Yeah -- I'll agree with those above who recommend a designated indoor gym shoe and a designated outdoor shoe for everything else, at the very least. For agility and outdoors, I'd suggest having one pair of GoreTex or eVent runners or hikers for days when you need waterproof (any of the big outdoor brands -- Merrell, Ahnu, Teva, Salomon, Keen, etc -- should have lots of options in various weights and heights and styles), and one other pair that is non-waterproof for days when you want breathable (and perhaps more fashionable). That third pair could be just about anything -- canvas, leather, suede, knit, colorful, neutral...

So that's three pairs of sneakers, I know. I don't really know any way around that when you're an active person in a variety of environments. But, on the other hand, by splitting wears, they'll all last longer. I'd be replacing my sneakers every season if I wore one pair for everything.

I agree with Marley about going with one pair of sneakers for the gym only and another more fashionable sneaker for the rest of your life. As a runner, I feel strongly about having the correct shoes for running even if your mileage is relatively low--otherwise you are asking for an injury. I use my running shoes for nothing else and also have another pair of cross-trainers for an aerobic dance class that I take.

I think that I would go with a sneaker that is specifically made for the gym - and the gym only - and then find another sneaker that could be multi-purpose for all of the other activities that you named up above! In my experience most gym shoes are purposely very light - usually a mesh fabric - made expressly for working out in - and so they don't really fit the bill for other things.

So by multi-purpose you mean the gym and wet grass and around town?
I think gym sneakers (for comfort indoors, which is warm) should be mesh, and you are right, mesh sneakers will let in the wet! I have and love the Nike Tanjun (black with white; http://www.zappos.com/p/nike-t...../color/151) for not-wet around-town, and they'd be suitable for treadmill work outs (thick comfy soles). They are classic if plain, and get a surprising number of compliments from the teenage crowd (hint: I'm not a teen). Leather is just so not-breathable to me that I can't imagine it for activities that are sweaty (though I guess I wear booties for walking!)

I like the idea of hiking shoes or boots for agility. I suppose you could also try a rain "booties" which might be more fashionable, but they don't seem as good for the task at hand. Your feet might get clammy running around in rubber boots.

For the gym, I would recommend a non-white trainer with a mesh top. I think colourful trainers are more fashionable.

I am going to have to replace my gym sneakers. I have been wearing Sketchers lightweight running shoes. They are really great, but I am thinking I would like to have something multi purpose. I just run and walk on treadmill at the gym. I run a bit with my dog, but not enough to need marathon quality running shoes. I also have great white ones for indoor pickleball, and a pair of lite grey with lite blue running Sketchers. I have cute slip ons for casual stuff. Anyone have any suggestions of a kind of sneakers that may be called "fashion" sneakers that would work for the gym too? Also I wear my old waterproof Teva hikers for agility when the grass is wet. Otherwise I wear my Adidas mesh running shoes. These are not very good for agility as they soak thru in wet grass in the morning and then in dirt parking lots get muddy. Are their good fashion leather sneakers like in navy or black that can be really multi purpose?Seems all the ones called trainers are cloth and all those colors. These look, to me, like they only should be worn for sport activities. There are soooo many kinds these days. It was less complicated when one just wore trainers for everything. I also used to wear trail running shoes, but these seem to be less plentiful these days.
