I find long cardigans look sloppy on me. I gave up trying to wear them. I have some shorter ones but don't seem to reach for them as often as I once did. I like the one I got from Tradlands the best.

It sounds like you've identified a style you no longer enjoy wearing. I love cardigans. A couple of years ago, I made the same decision as you about a particular longer length, light-weight cardigan style that I had worn a lot with skinny jeans and pants. I no longer enjoyed wearing them with the straight- and wider-leg pants I had moved toward wearing. So I donated the ones in that style, kept some others that were thicker knits or different lengths, and have since added a lot of shorter, boxier cardis that work better with my wardrobe these days.

I love cardigans but the shorter ones are definitely what is trending right now, possibly because the long ones are harder to style with wide leg pants. I haven't been wearing my super long ones much lately but I still wear my butt-covering ones to work and am keeping an eye out for shorter ones.

Brie, late to chime in but I also struggle with cardigans! I gave up several years ago but do have one comfy one for lounging.

I do notice the length of cardigans seem to go in and out like the tides, so that's another thing to consider if you want to tuck a couple in the holding zone.

You all have been extremely helpful with this. I realized I hadn't worn those longer cardigans in ages and it's pretty clear why now. I've put three of them in the donation pile and left about 3 in my closet for now. I can say why I would keep those 3 - like they're defensible. That said, I'm going to be very careful before I wear them out of the house again!! Learned my lesson to listen to that little voice.

I think sorting out whether there is a specific use for one, or enough, is good. Or, whether is a specific use, but you still don’t like this particular cardigan but think the concept is worth “ upgrading “ —length, fabric, pockets.

I think your observation on proportions is very useful and I can relate. I’m very sensitive to proportions on myself, and come close to chucking things if I’m wearing the wrong pieces together. What is helpful for actually being able to make progress editing my wardrobe is , of course WEARING things, but even doing very intentional try- ons, a top or topper with a full array of bottoms or vice versa. If then nothing works even in try- on, it’s probably time to toss. Also if there’s only ONE outfit, that’s usually not good for me, with some exceptions for special occasions, funerals , depending on storage space and whether I want to try to upgrade with something more versatile.

I look not- good in most cardigans because I need more structure also- not for fomality but just my frame & how they hang. But I like to wear collared button- front shirts and yet don’t actually like how blazers look with them anymore. So a softer V - neck is better. I have 2 Athleta wool cardigans (I don’t think they have offered any more since the year I bought them) and really like how that works, but haven’t found a less-warm style that works the same.

Like Janet, I’m reaching more for hoodies also plus some kinds of HEWI or unicorn jackets that are a bit dressier/ less casual but not full- on blazers.

I keep my sweaters; there are only a few sweater styles and just when I think one will never come back, it does. So over the last few years I’ve been glad to have a couple of old short cardigans to button up, and an old Fair Isle. The long ones will have their day.

I learned years ago that cardigans are not my friend. They lack structure and don’t feel like “me.” I find that something like a cashmere zip-up hoodie functions for me like a cardigan does for others — a layering piece that provides a bit of warmth and potential contrast or visual interest, but it has a more casual vibe and includes the small detail of zipper hardware that feels a bit more “edgy” than buttons on a cardigan. I’ll choose a hoodie or a jacket over a cardigan every single time.

Sometimes when the thrill is gone, it's just OVER, baby!

This style of cardigan isn't so current any more. Having said that, I still like them -- sometimes. I like the drama and the coverage of the length, is what I am trying to say. So I own two. One long grey cashmere that I mostly wear as loungewear with my PJs, quite honestly -- but can, if I want to, pull in to wear with wide leg crops (I like that look).

And another cashmere hoodie, a little shorter than the grey one, that is a gorgeous cranberry colour and works superbly as a topper with slim straights or even wide leg full length pants, and also with slim dresses, which I'm not wearing now but might (who knows?) return to.

Ginger - it was the combination of the kinda bulky sweater and it’s low pockets with the wide leg pants. I thought in my hurry to get out the door that my shorter top would make up for the longer cardigan but it didn’t work like that for me.

Nuancedream - you *are* being helpful! Now that you mention it believe that it is partially the lack of structure that I don’t like, partially the proportions with the wide leg pants I was wearing that were really throwing me off. And how the pockets are so low. I think I used to wear these with skirts which I’m also not reaching for now that work is more casual. I’m interested that you also decided to cull these for the most part.

I have one (mid thigh length) which I have used for over yoga gear or lounging at home. I don't think it really works with trousers other than slim fit styles or leggings. I will likely keep mine but I won't be adding any more longer ones in the short term.

I would be tempted to keep the most useful one for this reason - or taking away camping etc when it can double as a robe if you do that sort of thing.

I wore a long cardigan today because I went from workout to work and wanted the coverage while walking to the gym in my leggings. But once I got to work in my workwear I felt incredibly uncomfortable in it. I’ve never loved this style of cardigan but wore it with skinnies and leggings but I don’t know if I have any use for them now. Will I regret just chucking the lot of them?
