I have a love for pants that sit at the length you are describing. I think that 'technically' it's not necessarily the most flattering length but I love it. Done right it looks modern, cool and a bit edgy. Of course styling of the overall outfit contributes to the success or otherwise of the pant length.

Jenni is dead right about '"the new shorter full length".

Zaeobi, let's see the pants on and determine the best length together.

Ha Zaeobi I need my 1/2 inch as well but it’s 5 feet 1.5 inches not 3.5 here! I adore not having to hem pants and so often try on supposed 7/8 or “ankle grazer” length and hope they may be full length on me- which can work. Or “capri” length turns into a longer crop for me, which also works.
I see I was the last commenter on this thread 3 years ago and I still never found khaki or olive sandals that I liked, to this very day. I still think the length on SW Prof looked good as it was and wonder what she ended up doing!
I think it could be during that 3 years that Angie’s “new shorter full length” came about?- I’m forgetting now!

Reviving a very old thread, I know (sorry!) but I actually have a similar dilemma as a fellow petite (I'm 5ft3.5 & yes, that extra inch is very important! )

@SW prof did you ever end up finding a solution to your 'Perfectly Cropped' length? Taking a photo straight on (instead of from above) might help to be able to gauge the proportions, perhaps?

Adore the sandals in pic one! The highly elusive khaki/olive colour? I think the pants look great just as they are.

Thanks to everyone for their comments! Especially the suggestion to try rolling them before committing to an alteration. I think I may leave them alone, but I have another pair in a different color on order, so we'll see … (don't know if these photos work at all) These aren't the greatest shoes, but realistically are probably what I'd wear.

I do think that shorter is better, but longer can work provided they are long enough and depending on what footwear you will be wearing.

mostly I'd suggest if you are comfortable, post a picture of you in them styled as you think you would wear them most....

Yes, there will always be different opinions about this. And fashion rules will change from year to year. However, personal style is more important than fashion. As Yves Saint Laurent put it: "Fashions fade. Style is eternal."

So try to find out which styles (including elements like lengths, fabrics, colours, and so on) suit YOUR personality, YOUR body and YOUR lifestyle. It is wise to be open to advice and new ideas. But in the end, be true to yourself and dare to wear what YOU like and feel good in!

firstly, i have to say to SW Prof that if you like them, then that is the most important thing anyway! that being said, as someone that is sorta tall (5'10", 36" inseam, ermagherd! lol) i have issues with crop-length too, albeit in a different way, but i still understand the pain it can cause, lol. when i am trying to figure out what length is best i think about choosing skirt lengths or shorts too - look in the mirror and take pics. you will at some point in your fashion journey come to know what your magical lengths are for things. I know that there is this perfect length for above-the-knee skirts on me that makes my legs look flippin' fabulous! going above or below this spot can make them look like weird, ill-shaped logs - but that took years of mirror gazing and pulling skirts up and down. so same thing with pants. i find cropped pants look best when they highlight your ankle and make it look graceful and slender, but for each person that may be just a wee bit different depending on how you're built. I say give it a little roll and see what you like best before committing to hemming. rolling a hem either neatly or slouchy is very "in" right now, so you can choose whatever you want from day to day. Also, tapered makes them way easier to do this. i find trying to fiddle with the cropped flare is a bit risky and can end up looking like you are suffering from 2001 denim syndrome. hopefully that gives some help?
PS - those pants are totally cute!

I don't have any wisdom to share, but wanted to say that I ALWAYS have this problem. I'm both short and short-legged, and it's hard to figure out the ideal length of cropped/ankle/capri etc. pants, whether when buying them or having them tailored. I'm curious what others will say.

I have been very hesitant to wear pants at any length between full-length and just-below-the-knee capris, because the intermediate lengths seem to shorten my already short legs. But I bought these "ankle pants" from Uniqlo and love them. But on me they are just a little longer than on the model shown here. Pretty much at the top of the ankle bone, so not 2-4 inches above as recommended by Angie. Should I have them shortened? To me they don't look bad because they are quite tapered.
