you plunge in too intensely you'll get wiped out (or injured) and be less likely to stick with it.

Yay Rae! I thought I was all alone. And for the record, I did them in a cinched waist belt, satin tunic, and snug J Brand black skinnies - you can literally do them anytime anywhere :)

EDIT: Anne you get an A for trying!

I'm in. I have an event in 3 weeks I'd like to drop some weight for ( and have been already, for the last few weeks). I haven't exercised much for the last week, owing to niggling knee worries but want to get back to it. Also plan to renew my gym membership which expired on Fri - just trying to work out the best plan to go for!

And umm, I only made it to 6 pushups of the nonwimpy variety!

I'll join too! I found out at a recent dr's appointment that I've gained maybe about 10 pounds or so over the last year that I'd like to get rid of (although I will NOT be weighing myself, but just going by the fit of my clothes). I already eat quite healthily so I know in my heart that I need to add more exercise!

I got this mini elliptical machine which I've started using ~3X a week and have also picked up the free weights again a couple of times a week.
http://www.amazon.com/Stamina-.....038;sr=8-1

Should probably start doing some sit-ups or crunches again too... I used to do 200 sit ups every night but completely fell out of the habit.

I'LL JOIN! I'm right there with you, looking back on the condition I used to be in and wondering what happened... we're talking 20 lbs, here! I don't expect myself to be the exact same as when I was 19, but I know in my heart that I'm slacking.

Aaaand, since I'm Little Miss Codependent 2011 when it comes to working out, having to report to you may force me to get off my bootie.
