I have rather thin DKNY cotton trouser socks to wear with boots. I bought them at Sam's Club years ago, and they're still going strong.

I have some thicker cotton socks but can only wear them with certain boots that accommodate the thickness.

I wear Cuddl Duds under my pants, so no need for knee socks.

On mild temperatures, if I am wearing jeans, I go foot socks (my are all cotton and black, so not that invisible) and booties/sneakers or no socks and pumps.

If I am wearing skirts, though, I either go thick hose (depending on temperature, 50/80 or 100; but nothing more than 100! Believe me the 200 hoses are deliciously warm, but never stay put!) or thin hose layered under knee highs and tall boots.

On cold weather I'm always on tall boots, and some have insulation (=warm padding).

Which are the bad combos? Well, foot socks and tall boots; the foot socks slide off my feet (no idea how I manage that!) inside the shoe.

I wear lots of socks and like Smartwool most. Cashmere is lovely but wear out quickly. I use thinner wool most, everything from short to knee-highs. I wear greys and black the most, colors not so much. Target has had some wool blend socks in the past that I like and wear well. Sometimes I wear them over tights or even two pair of socks, but more often I change socks during the day. A fresh pair warms my feet better than one pair of thick socks.

I sometimes buy tall boots half a size too large so I can wear thicker socks in them. They add warmth and cushioning. I bought a few thicker pairs in a tweedy looking knit with solid toes a few weeks ago for this purpose. Most of the time I buy packages of plain black socks though and they don't show with pants and booties.

It totally depends on heat I'm wearing. I often wear regular athletic socks with my booties. They don't show.

Most of the time I wear my socks so they're not intended to show--pants come down over boots. In winter and even now in fall I need a real sock and not sheer nude hose (special occasions perhaps excepted). And for work I don't do pant-rolling.
That said, I just love the unfancy blog look link above. I have some marled socks just like that (well, not JC). There is something "right" about that tweedy look. Also I'd go for neutral cashmere-ish socks, similar to some discussed awhile back for cut-out booties.

I love knee high Smartwools under skinnies, jeans, and trousers - just an extra layer of warmth. I always want to wear cute skirts with long socks and boots, but feel a little too hippie/boho in that look.

I have trouser socks I wear with tall boots and ankle boots if my socks won't shoe. Nude if my leg will show.

I found this on the blog Unfancy the other day and am going to give this a try for ankle boots...

What kind and how do you wear them in the winter?

little invisible footie socks with sneakers, oxfords, loafers?

nude knee highs?

socks to fill the gap between the top of booties and pants or jeans? to show just when you are sitting or as part of the outfit?

Knee highs with tall boots?

anything else?

Some looks I am going to try this winter -I am in a no snow climate, but go to mountains a few times a season so have some snow ideas too. It does get cold enough for wearing my high boots, and socks with booties here too.

So will be trying-boot socks with booties to actually show with jeans and skinnies for sporty looks.

Almost always wear thin socks with all kinds of boots that are not high enough to show when I do not tuck in pants, and show bare leg when sitting down and maybe just a wee bit of leg when standing.

Going to try colorful socks with sneakers and low ankle booties as part of the outfit. this will be a new look for me, but maybe fun--or stupid?

Leg warmers on top of tall boots, and my snow boots over my jeans. My wool socks are not tall enough so these will be up to my knees and keep jeans dry.

I also like the look of opaque tights, black only, with skirts and dresses.
